Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  3. Adjust steering wheel to lowest and fully extended position for best access
  4. Gather all tools and parts before beginning

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery
Open hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Remove the 10mm nut securing the negative cable and lift cable away from terminal. Secure cable so it cannot contact terminal. Wait 90 seconds for airbag system to discharge.

  3. 3
    Remove upper steering column cover
With lower cover removed, locate the upper cover attachment points. Gently pry the upper cover upward starting from the rear, releasing the retaining clips. Lift the upper cover off the steering column and set aside.
  4. 4
    Disconnect wiper switch electrical connector
Locate the main electrical connector on the back of the combination switch assembly. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight back to disconnect. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.
  5. 5
    Remove combination switch mounting screws
Locate the two Phillips screws securing the combination switch assembly to the steering column (one on each side). Remove both screws completely and retain for reinstallation.
  6. 6
    Remove wiper switch assembly
With mounting screws removed, carefully slide the entire combination switch assembly (including wiper switch and turn signal switch) off the steering column shaft. Guide the wiring harness through as you remove the assembly.
  7. 7
    Install new wiper switch assembly
Position the new combination switch assembly over the steering column shaft, ensuring the alignment tab engages properly with the column slot. Route the wiring harness in the same path as the original. Slide the assembly fully onto the column until it seats against the mounting surface.
  8. 8
    Install mounting screws
Insert both Phillips mounting screws and hand-tighten. Ensure the switch assembly is properly aligned and seated before final tightening. Torque screws evenly to specification.

  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Align the electrical connector with the switch socket and push firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  10. 10
    Reinstall steering column covers
Position the upper steering column cover over the column, aligning the clips with their receptacles. Press down firmly until all clips engage. Install the lower cover, aligning the screw holes, and secure with the two Phillips screws. Torque screws to specification.

  11. 11
    Reconnect battery
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and secure with the 10mm nut. Torque to specification but do not overtighten to avoid damaging the terminal.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all steering column covers are fully seated with no gaps
  2. Verify electrical connector is fully locked with no exposed terminals
  3. Check that steering wheel movement is not impeded by any displaced wiring

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and test all wiper switch functions: intermittent, low speed, high speed, and washer activation
  • Verify all other combination switch functions operate correctly: turn signals, headlights, and high beams
  • Check that wiper switch returns to proper positions and does not stick or bind
  • Ensure no warning lights remain illuminated on the instrument cluster
  • Test wipers in actual operation to confirm proper speed control and parking position
