Cooling System

Pressure tells the truth before the gauge does.

Cooling failures announce themselves quietly — a slow loss here, a gauge flicker there — long before the tow truck. The system is simple: make heat move (pump, stat, radiator), keep pressure (cap, hoses, gaskets), and report honestly (sensors, fans). Most diagnosis is a pressure tester, a thermometer, and patience. And a mushy overflow puddle is ALWAYS a real problem.

What the symptoms mean

Slow coolant loss, no visible leak
Pressure-test it: small external weep, or internal (head gasket) loss
Overheats in traffic, fine on highway
Fan problem — the freeway is doing the fan's job
Overheats on highway, fine in town
Flow/capacity: restricted radiator or a collapsing lower hose
Heater blows cold + temp spikes
LOW COOLANT until proven otherwise — stop driving it
White sweet-smelling exhaust
Coolant entering combustion — compression/combustion gas test now
Temp gauge jumps around
Air pocket from a bad fill, or a dying sensor

The diagnostic order

Work top to bottom — the order is the point. Each step rules out the cheapest, most common causes before anything expensive gets blamed.

  1. Cold check first: level in the RADIATOR (not just the bottle), cap seal condition, hose squeeze.
  2. Pressure test the system AND the cap. Hold 15 minutes — watch every hose end, the water pump weep hole, and the heater core area (sweet smell in the carpet).
  3. Verify the thermostat: upper hose should stay cool then heat rapidly at opening temp. IR gun across the radiator shows cold spots (internal blockage).
  4. Command the fans with the scan tool; verify BOTH speeds. Compare gauge reading with IR-measured temp at the sensor — gauges lie late.
  5. For unexplained loss: combustion gas test (block tester) before the head gasket conversation. Five minutes, definitive direction.
  6. Refill with the vacuum filler on air-pocket-prone engines, and burp per procedure. Half of "comeback overheats" are just bad fills.

The classic mistakes

  • Replacing a thermostat for an overheat that is actually a dead fan or a clogged radiator.
  • Cracking a hot system open. Patience or a burn — every tech only makes that mistake once.
  • Ignoring a "weak" cap — a cap that holds 12 psi instead of 16 lowers the boil point and cooks engines slowly.
Pro tip: The heater core is your free flow gauge: heat that fades at idle and returns with rpm means low flow or low level. It is often the first symptom of a head gasket that has not fully declared itself yet.
