Parts
- Climate control module assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Trim panel retaining clips (if damaged) × 1 — GM 11589292 or equivalent
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake.
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the 12V battery (located in rear cargo area).
- Wait at least 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge.
- Set climate control to OFF and ensure ignition is off.
- Document or photograph current climate control settings for reference.
- Ensure interior temperature is comfortable for working, as climate system will be inoperative during repair.
Procedure
- 1Remove center console trim panelUsing trim panel removal tools, carefully pry the lower center console trim panel surrounding the climate control area. Start at the bottom edges and work upward. Release 6-8 retaining clips around the perimeter. Pull panel forward gently to access the rear tabs, then lift upward to remove completely. Set aside on a protected surface to avoid scratches.
- 2Remove climate control bezelLocate the climate control bezel (decorative surround) directly around the climate control module. Using trim tools, carefully release the 4 retaining clips (2 on each side). Pull the bezel straight out from the dashboard approximately 1 inch, then lift upward to disengage the lower tabs. Remove bezel and set aside.
- 3Remove mounting screwsUsing a T20 Torx driver, remove the four mounting screws securing the climate control module to the dashboard structure. Two screws are located at the top corners and two at the bottom. Keep screws organized for reinstallation.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 4Pull module from dashboardCarefully pull the climate control module straight out from the dashboard opening approximately 3-4 inches. Support the module with one hand while accessing the rear connectors. Do not pull too far as electrical connectors are still attached.
- 5Disconnect electrical connectorsLocate the main electrical connector on the rear of the climate control module. Press the locking tab (typically red or gray) and pull the connector straight back to disconnect. If equipped with a second connector for heated/ventilated seat controls, disconnect it using the same method. Note the orientation and routing of each connector for reinstallation.
- 6Remove climate control moduleWith all electrical connections disconnected, remove the climate control module completely from the dashboard. Inspect the mounting area for any debris or damage. Clean the mounting surface with a clean microfiber cloth if necessary.
- 7Prepare new climate control moduleRemove the new climate control module from packaging. Verify part number matches the original unit. If transferring any components (such as control knobs or trim pieces) from the old module to the new one, do so carefully to avoid damage. Inspect all electrical connector terminals on the new module for any shipping damage or contamination.
- 8Connect electrical connectorsPosition the new climate control module near the dashboard opening. Route electrical connectors to their respective positions on the rear of the module. Connect the main harness connector first, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Connect any secondary connectors (heated/ventilated seat controls if equipped). Gently tug on each connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
- 9Install and secure moduleCarefully guide the climate control module into the dashboard opening, ensuring no wires are pinched or kinked. Align the module mounting holes with the dashboard structure. Hand-start all four T20 Torx mounting screws to ensure proper alignment before final tightening.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 10Reinstall climate control bezelPosition the climate control bezel over the installed module. Align the lower tabs first and press into place, then firmly press around the perimeter to engage all 4 retaining clips. Verify the bezel is flush with surrounding dashboard surfaces.
- 11Reinstall center console trim panelAlign the center console trim panel with the dashboard opening. Engage the lower and side tabs first, then firmly press around all edges to seat the 6-8 retaining clips. Listen for audible clicks indicating proper engagement. Verify the panel is flush and secure.
- 12Reconnect battery and initialize systemReconnect the negative terminal of the 12V battery in the rear cargo area. Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start vehicle). The climate control module should illuminate and perform a self-test. Cycle through all climate control functions to verify operation before completing the procedure.
Reassembly
- Verify all trim panels are securely fastened with no gaps or misalignment.
- Confirm all climate control buttons, knobs, and displays are functioning properly.
- If the vehicle was equipped with automatic climate control, the system may require a brief learning period for optimal performance.
- Check for any diagnostic trouble codes using a scan tool and clear if related to the module replacement procedure.
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON and verify the climate control display illuminates properly.
- Test all climate control modes (heat, AC, defrost, vent) to ensure proper operation.
- Verify blower motor operates at all fan speed settings.
- Test temperature adjustment controls for both driver and passenger sides if equipped with dual-zone climate control.
- Confirm heated seat and ventilated seat controls operate correctly if equipped.
- Listen for unusual noises from the HVAC system during operation.
- Verify air flows from correct vents when each mode is selected (floor, dash, defrost).
- Check that automatic climate control maintains set temperature if so equipped.
- Ensure no warning lights or messages appear on the instrument cluster related to climate control.
- Test recirculation and fresh air modes for proper operation.
