This procedure covers removal and replacement of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbag control module, located under the center console between the front seats.
Warnings
⚠️CRITICAL SAFETY SYSTEM: Errors in this procedure can prevent airbags from deploying in a crash or cause unintended deployment causing serious injury or death. If you lack proper diagnostic tools or training, seek professional service immediately.
⚠️The SRS system stores electrical energy. You MUST disconnect the battery and wait a MINIMUM of 3 minutes before touching any SRS components to allow capacitors to discharge. Failure to wait can cause airbag deployment.
⚠️The replacement module MUST be programmed to your vehicle's VIN using Honda HDS or equivalent professional scan tool. An unprogrammed or incorrectly programmed module will NOT function properly and airbags may not deploy in a crash.
⚠SRS modules are sensitive to static electricity. Avoid touching connector pins. Consider using an anti-static wrist strap grounded to vehicle chassis.
⚠Never use a used or salvage SRS module. Modules from crashed vehicles may be damaged internally and will not protect occupants.
ℹ️The SRS indicator light will remain illuminated until the new module is properly installed and programmed. Multiple error codes may be stored until programming is complete.

Parts
- SRS airbag control module × 1 — Use OEM Honda part number specific to vehicle VIN
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and ensure ignition is OFF with key removed from vehicle
- Verify you have the correct replacement module matching your vehicle VIN - the part number varies by model year and trim level
- Ensure your scan tool has current Honda SRS software and can perform module initialization and programming
- Photograph the center console area and existing module connections for reference during reassembly
- Verify replacement module is new (not salvage) and in sealed packaging
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery and wait for capacitor dischargeOpen the hood and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal first, then disconnect the positive (+) terminal. Secure cables away from battery posts. Set a timer and wait a MINIMUM of 3 minutes to allow SRS system capacitors to fully discharge before proceeding. This waiting period is mandatory and non-negotiable.⚠️Do not skip or shorten the 3-minute waiting period. Premature contact with SRS components can cause airbag deployment resulting in severe injury.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove front center console componentsMove both front seats fully rearward for access. Remove the shift knob (pull upward firmly on automatic transmission models). Using trim tools, carefully pry up the front console trim panel starting from the rear edge near the cupholders. Disconnect any electrical connectors for the 12V power outlet or USB ports. Remove the trim panel completely.
- 3Remove center console mounting boltsLocate and remove the console mounting bolts - there are typically two bolts at the front near the shift area and two at the rear near the cupholders. Use a 10mm socket. Store bolts in a labeled container. Carefully lift the console upward and rearward, feeding the shift boot through the opening on manual transmission models.
- 4Access the SRS control moduleThe SRS module is a silver or black metal box mounted to the floor tunnel between the front seats, typically just behind the shifter area. It will have a large yellow electrical connector. Verify the SRS indicator light is visible on the dashboard (it should be illuminated with battery disconnected, which is normal).
- 5Disconnect SRS module electrical connectorLocate the yellow SRS main connector on the module. These connectors have a locking mechanism - typically a red or yellow slider lock. Slide the lock to the unlock position, then carefully pull the connector straight off the module. Do not twist or bend the connector. Avoid touching the connector pins to prevent static damage.⚠The SRS connector locking mechanism varies by year. Some use a slide lock while others have a lever. Do not force - identify the lock type before pulling.
- 6Remove module ground connectionLocate the ground strap bolt connecting the module to the vehicle chassis. This is typically a single bolt with a ring terminal. Remove this bolt using a 10mm socket and disconnect the ground strap. Inspect the ground contact point for corrosion - clean with a wire brush if needed as poor ground connection can cause SRS faults.ℹ️A clean, secure ground connection is essential for proper SRS operation. Corroded ground points are a common cause of SRS warning lights.Torque specGround Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 7Remove module mounting boltsRemove the module mounting bolts securing it to the floor tunnel bracket. There are typically 2-4 bolts depending on model year. Use a 10mm socket. Carefully lift the old module away from the mounting bracket. Handle the module carefully and place it on a non-conductive surface away from the work area.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 8Inspect mounting area and connectorsInspect the mounting bracket for damage or deformation. Examine the yellow SRS connector on the vehicle harness side for bent pins, corrosion, or damage. Check that the connector seal is intact. If any damage is found, it must be repaired before installing the new module. Verify the ground connection point is clean and free of corrosion.
- 9Install new SRS moduleRemove the new module from its protective packaging only when ready to install. Position the new module on the mounting bracket in the same orientation as the old unit. Install the module mounting bolts and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Ensure the module is seated flush against the bracket.⚠Verify the module part number matches your vehicle before installation. Installing an incorrect module can result in airbag system malfunction.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 10Connect module groundAttach the ground strap ring terminal to the module ground point. Install the ground bolt and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Ensure the ground strap makes clean metal-to-metal contact with both the module and chassis. This connection is critical for proper SRS operation.Torque specGround Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 11Connect SRS electrical connectorCarefully align the yellow SRS connector with the module socket. Push the connector straight onto the module until it clicks and seats fully. Engage the locking mechanism (slide the lock to the locked position or close the locking lever). Gently tug on the connector to verify it is securely locked.
- 12Reconnect batteryReconnect the positive (+) battery terminal first, then the negative (-) terminal. Tighten battery terminal bolts to specification - do not overtighten as this can damage the terminals. Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine). The SRS indicator light should illuminate and may stay on or flash - this is expected with an unprogrammed module.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 13Program and initialize SRS moduleConnect your Honda HDS or compatible professional scan tool to the vehicle OBD-II port. Navigate to the SRS system. Perform the following in order: (1) Clear all stored SRS fault codes, (2) Write the vehicle VIN to the new module, (3) Perform SRS system initialization/configuration, (4) Verify communication with all airbag components and sensors. Follow all on-screen prompts from the scan tool. This step cannot be skipped.⚠️The module MUST be programmed with the correct VIN and initialized. Without proper programming, the airbag system will not function and occupants will not be protected in a crash.
- 14Verify SRS system operationAfter programming is complete, turn ignition OFF then back to ON. The SRS indicator light should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds then turn OFF. If the light stays on or flashes, retrieve fault codes using the scan tool and address any issues. Use the scan tool to verify communication with all SRS components (driver airbag, passenger airbag, side airbags, curtain airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, and all crash sensors).
Reassembly
- Reinstall the center console in reverse order of removal, feeding the shift boot through the opening if equipped with manual transmission
- Install console mounting bolts and tighten securely, but do not overtighten plastic mounting points
- Reconnect all electrical connectors for power outlets and USB ports before securing trim panels
- Reinstall front console trim panel, ensuring all clips are fully seated
- Reinstall shift knob by pressing down firmly until it clicks into place
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position and verify the SRS indicator light illuminates briefly (approximately 6 seconds) then turns OFF completely - this confirms the system is operational
- Use the scan tool to verify zero active SRS fault codes are present
- Confirm the scan tool shows successful communication with all airbag components: driver airbag, passenger airbag, both front side airbags, both side curtain airbags, both seatbelt pretensioners, and all crash sensors
- Verify the module VIN matches the vehicle VIN using the scan tool
- Test that all console functions work properly: cupholders, storage compartments, power outlets, and USB ports
- Perform a final visual inspection to ensure all trim panels are secure and aligned properly
- RECOMMENDED: Have the vehicle inspected by a certified Honda technician to verify proper SRS system operation before returning to service
