Parts
- Negative battery cable assembly × 1 — Use OEM Honda part or equivalent with correct ground strap lengths
Preparation
- Ensure vehicle is parked on level ground with ignition off and key removed
- Allow engine to cool completely if vehicle was recently driven
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Locate battery in engine compartment on driver's side
- Take photo of cable routing for reference during reinstallation
Procedure
- 1Remove negative terminal from batteryUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the bolt securing the negative battery cable clamp to the battery post. The negative terminal is marked with a minus (-) symbol and typically has a black cable. Remove the clamp from the battery post and position cable away from terminal to prevent accidental contact.
- 2Disconnect chassis ground pointLocate the primary ground connection on the chassis near the battery tray. Using a 12mm socket, remove the bolt securing the ground cable ring terminal to the chassis. The ground point is typically located on the inner fender or chassis rail. Note the position of any washers or spacers.
- 3Disconnect engine block ground strapFollow the negative cable to the engine block ground connection point, typically located on the passenger side of the engine block near the transmission bell housing. Using a 12mm socket, remove the bolts securing the ground strap to the engine block. There may be multiple ground straps at this location.
- 4Remove cable from retaining clipsCarefully release the negative battery cable from any plastic retaining clips or cable guides along its routing path. Gently manipulate the cable to avoid damaging nearby components. Take note of clip positions for proper reinstallation.
- 5Clean all connection pointsUsing a wire brush, thoroughly clean the battery post, cable terminals, and all ground connection surfaces on both the chassis and engine block. Remove all corrosion, oxidation, and dirt. For corroded battery posts, use a baking soda and water solution to neutralize acid buildup, then rinse with water and dry completely.
- 6Install new cable to engine block groundPosition the new negative cable ground strap to the engine block ground point. Ensure the ring terminal makes full contact with the clean metal surface. Install the ground strap bolt and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Verify the connection is tight and the cable terminal sits flush against the mounting surface.⚠Ensure bare metal-to-metal contact at ground points - paint or corrosion will cause electrical issuesTorque specGround Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 7Install cable to chassis ground pointRoute the cable to the chassis ground location and position the ring terminal over the mounting point. Reinstall any washers or spacers in their original positions. Install the ground cable bolt and tighten to specification using a torque wrench.Torque specGround Cable Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 8Secure cable in retaining clipsRoute the cable along its original path, ensuring it does not contact hot exhaust components, moving parts, or sharp edges. Secure the cable in all retaining clips and cable guides. Verify there is adequate slack for engine movement and no tension on connections.
- 9Reconnect negative terminal to batteryApply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the battery post if desired. Position the negative cable clamp onto the battery post, ensuring it seats fully. Install the terminal bolt and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can damage the battery post or terminal.⚠Battery terminal bolts must not be overtightened - they are soft lead alloy and will strip easilyTorque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify all ground connections are tight and making proper metal-to-metal contact
- Ensure cable routing does not interfere with engine components or create pinch points
- Confirm cable is secured in all retaining clips with no excessive tension
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (do not start) - verify dashboard lights illuminate properly
- Start engine and verify normal operation with no warning lights related to charging system
- Test electrical accessories including headlights, radio, power windows, and climate control
- Use a multimeter to verify battery voltage with engine running shows 13.5-14.5V indicating proper charging
- Check for any unusual electrical behavior or warning lights on instrument cluster
- If equipped, complete any necessary powertrain relearn procedures by driving the vehicle through normal operating conditions
