Parts

  • Blower motor control module × 1 — Use OEM Honda part number for 2016-2021 Civic 1.5T

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and secure cable away from battery post
  4. Wait minimum 3 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
  5. Open passenger door fully for workspace access

Procedure

  1. 1
Remove glove box contents and damper
Open glove box and remove all contents. Locate the glove box damper arm on the right side. Push the damper off its mounting point by pressing the retention clip and pulling the arm free from the glove box.
  2. 2
    Release glove box retaining tabs
With the glove box fully open, squeeze both sides of the glove box inward to disengage the stopper arms from the dashboard frame. The glove box sides are flexible and will compress inward approximately 1 inch on each side.
  3. 3
    Remove glove box assembly
Once stoppers are disengaged, lower and pull the glove box assembly straight out toward you. Set aside in a safe location to avoid damage.
  4. 4
    Locate blower motor control module
Using a flashlight, locate the blower motor control module mounted on the HVAC housing to the right side of the blower motor assembly. The module is a rectangular component approximately 3x4 inches with a wiring harness connector and cooling fins.
  5. 5
    Disconnect module electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the electrical connector and pull straight away from the module. The connector uses a squeeze-type locking tab that must be compressed before removal. Do not pull on wires.
  6. 6
    Remove module mounting bolts
Remove the two 10mm mounting bolts securing the blower motor control module to the HVAC housing. Note the bolt locations and any ground wire attachments. Keep bolts organized for reinstallation.

  7. 7
    Remove control module
Carefully pull the module straight away from the HVAC housing. The module may have thermal compound on the back surface which can create slight resistance. Do not twist or bend the module during removal.
  8. 8
    Clean mounting surface
Inspect the HVAC housing mounting surface and clean off any old thermal compound or debris using a clean cloth. Ensure the mounting surface is clean and flat for proper thermal transfer of the new module.
  9. 9
    Install new control module
Position the new blower motor control module onto the HVAC housing, aligning the mounting holes. If the new module includes thermal compound, ensure it makes full contact with the housing surface. If no compound is pre-applied, verify OEM specifications for compound requirement.
  10. 10
    Install and torque mounting bolts
Install the two mounting bolts and torque to specification in a cross-pattern. Ensure any ground wires are properly positioned under bolt heads before tightening.

  11. 11
    Reconnect electrical connector
Align and push the electrical connector onto the module until the locking tab clicks into place. Verify the connection is secure by gently pulling on the connector body, not the wires.
  12. 12
    Reinstall glove box
Position the glove box assembly back into the dashboard opening. Compress the sides inward and guide the stopper arms into their receiver slots on the dashboard frame. Release sides to lock in place, then reconnect the damper arm to its mounting point.
  13. 13
    Reconnect battery and clear codes
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification. The HVAC system may require initialization after battery reconnection. Clear any diagnostic trouble codes if a scan tool is available.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Verify glove box damper operates smoothly through full range of motion
  2. Ensure all tools and parts have been removed from behind dashboard
  3. Check that glove box closes and latches properly

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
  • Set blower motor to lowest speed setting and verify operation
  • Gradually increase blower speed through all settings (1-4 or variable) and confirm smooth operation at each level
  • Verify blower motor responds properly to temperature and mode changes
  • Listen for any unusual noises from blower motor area
  • Confirm AUTO mode functions correctly if vehicle is equipped with automatic climate control
  • Check for proper air flow from all vents in different mode selections
  • Verify no warning lights appear on instrument cluster related to HVAC system
