This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the fog light assembly on a 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo, including bulb replacement and housing removal.

Warnings

Allow fog lights to cool for at least 15 minutes before starting work to prevent burns
ℹ️Avoid touching the glass portion of replacement bulbs with bare hands as oil from skin can cause premature bulb failure
ℹ️Take photos of connector orientation and mounting before removal to aid reassembly

Tools required

10mm socket and ratchetEssential
Flat head screwdriverEssential
Phillips head screwdriverEssential
Trim removal tool set
Torque wrench
Work light or flashlightEssential

Parts

  • Fog light bulb (H11 or H8 depending on trim) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Fog light assembly (if replacing entire unit) × 1 — 71106-TBA-A01 (driver) or 71105-TBA-A01 (passenger)
  • Plastic push clips (if damaged during removal) × 4 — 91503-SZ3-003

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn off ignition and remove key from vehicle
  3. Allow fog lights to cool completely if recently used
  4. Turn front wheels fully to the side you are working on for better access to wheel well liner

Procedure

  1. 1
Access fog light assembly from wheel well
Locate the plastic push clips securing the front portion of the wheel well liner to the bumper. Using a flat head screwdriver or trim tool, carefully pry out the center portion of each clip, then remove the entire clip. Remove 3-4 clips to create enough clearance to fold back the liner and access the fog light housing from behind.
  2. 2
    Disconnect fog light electrical connector
Reach behind the fog light assembly and locate the electrical connector attached to the bulb socket. Press the locking tab on the connector and pull straight away from the bulb socket to disconnect. If space is tight, you may need to remove additional wheel well liner clips for better access.
  3. 3
Remove fog light bulb (if bulb replacement only)
Rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn to unlock it from the fog light housing. Pull the socket straight out with the bulb attached. If replacing only the bulb, pull the H11/H8 bulb straight out from the socket. Install the new bulb by inserting straight into the socket without touching the glass. Skip to step 7 if only replacing the bulb.
  4. 4
    Remove fog light mounting fasteners
If replacing the entire fog light assembly, locate the two mounting bolts or screws securing the fog light housing to the bumper. These are typically 10mm bolts accessible from behind. Remove both fasteners completely and set aside.
  5. 5
Remove fog light assembly from bumper
Carefully pull the fog light assembly forward and out of the bumper opening. You may need to angle it slightly to clear the mounting tabs. Take note of any alignment pins or tabs that help position the assembly during reinstallation.
  6. 6
    Install new fog light assembly
Position the new fog light assembly into the bumper opening, ensuring any alignment pins or tabs are properly seated. The assembly should sit flush with the bumper surface. Install both mounting fasteners and tighten securely but do not overtighten plastic mounting points. If fasteners thread into metal brackets, tighten to 10 Nm (8 lb-ft).

  7. 7
    Install bulb and socket assembly
If you removed the bulb, ensure the new bulb is properly seated in the socket. Insert the socket with bulb into the fog light housing, aligning the tabs. Rotate clockwise 1/4 turn until it locks into place. Verify the socket is fully seated and secure.
  8. 8
    Reconnect electrical connector
Align the electrical connector with the bulb socket and push firmly until you hear or feel the locking tab click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is securely locked.
  9. 9
    Test fog light operation
Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine does not need to be running). Turn on the headlights and activate the fog lights using the switch. Verify the newly installed fog light illuminates properly and there are no flickering or error messages on the dashboard.
  10. 10
    Reinstall wheel well liner
Fold the wheel well liner back into its original position. Reinstall all plastic push clips by inserting the clip body into the hole, then pressing the center portion flush until it clicks and locks the clip in place. Ensure the liner is properly seated along all edges and does not interfere with wheel movement.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all wheel well liner clips are fully seated and secure to prevent liner from dragging or rubbing on tire
  2. Verify fog light assembly sits flush with bumper surface with no gaps or misalignment
  3. Return steering wheel to center position after completing work

Verification

  • Test fog lights with vehicle running to confirm proper operation on both sides if only one side was serviced
  • Verify no dashboard warning lights are illuminated related to exterior lighting
  • Check fog light beam pattern is aimed properly and matches the opposite side
  • Inspect wheel well liner for secure attachment with no loose clips or sagging sections
  • Confirm no rattles or loose components when driving over bumps
