This procedure removes and replaces the fuel pump module assembly on the 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo, requiring access through the rear seat area and fuel tank.
Warnings
⚠️FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD: Gasoline is extremely flammable. No smoking, sparks, or open flames in work area. Have Class B fire extinguisher immediately accessible.
⚠️TOXIC FUMES: Work only in well-ventilated area. Gasoline vapors can cause dizziness, unconsciousness, or death in confined spaces.
⚠️FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE: Fuel system operates at high pressure. Failure to properly relieve pressure before disconnecting lines will cause fuel spray and potential injury.
⚠️BATTERY DISCONNECT REQUIRED: Failure to disconnect battery before fuel pump work risks spark ignition of fuel vapors. Disconnect negative terminal and wait 3 minutes before proceeding.
⚠If you are uncomfortable working with pressurized fuel systems or do not have proper ventilation and fire safety equipment, have this service performed by a professional.
⚠Fuel contamination: Keep work area clean. Any debris entering fuel tank can damage new pump or injectors.

Parts
- Fuel pump module assembly × 1 — 17045-TGG-A00 or equivalent
- Fuel pump module seal/gasket × 1 — 17048-SNA-A00 or Use OEM specification
- Fuel line O-rings × 2 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface in well-ventilated area away from ignition sources
- Ensure fuel tank is less than half full to minimize spillage (drain if necessary at a fuel service station)
- Have Class B fire extinguisher within immediate reach
- Place fender covers to protect vehicle finish
- Turn ignition OFF and remove key fob from vehicle
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 3 minutes for system capacitor discharge
- Relieve fuel system pressure: Remove fuel filler cap to release tank pressure
Procedure
- 1Remove rear seat cushionPull up firmly on front edge of rear seat cushion to release the two front retention clips. Lift cushion up and out of vehicle to access fuel pump module cover underneath. Set aside in clean area.
- 2Remove access coverLocate the fuel pump access cover (square plastic cover in floor pan). Remove four Phillips screws securing the access cover. Remove cover to expose fuel pump module. Note: Some models have carpet or insulation that must be folded back first.Torque specAccess Cover Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorDisconnect the fuel pump module electrical connector by pressing the release tab and pulling connector straight up. Verify battery is still disconnected before proceeding.⚠Ensure battery remains disconnected. Double-check before touching any electrical connections.
- 4Disconnect fuel linesPlace shop towels around fuel line connections to catch residual fuel. Using quick-disconnect tool, release the fuel feed line and return line (if equipped) from fuel pump module by pressing release tabs and pulling lines straight off. Cap or plug open lines immediately to prevent contamination. Expect approximately 50-100ml of fuel spillage.⚠️Fuel will spray from connections. Wear fuel-resistant gloves and eye protection. Have absorbent materials ready.
- 5Remove fuel pump lock ringUsing Honda fuel pump lock ring tool (07AAA-SOXA100 or equivalent), rotate the lock ring counterclockwise to unlock. The lock ring has directional arrows stamped on it. Once unlocked, carefully lift lock ring out of tank opening.⚠Do not use a hammer and drift to remove lock ring. This can create sparks and damage the lock ring threads or tank flange.Torque specFuel Pump Lock Ring64 Nm (48 lb-ft)
- 6Remove fuel pump moduleCarefully lift fuel pump module assembly straight up and out of fuel tank. Tilt module slightly to angle fuel level sender arm out of tank opening, but avoid bending sender arm. Module will contain residual fuel in reservoir section. Have shop towels or drain pan ready. Drain residual fuel from module into approved container.⚠Do not bend or damage fuel level sender arm during removal. Bending will cause inaccurate fuel gauge readings.
- 7Inspect and cleanInspect inside fuel tank opening for debris or contamination using flashlight. Remove any debris with clean lint-free cloth if present. Inspect old pump module seal/gasket and remove completely from tank flange. Clean tank flange sealing surface thoroughly with clean shop towel. Verify new module seal is included with replacement pump or acquired separately.
- 8Install new fuel pump module sealInstall new fuel pump module seal onto fuel tank flange. Ensure seal is seated evenly around entire perimeter with no twists or folds. Do not reuse old seal.
- 9Install new fuel pump moduleCarefully lower new fuel pump module into tank opening. Align fuel level sender arm and guide it into tank while lowering module. Ensure module is fully seated onto seal and tank flange before installing lock ring. Verify alignment marks if present.
- 10Install and torque lock ringPlace lock ring onto fuel pump module. Using lock ring tool, rotate clockwise following directional arrows until hand-tight, then torque to specification. Verify module does not rotate during lock ring installation.⚠CRITICAL: Lock ring must be torqued to specification. Under-torquing risks fuel leaks; over-torquing can damage tank threads.Torque specFuel Pump Lock Ring64 Nm (48 lb-ft)
- 11Connect fuel lines with new O-ringsInstall new O-rings on fuel line fittings (both feed and return if equipped). Lubricate O-rings lightly with clean engine oil. Push fuel lines onto module fittings until they click into place. Pull back on each line to verify secure connection. Torque any threaded line fittings to specification if applicable to your model year.⚠️CRITICAL: Always use new O-rings. Reused O-rings will leak and create fire hazard. Verify positive click engagement of quick-connect fittings.Torque specFuel Line Fittings25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 12Connect electrical connectorConnect fuel pump module electrical connector. Press firmly until connector clicks into locked position. Verify locking tab is engaged.
- 13Install access cover and rear seatInstall fuel pump access cover and torque screws to specification in a cross pattern. Reinstall rear seat cushion by aligning clips and pushing down firmly at front edge until both clips engage with audible click.Torque specAccess Cover Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
- 14Reconnect battery and prime fuel systemReconnect negative battery terminal. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine) for 2 seconds, then OFF. Repeat this cycle 4-5 times to prime fuel system and pressurize lines. Listen for fuel pump activation during each cycle.
Reassembly
- Verify all fuel line connections are secure before starting engine
- Ensure access cover screws are torqued to specification to prevent fuel vapor leaks into cabin
- Confirm rear seat cushion is properly secured at both front clips
Verification
- Inspect all fuel line connections and tank access area for fuel leaks with ignition ON (engine not running)
- Start engine and let idle for 2 minutes while inspecting for leaks at pump module and all connections
- Check for proper fuel pressure and smooth engine operation with no stumbling or hesitation
- Verify fuel gauge reads accurately and changes appropriately when ignition is cycled
- Confirm no fuel odor in cabin or trunk area
- Check for diagnostic trouble codes related to fuel system using scan tool
- Test drive vehicle and verify normal acceleration and no fuel system warning lights
