This procedure replaces the ignition switch assembly on a 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo, requiring removal of steering column covers and disconnection of the electrical connector.

Warnings

⚠️Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work to allow the SRS (airbag) system to fully discharge
The ignition switch controls critical vehicle functions including starter motor engagement and accessory power. Improper installation can result in no-start conditions or electrical system damage
Do not force the steering lock mechanism during removal or installation as this can damage the steering column lock cylinder
ℹ️Ensure the ignition key is in the OFF position and removed before disconnecting the ignition switch

Parts

  • Ignition switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Steering column cover clips (if damaged) × 4 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key completely from ignition cylinder
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait minimum 3 minutes for SRS system discharge
  4. Adjust steering wheel to lowest position and fully extended forward for maximum access
  5. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column cover
Locate and remove the Phillips screws securing the lower steering column cover (typically 2-3 screws on underside). Carefully pull the lower cover away from the column, releasing any retaining clips. Set cover aside in a clean area to prevent scratching.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove upper steering column cover
Remove the Phillips screws securing the upper steering column cover (typically 2 screws near the instrument cluster). Gently separate the upper cover from the lower portion, being careful not to break the alignment tabs. Some models may have additional clips near the tilt lever that require gentle prying with a trim tool.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Locate ignition switch assembly
With covers removed, identify the ignition switch assembly mounted on the right side of the steering column. The switch is separate from the key cylinder and connects via a single electrical connector. Note the orientation and position of the switch before removal.
ℹ️The ignition switch is not the same as the lock cylinder - it is the electrical component that the lock cylinder actuates
  4. 4
    Disconnect ignition switch electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the ignition switch electrical connector and carefully pull the connector straight off the switch. If connector is tight, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently release the lock while pulling. Inspect connector terminals for corrosion or damage.
Do not pull on wires - pull only on the connector body to avoid damaging the wiring harness
  5. 5
    Remove ignition switch mounting screws
Remove the two small Phillips screws securing the ignition switch to the steering column bracket. These screws are typically recessed and may require a precision screwdriver or magnetic tip to prevent dropping into the column assembly. Keep screws in a container for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Switch Mounting Screws5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove old ignition switch
Carefully slide the ignition switch assembly away from the lock cylinder actuator rod. Note the position of any alignment pins or guides. The switch should slide straight back without force. If resistance is felt, verify all mounting screws have been removed.
Do not rotate or twist the switch during removal as this may damage the actuator mechanism on the lock cylinder
  7. 7
Inspect mounting area and clean contacts
Examine the steering column mounting bracket for any signs of damage, cracks, or wear. Check the lock cylinder actuator rod for proper movement and alignment. If present, use electrical contact cleaner on the connector terminals to ensure good connection. Verify alignment pins in mounting bracket are intact.
  8. 8
    Install new ignition switch
Position the new ignition switch assembly ensuring proper alignment with the lock cylinder actuator rod and mounting bracket alignment pins. The switch should slide into position smoothly with the actuator engaging correctly. Verify the switch is fully seated against the mounting surface before securing.
ℹ️The actuator rod must engage the switch mechanism correctly - there should be a slight click or positive engagement when properly positioned
  9. 9
    Secure ignition switch mounting screws
Install the two mounting screws and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Start both screws by hand first to ensure proper thread engagement, then torque in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Do not overtighten as the switch housing may crack.
These are small screws threading into a plastic or composite housing - use a proper torque wrench to avoid stripping
    Torque spec
    Switch Mounting Screws5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connector
Align the electrical connector with the ignition switch terminals and push firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully locked. Ensure no wires are pinched between components or the steering column covers.
  11. 11
    Reinstall steering column covers
Position the upper steering column cover, aligning all tabs and clips. Install and torque the cover screws to specification. Then install the lower cover, ensuring all clips engage properly, and install and torque its screws. Verify all clips are engaged and covers fit flush with no gaps.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery and test operation
Reconnect the negative battery cable. Before starting the engine, turn the ignition key to each position (LOCK, ACC, ON) and verify proper function of accessories in each position. Check that the steering lock engages and releases properly. Verify all dashboard warning lights illuminate in the ON position.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all steering column cover screws are torqued to specification and covers are properly seated
  2. Verify no tools or parts were left in the steering column area
  3. Check that all electrical connections are secure and properly routed
  4. Confirm steering wheel adjustment mechanisms operate normally after reassembly

Verification

  • Turn key to ACC position - verify radio and accessories receive power without engine running
  • Turn key to ON position - verify all dashboard warning lights illuminate and fuel pump primes
  • Start engine - verify starter engages properly and engine starts normally
  • Turn key to LOCK position and remove key - verify steering wheel locks when turned
  • Test all ignition positions multiple times to ensure consistent operation
  • Verify no warning lights remain illuminated on dashboard after successful start
  • Check that key can be removed only in the LOCK position
