This procedure replaces the power steering return hose on a 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo, which uses electric power steering and does not contain traditional power steering fluid.
Warnings
ℹ️The 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo uses Electric Power Steering (EPS) which does not use hydraulic fluid. If you see a hydraulic power steering hose on your vehicle, verify the correct engine and model year.
⚠This procedure assumes verification that your vehicle actually has a hydraulic power steering return hose. Most 2016-2021 Civic 1.5L Turbo models use electric power steering only.
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work to avoid burns from hot components.

Parts
- Power steering return hose × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Hose clamps × 2 — OEM spring clamps or equivalent
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Allow engine to cool completely
- Verify your specific vehicle configuration has a hydraulic power steering system (not standard on this model)
- Raise front of vehicle and secure on jack stands if additional clearance is needed
- Place drain pan under work area to catch any residual fluid
Procedure
- 1Access the power steering return hoseOpen the hood and locate the power steering return hose routing. On vehicles equipped with hydraulic power steering, the return hose typically runs from the steering rack to the power steering reservoir. Remove any engine covers or shields that obstruct access using appropriate fasteners.
- 2Remove lower hose clamp at steering rackLocate the lower connection point at the steering rack. Use pliers to compress and slide the spring clamp away from the connection point, or loosen the worm-drive clamp if equipped. Position drain pan directly below the connection to catch any fluid drainage.
- 3Disconnect lower hose connectionTwist and pull the return hose off the steering rack fitting. Expect some power steering fluid to drain from both the hose and rack. Allow fluid to drain completely into the drain pan. Plug the rack fitting with a clean shop towel to prevent contamination.
- 4Remove upper hose clamp at reservoirLocate the upper connection at the power steering fluid reservoir. Use pliers to compress and slide the spring clamp away from the connection point, or loosen the worm-drive clamp. Ensure drain pan is positioned to catch any residual fluid.
- 5Disconnect upper hose and removeTwist and pull the return hose off the reservoir fitting. Note the routing path of the old hose for proper installation of the replacement. Remove any mounting clips or brackets securing the hose along its route. Inspect the reservoir and rack fittings for damage or debris.
- 6Install new return hoseRoute the new power steering return hose following the same path as the original. Ensure the hose is not kinked, twisted, or contacting sharp edges or hot engine components. Connect the upper end to the reservoir fitting, pushing firmly until fully seated.
- 7Secure upper connectionInstall a new hose clamp on the upper connection at the reservoir. Position the clamp approximately 10mm from the end of the hose. If using a spring clamp, ensure it is fully compressed and seated in the proper groove. If using a worm-drive clamp, tighten securely but do not overtighten to avoid damaging the hose.
- 8Connect and secure lower connectionRemove the shop towel from the steering rack fitting. Push the lower end of the new return hose firmly onto the rack fitting until fully seated. Install a new hose clamp positioned approximately 10mm from the end of the hose. Ensure the clamp is properly seated and tightened.
- 9Reinstall mounting clips and coversSecure the return hose using any mounting clips or brackets along its route to prevent vibration and contact with other components. Reinstall any engine covers or shields removed during disassembly. Verify the hose has adequate clearance from moving parts and hot surfaces.
- 10Fill and bleed power steering systemFill the power steering reservoir to the proper level with Honda-approved power steering fluid. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel fully left and right several times to bleed air from the system. Check fluid level and top off as needed. Inspect all connections for leaks while the system is pressurized.
Reassembly
- Ensure all hose clamps are properly tightened and positioned
- Verify hose routing does not interfere with any moving components or heat sources
- If front of vehicle was raised, lower vehicle to ground and remove jack stands
- Remove wheel chocks
Verification
- Start engine and verify no fluid leaks at either hose connection
- Turn steering wheel fully left and right while observing for leaks
- Check power steering fluid level and ensure it is at proper mark on reservoir
- Test drive vehicle and verify normal power steering operation
- Re-check fluid level after test drive and inspect for any seepage at connections
