Parts

  • Shift cable assembly × 1 — Use OEM Honda shift cable assembly
  • Shift cable grommets × 2 — Usually included with cable assembly
  • Cable retaining clips × 2 — Reuse if not damaged

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Chock rear wheels securely
  3. Allow engine and exhaust system to cool completely if recently operated
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge
  5. Remove center console trim panels and shifter boot to access shift lever assembly
  6. Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands
  7. Remove plastic engine under cover to access transmission-side cable connection

Procedure

  1. 1
Remove shift knob and console trim
Unscrew the shift knob counterclockwise by hand. Remove the console side trim panels using a panel removal tool. Carefully pry up the shifter boot trim ring and fold the boot down to expose the shift lever base assembly.
  2. 2
    Disconnect cable from shift lever
Locate the cable end connection at the shift lever assembly. Using a flathead screwdriver, carefully pry the cable retaining clip off. Lift the cable end off the shift lever pin. Note the orientation and routing of the cable through the floor bracket.
  3. 3
    Remove cable bracket at floor
Remove the two cable bracket bolts securing the cable assembly to the floor tunnel using a 10mm socket. Pull the cable grommet through the floor opening and set aside the cable end.

  4. 4
    Access transmission shift lever
From underneath the vehicle, locate the shift cable connection at the transmission shift lever on the driver's side of the transmission case. Clean the area around the cable connection to prevent dirt from entering the transmission.
  5. 5
    Loosen cable adjustment nut
Using a 14mm wrench, loosen the adjustment nut on the cable end fitting at the transmission shift lever. Do not remove completely yet. This will allow the cable end to release from the lever pin.
    Torque spec
    Adjustment Nut10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Disconnect cable from transmission
Remove the cable retaining clip from the transmission shift lever using pliers. Slide the cable end off the lever pin. Remove the cable from the transmission bracket by squeezing the retaining tabs and pulling the cable housing through.
  7. 7
    Remove cable from vehicle
Carefully trace the cable routing from transmission to cabin, releasing all retaining clips and guides along the firewall and frame rail. Note the position of each clip for reinstallation. Pull the cable assembly completely out through the floor opening, feeding it carefully to avoid snagging.
  8. 8
    Install new shift cable
Route the new shift cable from the cabin through the floor grommet and along the frame rail to the transmission, following the exact routing noted during removal. Ensure the cable is not kinked, twisted, or contacting hot exhaust components. Install all retaining clips in their original positions.
  9. 9
    Connect cable to transmission
Push the cable housing into the transmission bracket until the retaining tabs click into place. Slide the cable end onto the transmission shift lever pin and install the retaining clip. Thread the adjustment nut onto the cable end fitting but leave it loose for now.

  10. 10
    Connect cable at shift lever
From inside the vehicle, push the cable grommet fully into the floor opening. Attach the cable bracket to the floor tunnel and install the two bracket bolts, torquing to specification. Snap the cable end onto the shift lever pin and install the retaining clip.

  11. 11
    Adjust shift cable
Move the shifter inside the vehicle to Park position. At the transmission, move the shift lever fully to the Park position (fully forward). While holding the transmission lever in Park, tighten the adjustment nut to specification using a 14mm wrench and torque wrench.

    Verify cable adjustment
With engine off, verify that shifter moves smoothly through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-S-L) without binding or excessive effort. Ensure that the shift position indicator matches the actual shifter position in all gears. In each position, verify the transmission lever at the transmission is also in the correct position.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall the shifter boot and trim ring, ensuring proper seating
  2. Install console side trim panels and press firmly to engage all clips
  3. Thread shift knob onto lever and tighten firmly by hand
  4. Reinstall plastic engine under cover
  5. Lower vehicle from jack stands
  6. Reconnect negative battery terminal

Verification

  • With engine running and foot on brake, verify shifter moves smoothly through all gear positions without excessive force or binding
  • Verify vehicle will only start in Park and Neutral positions
  • Check that transmission engages properly in Drive and Reverse with vehicle moving appropriately
  • Verify shift position indicator matches actual gear selection in all positions
  • Test that vehicle rolls freely in Neutral and is locked in Park on an incline
  • Ensure no unusual noises or vibrations from shift cable during operation
