This procedure relearns the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensors after tire rotation, replacement, or pressure adjustment on the 2016-2021 Honda Civic with 1.5L turbo engine.
Warnings
ℹ️The 2016-2021 Civic uses an indirect TPMS system that monitors tire pressure through wheel speed sensors, not individual tire pressure sensors in each wheel.
⚠Ensure all tires are at the correct pressure before initiating the relearn procedure or the system will store incorrect baseline values.
Tools required
TPMS scan tool or Honda HDS (Honda Diagnostic System)
Tire pressure gaugeEssential
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
- Ensure ignition is OFF
- Verify all four tires are inflated to the pressures specified on the driver door jamb label (typically 32-33 PSI front and rear when cold)
- Ensure vehicle has been stationary for at least 2 hours for accurate cold tire pressure readings
Procedure
- 1Verify tire pressuresUsing a tire pressure gauge, check all four tires and adjust to the exact specifications listed on the driver door jamb sticker. The indirect TPMS system requires accurate baseline pressures to function correctly.
- 2Turn ignition to ON positionInsert key and turn ignition to ON (II) position without starting the engine. For push-button start models, press the START button twice without pressing the brake pedal to reach ON mode. All dashboard lights should illuminate.
- 3Access TPMS menu on instrument clusterOn the left side of the steering wheel, use the steering wheel controls to navigate the instrument cluster menu. Press the MENU button repeatedly until you see the 'Customization Settings' screen, then scroll to find 'TPMS Calibration' or 'Tire Pressure' option.
- 4Initiate TPMS calibrationSelect 'Calibrate' or 'Initialize' from the TPMS menu using the steering wheel controls. The system will display a confirmation message asking if you want to calibrate the tire pressure monitoring system. Confirm the selection by pressing the appropriate button (typically the SEL/RESET button).
- 5Confirm calibration startThe instrument cluster will display 'Calibration Started' or a similar message, and the TPMS indicator light will blink twice to confirm the relearn process has begun. The message will remain on screen for a few seconds before returning to normal display.
- 6Drive vehicle to complete calibrationStart the engine and drive the vehicle at speeds between 30-65 mph for approximately 20-30 minutes. The system needs to collect data from the wheel speed sensors during normal driving conditions. Drive on relatively straight roads with minimal stops for best results.
- 7Verify calibration completionAfter the drive cycle, the TPMS warning light should turn off if calibration was successful. If the light remains on or blinks, repeat the calibration procedure. The system has now stored the baseline rotational speed for each wheel at the current tire pressures.
Reassembly
- No disassembly required for this procedure
Verification
- Confirm the TPMS warning light (low tire pressure indicator) is OFF on the instrument cluster after completing the drive cycle
- Check that no TPMS-related warning messages appear on the multi-information display
- Test the system by slightly deflating one tire by 4-5 PSI, then driving above 30 mph for 5-10 minutes to verify the warning light activates
- Re-inflate the test tire to proper pressure and repeat the calibration procedure to clear the warning
