Replace or service the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensor on a 2016-2021 Honda Civic with 1.5L turbo engine.

Warnings

Never use impact tools on TPMS valve stems as this can damage the sensor internally
Do not exceed 40 PSI when seating tire beads to avoid damaging TPMS sensor
ℹ️TPMS sensors require relearn procedure after replacement using Honda Diagnostic System or compatible TPMS tool
ℹ️The 2016-2021 Civic uses 315 MHz TPMS sensors with specific Honda protocols

Parts

  • TPMS sensor × 1 — Use OEM Honda TPMS sensor or quality aftermarket compatible with Honda relearn procedure
  • TPMS valve core × 1 — Metal valve core included with most TPMS sensors
  • TPMS valve stem nut × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Tire bead lubricant × 1 — Tire mounting soap or approved lubricant

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Verify which wheel has the faulty TPMS sensor using scan tool or dash warning
  3. Check that replacement TPMS sensor is compatible with Honda system (315 MHz)
  4. Loosen wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove wheel
Raise vehicle with floor jack at appropriate jacking point for the corner being serviced. Support with jack stands. Remove lug nuts completely and remove wheel.
  2. 2
    Deflate tire completely
Remove valve cap and use valve core removal tool to extract the valve core. Allow tire to deflate completely. Store valve core in clean location if reusing.
  3. 3
    Break tire bead
Use tire machine or bead breaker to break both tire beads away from the wheel rim. Work around the entire circumference to ensure bead is fully released on both sides.
  4. 4
    Remove tire from wheel
Mount wheel on tire machine or carefully use tire spoons to pry one side of tire over the rim edge. The TPMS sensor is located at the valve stem position, so work carefully to avoid damaging sensor during removal if reusing tire.
  5. 5
    Remove old TPMS sensor
Locate TPMS sensor attached to valve stem inside the wheel. Remove the retaining nut from the valve stem on the outside of the wheel. Push the entire TPMS sensor assembly through the wheel hole from inside to outside. Note the orientation and mounting position for installation.
Handle TPMS sensor carefully - dropping it can damage internal components even if no external damage is visible
  6. 6
    Install new TPMS sensor
Insert new TPMS sensor through the wheel valve hole from outside to inside. Ensure rubber grommet seats properly against wheel. Thread valve stem nut onto stem and tighten hand-tight, then snug with appropriate tool. Do not overtighten as this can crack the sensor housing.
  7. 7
    Remount tire
Apply tire bead lubricant to both beads. Mount tire back onto wheel using tire machine or tire spoons, being careful not to contact or damage TPMS sensor. Ensure tire rotation direction is correct if directional tire.
  8. 8
    Seat tire beads and inflate
Install valve core into new TPMS sensor valve stem. Inflate tire to seat beads, not exceeding 40 PSI during seating process. Once beads are seated, adjust to vehicle specification (typically 33 PSI front, 32 PSI rear for Civic, verify on door jamb sticker).
⚠️Stand to the side during bead seating - never stand over tire as explosive bead seating can cause injury
  9. 9
    Reinstall wheel
Mount wheel back onto hub. Thread all lug nuts by hand to prevent cross-threading. Torque lug nuts in star pattern to specification.
    Torque spec
    Wheel Lug Nuts140 Nm (103 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Program TPMS sensor
Use Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) or compatible TPMS relearn tool to register new sensor ID to vehicle. Follow tool prompts to complete relearn procedure. For Honda Civic, this typically requires entering TPMS learn mode through tool, then triggering each sensor in sequence starting with left front.

Reassembly

  1. Lower vehicle from jack stands and remove stands
  2. Final torque lug nuts in star pattern with vehicle on ground
  3. Install valve stem cap on TPMS valve

Verification

  • Start vehicle and verify TPMS warning light extinguishes after 1-2 minutes of driving
  • Use scan tool or TPMS tool to confirm all four sensors are transmitting and showing correct pressure values
  • Drive vehicle at 25+ MPH for several minutes to ensure system registers all sensors
  • Verify tire pressure matches specification on driver door jamb sticker
  • Check for any air leaks around valve stem with soapy water solution
