This procedure performs a complete transmission fluid exchange on the CVT transmission, removing old fluid and replacing it with fresh Honda DW-1 ATF to maintain transmission health and performance.

Warnings

Transmission fluid can be extremely hot. Allow vehicle to cool for at least 30 minutes after operation before draining.
Use only Honda DW-1 ATF. Other fluids, even those claiming CVT compatibility, can cause transmission damage and void warranty.
ℹ️This procedure uses the drain-and-fill method which replaces approximately 50-60% of total fluid. Multiple drain-and-fill cycles can be performed for more complete exchange.
⚠️Ensure vehicle is securely supported on jack stands before working underneath. Never rely solely on a floor jack.

Parts

  • Transmission drain plug crush washer × 1 — 90471-PX4-000 or equivalent

Fluids

  • Honda DW-1 ATF — 8 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Allow transmission to cool if vehicle was recently driven (minimum 30 minutes)
  4. Raise front of vehicle and secure on jack stands rated for vehicle weight
  5. Remove plastic engine undertray if equipped using trim removal tools
  6. Verify you have correct Honda DW-1 ATF (do not use substitutes)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Locate transmission drain plug
Position drain pan under transmission. The drain plug is located on the bottom of the transmission case, facing rearward. It is a 17mm hex bolt with a crush washer. Ensure drain pan is positioned to catch fluid flow.
  2. 2
    Drain transmission fluid
Using a 17mm socket, slowly loosen the transmission drain plug. Once loose, remove by hand and allow fluid to drain completely into pan. This will take 5-10 minutes for full drainage. Note the color and condition of the drained fluid.
Fluid may still be warm. Wear gloves to protect hands from hot fluid and sharp drain plug edges.
  3. 3
    Measure drained fluid quantity
Pour drained fluid into a measuring container and record the exact amount removed. You will refill with the same quantity. Typical drain-and-fill removes approximately 3.5-4.5 quarts.
  4. 4
Install drain plug with new washer
Remove old crush washer from drain plug and discard. Install new crush washer onto drain plug. Thread drain plug into transmission by hand to avoid cross-threading, then torque to specification using torque wrench.
Always replace crush washer. Reusing old washer can result in leaks.

  5. 5
    Access transmission fill location
Lower vehicle if needed for easier access to engine bay. The transmission dipstick/fill tube is located on the passenger side of the engine bay, near the firewall. Remove the dipstick by pulling straight up with a slight twist.
  6. 6
    Refill transmission with fresh fluid
Using a funnel inserted into the dipstick tube, add the exact same quantity of Honda DW-1 ATF that was drained in step 3. Pour slowly to avoid overflow and allow air to escape from tube. If using a fluid pump, ensure accurate measurement.
Do not overfill. Adding more fluid than was removed can cause transmission damage.
  7. 7
    Check fluid level cold
With engine off and transmission cold, reinsert dipstick fully and remove to check level. Fluid should be between the lower and upper cold marks on dipstick. Add small amounts if needed to reach proper level.
  8. 8
    Reinstall undertray
If engine undertray was removed, reinstall all plastic clips and fasteners. Ensure undertray is secure and properly seated.
  9. 9
Warm up transmission and verify level
Lower vehicle to ground. Start engine and allow to idle. With foot on brake, shift through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-L) pausing 2-3 seconds in each position. Return to Park. Let engine idle until transmission reaches normal operating temperature (approximately 5-10 minutes).
  10. 10
    Final fluid level check
With engine running at idle and transmission at operating temperature, check dipstick level. Fluid should be between the upper hot marks. Add fluid in small increments (1/4 quart at a time) if needed. Do not overfill.
ℹ️Fluid level must be checked with engine running and transmission at operating temperature for accurate reading.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure drain plug is torqued to specification and not leaking
  2. Verify dipstick is fully seated in fill tube
  3. Confirm engine undertray is properly installed if equipped
  4. Remove jack stands and lower vehicle completely

Verification

  • Check for fluid leaks around drain plug after driving vehicle
  • Verify transmission shifts smoothly through all gears with no slipping or hesitation
  • Confirm fluid level is correct at operating temperature with engine running
  • Monitor for unusual noises or vibrations during test drive
  • Consider repeating drain-and-fill process after 500-1000 miles for more complete fluid exchange
