Parts
- Front window regulator assembly with motor × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Door panel retaining clips (if damaged) × 1 — Honda 91561-SZ3-003
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Lower the window fully if motor is still functional (will make access easier)
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes before proceeding
- Gather all replacement parts and verify correct fitment before starting disassembly
Procedure
- 1Remove door panelRemove the Phillips screw from inside the door pull handle. Pry out the triangular mirror trim cover at front upper corner of door panel. Remove two Phillips screws behind power window/lock switch assembly. Carefully pry up and disconnect the switch assembly. Using trim tools, release the door panel retaining clips around perimeter starting at bottom corners. Lift panel up and off door frame, then disconnect any remaining electrical connectors including door latch cable.
- 2Remove inner door weather barrierCarefully peel back the plastic weather barrier sheet. On 2016-2021 Civics this is typically a plastic sheet with adhesive around perimeter. Peel slowly to avoid tearing. If reusing, ensure adhesive remains intact or have new adhesive ready for reinstallation.
- 3Support window glassRaise window glass to approximately 3/4 up position. Use masking tape to secure glass to door frame exterior, running tape from outer door skin up and over to inner door frame. This prevents glass from falling when regulator is disconnected. Alternatively, have an assistant hold glass in position.
- 4Disconnect window motor electrical connectorLocate the window motor electrical connector inside door cavity. Press release tab and disconnect connector. On some models, you may need to remove a small rubber grommet from door frame where wiring harness passes through.
- 5Detach glass from regulatorLocate the two bolts securing window glass to regulator lift plate (accessible through access holes in door frame). These are typically 10mm bolts. Remove both bolts and carefully slide glass upward and out of regulator channel. Glass should now be supported only by tape or assistant.
- 6Remove regulator motor mounting boltsLocate and remove the three mounting bolts securing the window motor/regulator assembly to door frame. These are positioned at motor mount and at two regulator track mounting points. Remove bolts and retain for reinstallation or verify new assembly includes replacement bolts.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 7Extract regulator assemblyCarefully manipulate regulator assembly through large access opening in door frame. You may need to collapse or angle the regulator track to fit through opening. On some Civic models, regulator comes out through bottom of door. Work carefully to avoid damaging door frame paint or wiring harness.
- 8Install new regulator assemblyPosition new window motor and regulator assembly into door cavity. Align mounting bolt holes and regulator track with door frame guides. Ensure motor electrical connector is accessible and wiring is routed away from moving parts. Thread mounting bolts by hand first to verify alignment.
- 9Torque regulator mounting boltsTorque the three regulator assembly mounting bolts to specification. Follow a pattern working from motor mount outward to regulator track mounts. Verify assembly sits flush against door frame and does not bind.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect window glass to regulatorLower window glass back into door cavity and align glass mounting holes with regulator lift plate. Install and hand-tighten the two glass-to-regulator bolts. Verify glass sits squarely in regulator channel before final tightening. Torque bolts evenly.
- 11Test window operation before reassemblyReconnect negative battery terminal. Connect window motor electrical connector. Remove tape securing glass. Test window operation through full range of travel. Verify smooth operation with no binding, unusual noise, or glass misalignment. Adjust glass tilt if necessary before proceeding.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 12Reinstall weather barrier and door panelDisconnect battery again for safety. Press weather barrier back into place ensuring complete seal around perimeter. Reconnect all electrical connectors and door latch cable to door panel. Align panel clips with door frame holes and press firmly to seat all clips. Reinstall all screws, reconnect window switch assembly, and install mirror trim cover.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Torque all fasteners to specification in reverse order of removal
- Ensure weather barrier is properly sealed to prevent water intrusion into door cavity
- Verify all door panel clips are fully seated and panel does not rattle
- Check that door latch cable operates smoothly with no binding
Verification
- Reconnect battery and initialize power window auto-up/down: Hold window switch up until glass fully closes, then continue holding switch for 2 seconds. Release and hold switch down until glass fully opens, then continue holding for 2 seconds
- Test window operation through complete range at least 5 times to verify smooth operation
- Verify window seals properly against weather stripping when fully closed
- Check for unusual motor noise or slow operation indicating potential issues
- Test all other door panel functions including locks, mirror controls, and interior door handle
