This procedure removes and replaces the airbag control module (ACM/ORC), which monitors and deploys all airbag and restraint systems in the vehicle.

Warnings

⚠️SAFETY-CRITICAL SYSTEM: Improper installation or programming of the airbag module can result in airbags failing to deploy during a crash or deploying unexpectedly, causing serious injury or death.
⚠️The airbag system must remain disabled for at least 2 minutes after battery disconnect to allow capacitors to discharge. Failure to wait can cause airbag deployment during service.
⚠️New airbag modules must be programmed and configured to the vehicle using dealer-level diagnostic equipment. Failure to properly program will result in non-functional airbags.
Always place removed airbag module with mounting bracket facing UP. Never place component face-down.
Do not strike or drop the airbag module. Physical shock can damage internal components or cause deployment.
ℹ️If this repair is due to a collision or airbag deployment, a complete airbag system inspection must be performed. Additional components may require replacement.
ℹ️Radio presets and clock will be lost when battery is disconnected. Record settings before starting.

Tools required

Socket set (8mm, 10mm)Essential
Ratchet and extensionsEssential

Trim panel removal tools
Electrical contact cleaner
OBD-II scan tool with airbag system capabilityEssential
Wire brush (for ground contact cleaning)

Parts

  • Airbag Control Module (ACM/ORC) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  3. Record radio presets and settings if desired
  4. Ensure all accessories are turned OFF
  5. Allow at least 30 minutes after last vehicle operation for any residual heat to dissipate

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Open hood and locate battery in engine compartment. Using 10mm socket, loosen and remove negative (-) battery terminal bolt. Carefully move terminal away from battery post and secure so it cannot make contact. Verify terminal is at least 1 inch away from post.
⚠️After disconnecting battery, wait minimum 2 minutes before proceeding to allow airbag system capacitors to fully discharge.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Wait for capacitor discharge
Wait a minimum of 2 minutes with battery disconnected. Do not proceed until full 2 minutes has elapsed. This ensures all stored energy in airbag system capacitors is discharged.
  3. 3
    Remove center console front section
Remove the front section of center console to access area below instrument panel. Remove the two mounting screws at front of console using 8mm socket. Lift front portion of console up and back to disengage clips. Set aside in safe location.
  4. 4
    Locate airbag control module
The airbag control module (ACM/ORC) is located on the transmission tunnel under the center of the instrument panel, forward of the floor console. It is a rectangular metal module with a wiring harness connector and mounting bracket. Identify the module and verify access is clear.
  5. 5
    Disconnect module electrical connector
Locate the yellow airbag system connector on the module. Press the connector lock tab and carefully pull connector straight off module. Do not twist or bend connector. Secure connector away from module to prevent accidental reconnection.
Yellow connectors indicate airbag system components. Handle with care and ensure proper seating during reinstallation.
  6. 6
    Remove ground strap
Locate the ground strap attached to the module mounting bracket. Using 10mm socket, remove the ground strap bolt. Clean both the ground strap terminal and mounting surface with wire brush to ensure bare metal contact. Inspect ground strap for damage or corrosion.
ℹ️Clean contact surfaces thoroughly - poor grounding can cause airbag system malfunctions and warning lights.
    Torque spec
    Ground Strap Bolt16 Nm (12 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Remove module mounting bolts
Using 10mm socket, remove the module mounting bolts securing the airbag control module to the transmission tunnel. There are typically 2-3 bolts depending on bracket configuration. Support module while removing final bolt to prevent dropping.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts39 Nm (29 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Remove airbag control module
Carefully lower and remove the airbag control module from vehicle. Place module on clean work surface with mounting bracket facing UP, never face-down. Inspect mounting bracket and hardware for damage or corrosion.
Always place module bracket-side down (component facing UP). Never set component face-down on any surface.
  9. 9
    Prepare new module for installation
Remove new airbag control module from packaging. Verify part number matches vehicle application. Inspect connector pins and mounting points. If reusing mounting bracket, transfer to new module ensuring proper orientation and secure attachment.
⚠️Verify replacement module is correct for your specific vehicle year and model. Incorrect module may not deploy airbags properly.
  10. 10
    Install new module
Position new airbag control module in mounting location on transmission tunnel. Align mounting holes and start all mounting bolts by hand. Ensure module is properly seated and aligned before tightening. Torque mounting bolts to specification in a cross-pattern.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts39 Nm (29 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect ground strap
Position ground strap to module mounting bracket, ensuring cleaned contact surfaces mate properly. Install ground strap bolt and torque to specification. Verify solid metal-to-metal contact and secure connection.
    Torque spec
    Ground Strap Bolt16 Nm (12 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect module electrical connector
Carefully align yellow airbag system connector with module connector. Push connector straight onto module until lock tab clicks into place. Tug gently on connector to verify it is fully seated and locked. Ensure no damage to connector pins or seals.
  13. 13
    Reinstall center console
Position front section of center console back into place. Ensure all clips are aligned and engage properly. Install and tighten mounting screws. Verify console is secure and properly seated.
  14. 14
    Reconnect battery
Clean battery terminal and post if necessary. Position negative terminal onto battery post and install terminal bolt. Torque terminal bolt to specification. Ensure connection is clean and secure.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  15. 15
    Program and configure module
Connect OBD-II scan tool with airbag system programming capability. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Follow scan tool prompts to program new airbag module with vehicle VIN and configuration data. Clear any diagnostic trouble codes after successful programming. Verify module accepts programming before proceeding.
⚠️Module MUST be properly programmed to function. Unprogrammed or incorrectly programmed modules will not deploy airbags. If you cannot program the module, seek professional service immediately.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated with locking tabs engaged
  2. Verify ground connections are clean and torqued to specification
  3. Confirm no tools or parts were left in work area
  4. Double-check all mounting bolts are torqued properly

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
  • Observe airbag warning light on instrument cluster - it should illuminate for approximately 6-8 seconds during system self-test, then turn OFF
  • If airbag light remains ON, flashes, or does not illuminate at all, DO NOT DRIVE VEHICLE - airbag system malfunction is present
  • Use scan tool to verify no active airbag diagnostic trouble codes are present
  • Verify proper programming of module by checking scan tool for module VIN and configuration match
  • Test drive vehicle briefly and recheck airbag warning light operation
  • If any issues are detected, seek immediate professional service - airbag system must function properly before vehicle is safe to operate
