This procedure replaces the brake light switch, which signals when the brake pedal is pressed to activate brake lights and is critical for vehicle safety and operation.
Warnings
⚠️The brake light switch is a safety-critical component. Brake lights must function properly to prevent rear-end collisions. If you are uncertain about any step, have this repair performed by a professional technician.
⚠Improper installation may prevent the vehicle from starting (brake switch is part of shifter interlock on automatic transmissions) or cause cruise control malfunction.
⚠Do not force the brake pedal during installation as this can damage the new switch or prevent proper adjustment.
Tools required
Flashlight or work lightEssential
Flat-blade screwdriver (small)
Trim panel removal tool
Ratchet with 10mm socket
Torx T-20 driver
Parts
- Brake light switch × 1 — Mopar 68171678AA or equivalent
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Ensure brake lights are malfunctioning or testing confirms switch failure (brake lights stay on, don't illuminate, or shifter won't move out of Park)
- Allow interior to cool if vehicle was recently driven in hot weather
Procedure
- 1Access brake pedal assemblyOpen driver's door fully. Adjust driver's seat to full rearward position for maximum legroom and access to pedal assembly. Use flashlight to locate brake light switch on brake pedal bracket above the brake pedal arm. The switch is a small rectangular component with an electrical connector and a push-rod that contacts the brake pedal.
- 2Remove lower dash panel (if required for access)On some Wrangler models, the lower dash panel may obstruct access. If needed, remove Torx T-20 screws securing the lower knee bolster panel below the steering column. Gently pull panel away and set aside. This step may not be necessary if you have sufficient access to the switch.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector on the brake light switch. Press the locking tab on the connector and pull straight out to disconnect. Do not pull on the wiring harness itself. Note the orientation of the connector for reinstallation.
- 4Remove old brake light switchThe switch is held in place by a twist-lock or push-tab mechanism depending on model year. For twist-lock: rotate switch counterclockwise approximately 30 degrees and pull straight out from bracket. For push-tab style: depress the locking tabs on each side of the switch body while pulling it straight out from the mounting bracket. Note the position of the switch plunger relative to the brake pedal arm.
- 5Prepare new brake light switchRemove new switch from packaging. Most replacement switches come pre-adjusted with a locking pin or shipping clip. Do NOT remove this pin yet. Verify the new switch matches the old switch in connector type and mounting style. If switch has an adjustable plunger, ensure it is fully extended.
- 6Install new brake light switchWith brake pedal in fully released (up) position, align new switch with mounting bracket. The plunger should contact the brake pedal arm pad. Push switch straight into bracket until it clicks or seats fully. For twist-lock type, rotate clockwise 30 degrees to lock. Ensure switch is firmly seated and cannot be pulled out without releasing locking mechanism.
- 7Adjust switch and remove shipping pinIf switch has a shipping pin or locking clip, slowly press brake pedal down approximately 1 inch. This will automatically adjust the switch to proper position. Release pedal and remove the shipping pin by pulling it straight out. You should hear a click as the switch self-adjusts. For non-self-adjusting switches, ensure plunger has approximately 1-2mm of free play before pedal movement activates the switch.
- 8Reconnect electrical connectorPush electrical connector onto switch terminals until it clicks firmly into place. Tug gently on connector to verify it is locked. Ensure wiring is not pinched or under tension.
- 9Reinstall dash panelsIf lower dash panel was removed, reinstall by aligning clips and pressing firmly into place. Install Torx T-20 screws and tighten securely but do not overtighten plastic mounting points.
Reassembly
- Return driver's seat to normal operating position
- Ensure all trim panels are properly secured and aligned
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Verify instrument cluster illuminates normally
- Press brake pedal and confirm brake lights illuminate (have assistant observe or check reflection in garage door/window)
- Release brake pedal and confirm brake lights turn off completely
- For automatic transmission: verify shifter can be moved out of PARK only when brake pedal is pressed
- Start engine and verify cruise control can be set and cancels when brake pedal is pressed
- Test drive vehicle in safe area and confirm brake lights function during normal braking
- Check that no warning lights appear on instrument cluster related to brake system or transmission
