Parts

  • Replacement radio/head unit × 1 — Aftermarket or OEM Uconnect unit compatible with 2012-2018 JK
  • Radio wiring harness adapter (if installing aftermarket) × 1 — Metra 70-6502 or equivalent
  • Radio dash kit (if installing aftermarket) × 1 — Metra 95-6518B or equivalent
  • Antenna adapter (if installing aftermarket) × 1 — Metra 40-EU10 or equivalent

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  3. Gather all tools and new radio unit
  4. If installing aftermarket radio, verify all adapters and mounting hardware are included
  5. Review wiring diagrams for aftermarket installation if applicable

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Open hood and locate battery in engine bay. Using 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt and remove the negative cable from the battery post. Secure cable away from battery to prevent accidental reconnection. Wait 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove center bezel upper trim
Using trim panel removal tools, carefully pry the upper center bezel panel starting from the top corners near the windshield. Work around the perimeter to release the retaining clips. The panel surrounds the upper air vents and radio area. Pull panel forward and set aside.
  3. 3
    Remove climate control panel
Locate and remove the four T15 Torx screws securing the HVAC/climate control panel (two on each side). Gently pull the panel forward approximately 2 inches. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the rear of the climate control module by pressing the release tabs. Remove panel and set aside safely.
  4. 4
    Remove radio mounting screws
Locate the four T15 Torx screws securing the radio unit to the dash frame (two on each side of the radio). Remove all four screws completely and retain them for reinstallation. On some models, there may be bracket screws that also need removal.
    Torque spec
    Bracket Bolts23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Pull radio unit forward
Carefully pull the radio unit straight forward out of the dash opening approximately 4-6 inches. Support the unit with one hand while accessing the rear connections. Use a flashlight to illuminate the rear of the radio if needed.
  6. 6
    Disconnect antenna and wiring harnesses
Locate the antenna coaxial cable connection on the rear right of the radio and unscrew it counterclockwise (hand tight only). Press the release tab on the large white radio wiring harness connector and pull straight back to disconnect. If equipped, disconnect any additional connectors such as USB, auxiliary input, or satellite radio connections. Remove the radio unit completely from vehicle.
Do not pull on wires themselves; always grasp the connector body to avoid damaging pins or terminals
  7. 7
    Prepare new radio unit
If installing an aftermarket radio, attach the wiring harness adapter to the new radio per manufacturer instructions. Connect the antenna adapter if required. If installing OEM replacement, transfer any mounting brackets from old unit to new unit if necessary. Verify all connections are secure before proceeding.
  8. 8
Connect wiring and antenna to new radio
Position the new radio near the dash opening. Connect the main wiring harness by aligning the connector and pressing firmly until it clicks into place. Connect the antenna cable by threading it clockwise until hand tight (do not overtighten). Connect any additional cables such as USB, auxiliary, or satellite radio if equipped.
  9. 9
Test radio operation before final installation
Temporarily reconnect the battery negative terminal. Turn ignition to ACC or ON position and verify radio powers on, all speakers function, display is operational, and antenna reception is adequate. Test all sources (AM/FM, USB, Bluetooth if equipped). If any issues are found, address before final installation.
ℹ️Testing before final assembly saves time if connections need to be corrected
  10. 10
    Secure radio unit in dash
Once operation is verified, disconnect battery negative terminal again. Carefully slide the radio unit back into the dash opening, ensuring no wires are pinched behind the unit. Align mounting holes and install the four T15 Torx screws. Tighten screws evenly in a cross pattern to secure radio firmly without over-tightening plastic components.
  11. 11
    Reinstall climate control panel
Reconnect the electrical connectors to the rear of the climate control module, ensuring they click into place. Position the panel into the dash opening and install the four T15 Torx screws. Verify panel sits flush with surrounding trim.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reinstall center bezel trim
Align the upper center bezel panel with the dash opening. Starting at one corner, press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Verify panel is fully seated and aligned properly with no gaps.
  13. 13
    Reconnect battery and verify operation
Reconnect the battery negative terminal and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Turn ignition to ACC or ON position. Verify radio operates correctly, all features function as expected, climate controls operate normally, and no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all trim panels are fully seated with no gaps or misalignment
  2. Verify all T15 Torx screws are present and tightened for radio and climate control panel
  3. Check that battery terminal is torqued to specification to prevent starting issues
  4. If radio requires security code or setup, complete initialization procedure per manufacturer instructions

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON and verify radio powers up and displays normally
  • Test all audio sources (AM, FM, USB, Bluetooth, auxiliary) for proper operation
  • Verify all speakers produce sound and balance/fade controls work correctly
  • Test climate control functions to ensure proper operation after reinstallation
  • Check for any rattles or loose trim panels while driving over rough surfaces
  • Verify steering wheel audio controls function properly if equipped
