Parts
- Front ABS wheel speed sensor × 1 — Use OEM specification (Kia part# 95670-A7000 or equivalent)
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground
- Raise front of vehicle with floor jack at designated jacking points
- Support vehicle securely on jack stands rated for vehicle weight
- Remove front wheel on side requiring sensor replacement
Procedure
- 1Locate the ABS wheel speed sensorThe front ABS sensor is mounted on the steering knuckle behind the brake rotor. Locate the sensor body with its electrical connector and the single mounting bolt on the rear of the knuckle. The sensor tip extends into the knuckle bore near the hub bearing.
- 2Disconnect the sensor electrical connectorTrace the sensor wire harness from the sensor body to the electrical connector, typically located near the strut or inner fender well. Press the release tab and carefully disconnect the connector. Note the routing of the wire harness and any retaining clips for reassembly.
- 3Remove wire harness retaining clipsIdentify any plastic clips or brackets securing the ABS sensor wire to the knuckle, strut, or chassis. Carefully release these clips using a flathead screwdriver or trim tool if necessary. The harness must be free to remove with the sensor.
- 4Remove the ABS sensor mounting boltUsing a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing the ABS sensor to the steering knuckle. The bolt is accessible from the rear of the knuckle. If the bolt is corroded or difficult to remove, apply penetrating oil and allow it to soak before attempting removal.⚠Bolt may be corroded; avoid stripping by ensuring proper socket engagementTorque specABS Sensor Bolt10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 5Extract the ABS sensor from the knuckleCarefully pull the ABS sensor straight out of its bore in the steering knuckle. The sensor may be tight due to corrosion or debris. If stuck, gently twist while pulling. Do not pry against the knuckle bore to avoid damage. Once removed, inspect the sensor tip for metal debris, cracks, or damage.
- 6Clean the sensor mounting boreUse a wire brush and brake parts cleaner to thoroughly clean the sensor bore in the knuckle. Remove all dirt, corrosion, and metal debris. Inspect the tone ring on the hub bearing for damage, missing teeth, or excessive debris buildup. Clean the tone ring surface if necessary.ℹ️Ensure no metal debris remains in bore as it can cause false ABS signals or sensor damage
- 7Prepare and install the new ABS sensorApply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the O-ring on the new sensor body (if equipped) and the sensor tip to prevent corrosion. Insert the new sensor straight into the knuckle bore, ensuring it seats fully. The sensor should slide in smoothly without excessive force. Align the mounting hole.
- 8Install and torque the sensor mounting boltThread the sensor mounting bolt by hand to avoid cross-threading. Using a torque wrench with 10mm socket, tighten the bolt to exactly 10.0 Nm (7.0 lb-ft). Do not exceed this specification as the bolt threads into aluminum and can strip easily if overtightened.⚠Critical torque specification - overtightening will strip aluminum threads in knuckleTorque specABS Sensor Bolt10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 9Route and secure the sensor wire harnessRoute the sensor wire harness along the original path, ensuring it does not contact moving components, sharp edges, or the tire. Reinstall all retaining clips and brackets to secure the harness properly. Ensure adequate slack to allow for suspension travel and steering movement.
- 10Reconnect the electrical connectorReconnect the ABS sensor electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Verify the connector lock tab is fully engaged. Gently tug on the connection to confirm it is secure.
- 11Reinstall the wheelPosition the wheel onto the hub and hand-thread all lug nuts. Lower the vehicle until the tire just contacts the ground to prevent wheel rotation. Using a torque wrench with 21mm socket, tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to 129.0 Nm (95.0 lb-ft). Fully lower the vehicle and remove jack stands.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts129 Nm (95 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all wire harness clips are properly secured and harness routing matches original configuration
- Verify sensor mounting bolt is torqued to specification and sensor is fully seated in bore
- Double-check wheel lug nuts are torqued properly after lowering vehicle
Verification
- Start the engine and verify the ABS warning light illuminates briefly during bulb check, then extinguishes after a few seconds
- If ABS light remains on, use a scan tool to check for codes and verify sensor signal is present
- Test drive vehicle at speeds above 10 mph to allow ABS system to initialize and verify proper sensor operation
- Confirm ABS light does not illuminate during or after test drive
- If available, use a scan tool to monitor live wheel speed sensor data and verify all four sensors show similar readings while driving
