Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake firmly
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels if raising front first, or front wheels if raising rear first
  3. Loosen all wheel lug nuts 1/4 turn while wheels are still on ground
  4. Raise vehicle at all four corners using floor jack and support securely on four jack stands at designated lift points
  5. Remove all four wheels completely and set aside
  6. Locate brake fluid reservoir under hood on driver side firewall
  7. Clean area around reservoir cap thoroughly to prevent contamination
  8. Remove reservoir cap and check fluid level - top off to MAX line with fresh DOT 4 brake fluid if needed
  9. Inspect fluid for dark color or contamination - if fluid is very dark or dirty, consider a complete fluid flush instead

    Locate the bleeder screw on the back side of the right rear brake caliper (passenger side rear). Clean the bleeder screw thoroughly with brake cleaner or wire brush. Place the bleeder wrench with attached hose over the bleeder screw. Have assistant sit in driver seat. Instruct assistant to pump brake pedal 5-6 times and hold firm pressure on the pedal. While pedal is held down, open bleeder screw 1/4 to 1/2 turn counterclockwise. Fluid and air will flow through hose into catch bottle. When fluid flow stops, close bleeder screw firmly BEFORE assistant releases pedal. Instruct assistant to release pedal. Repeat this pump-hold-bleed-close-release sequence 4-6 times until no air bubbles appear in the hose and only clean fluid flows. Check reservoir level and top off to MAX line between every 2-3 bleed cycles.
    Bleeder screw must be closed BEFORE pedal is released or air will be drawn back into the caliper. The sequence is critical: close screw first, then release pedal.
    Do not overtighten bleeder screw when closing - they are brass and strip easily. Tighten to 10 Nm (7 lb-ft) when final bleeding is complete.

    Move to the left rear brake caliper (driver side rear). Clean the bleeder screw thoroughly. Repeat the exact same bleeding procedure as the right rear: assistant pumps pedal 5-6 times and holds, open bleeder screw 1/4 to 1/2 turn, allow fluid to flow until stopped, close bleeder screw, then assistant releases pedal. Continue until no air bubbles are visible and fluid runs clear. Check and top off reservoir to MAX line as needed. The bleeding sequence for this vehicle is: right rear, left rear, right front, left front (furthest from master cylinder to closest).

    Move to the right front brake caliper (passenger side front). Clean the bleeder screw thoroughly - it is located on the rear upper portion of the caliper. Attach bleeder wrench and hose. Repeat the bleeding procedure: pump and hold pedal, open bleeder screw, allow fluid flow, close bleeder screw, release pedal. Continue until no air bubbles appear. Front calipers may require more bleed cycles than rear due to larger caliper volume. Check reservoir level frequently and maintain above MIN line at all times.

This caliper should bleed relatively quickly if previous three corners were done correctly. Top off reservoir to MAX line when complete.

    Go back to each of the four bleeder screws in sequence (RR, LR, RF, LF) and verify each is properly tightened to 10 Nm (7 lb-ft). Do not overtighten as the brass screws will strip. Wipe away any spilled brake fluid from calipers, wheels hubs, and suspension components with clean water and dry thoroughly. Inspect each bleeder screw area for any signs of leakage.
    Bleeder screws are critical leak points. Ensure each is properly seated and torqued but not overtightened.

    Top off reservoir and test brake pedal
    Fill brake fluid reservoir to MAX line with fresh DOT 4 brake fluid. Install reservoir cap securely. With engine OFF, pump brake pedal repeatedly 15-20 times. Pedal should feel firm and consistent with normal travel. If pedal feels spongy, soft, or sinks slowly to floor, air remains in the system and bleeding procedure must be repeated. If pedal goes to floor, DO NOT drive vehicle and seek professional service.

Once vehicle weight is on all four wheels, torque lug nuts to 140 Nm (103 lb-ft) in a star pattern: tighten one lug, then move to the opposite lug, continuing in a star pattern until all are torqued.

Reassembly

  1. Verify brake fluid reservoir is at MAX line and cap is installed securely

Verification
