Remove and replace the engine cooling fan assembly, including the fan motor and shroud, to restore proper cooling system operation.

Warnings

⚠️Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work. Hot coolant and components can cause severe burns.
Disconnect battery negative terminal before working near electrical components to prevent shorts or fan activation.
ℹ️The cooling fan assembly is located directly behind the radiator and shares mounting points with the condenser fan on A/C equipped models.

Parts

  • Cooling fan assembly (motor and shroud) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Fan mounting hardware kit (if not included) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
  2. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for system discharge
  4. Remove engine cover by pulling upward on front clips and lifting away
  5. Take photos of fan electrical connector routing for reference during reassembly

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect electrical connector
Locate the cooling fan motor electrical connector on the driver's side of the fan shroud. Press the release tab and pull the connector straight off the fan motor. Move the wiring harness aside to prevent damage during fan removal.
  2. 2
    Remove upper radiator hose bracket
Using a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing the upper radiator hose bracket to the fan shroud. This bracket may be integrated with the fan mounting on the driver's side. Gently move the hose aside for clearance.
  3. 3
Remove upper fan shroud mounting bolts
Using a 10mm socket, remove the two upper mounting bolts securing the fan shroud to the radiator support. These bolts are located at the top corners of the fan shroud. Keep these bolts organized as they may differ from lower mounting hardware.

  4. 4
Remove lower fan shroud mounting bolts
Working from above, use a 10mm socket with extension to access and remove the two lower mounting bolts at the bottom of the fan shroud. These bolts secure the shroud to the lower radiator support tabs. The passenger side bolt may require a longer extension due to limited access.

    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  5. 5
Disconnect condenser fan connector (if equipped)
On vehicles with air conditioning, locate the condenser fan electrical connector on the passenger side. Press the release tab and disconnect. If your vehicle has a dual fan assembly, both fans may be on a single shroud and remove together.
  6. 6
    Remove cooling fan assembly
Carefully lift the cooling fan assembly straight up and out of the engine bay. Tilt the top of the assembly slightly toward the engine to clear the radiator, then lift completely free. Be careful not to damage radiator fins or scratch the condenser. The assembly will be bulky but manageable.
The fan shroud tabs at the bottom may catch on the lower radiator support. Ensure all mounting bolts are removed before applying force.
  7. 7
    Install new cooling fan assembly
Position the new cooling fan assembly above the radiator. Tilt the top toward the engine and carefully lower the assembly into place, aligning the bottom tabs with the lower radiator support slots. Ensure the fan shroud seats fully against the radiator mounting points and all four mounting holes align properly.
  8. 8
    Install mounting bolts
Install the two lower mounting bolts first, threading them in by hand to ensure proper alignment. Then install the two upper mounting bolts. Tighten all four bolts to specification in a cross pattern (upper driver side, lower passenger side, upper passenger side, lower driver side) using a torque wrench.

  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Reconnect the cooling fan motor electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place. If equipped with A/C, reconnect the condenser fan connector. Verify both connectors are fully seated and locking tabs are engaged. Route wiring harnesses as shown in reference photos to prevent contact with moving components.
  10. 10
    Reinstall upper radiator hose bracket
Position the upper radiator hose bracket back onto the fan shroud mounting point and secure with the 10mm bolt. Tighten securely but do not overtighten as the shroud is plastic.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine cover by aligning rear tabs first, then pressing front clips until they snap into place
  2. Reconnect negative battery terminal and tighten securely
  3. Verify all tools and parts have been removed from engine bay

Verification

  • Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature (approximately 195°F)
  • Verify the cooling fan activates automatically when temperature threshold is reached
  • Listen for abnormal noises from the fan assembly during operation
  • Check that fan motor electrical connector remains secure with engine vibration
  • Verify A/C condenser fan operation by turning on air conditioning (if equipped)
  • Inspect for any coolant leaks around radiator connections that may have been disturbed
