This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the cooling fan motor assembly on a 2015 Kia Forte with 1.8L I4 engine, including disconnecting electrical components and removing the fan shroud.

Warnings

⚠️Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work. Hot coolant and components can cause severe burns.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes before working near the fan to prevent unexpected fan operation.
ℹ️On some models, partial coolant drainage may be required if upper radiator hose interferes with fan shroud removal.

Parts

  • Cooling fan motor assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Fan shroud mounting clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
  2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes
  3. Remove engine cover if equipped by pulling upward on clip fasteners
  4. Remove upper air intake duct if it restricts access to fan shroud
  5. Take photo of electrical connector routing for reference during reassembly

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect cooling fan electrical connector
Locate the cooling fan electrical connector on the left side of the fan shroud. Press the release tab and carefully pull the connector apart. If connector is stubborn, gently wiggle while pulling - do not force.
  2. 2
    Disconnect auxiliary electrical connectors
If equipped with dual fans or fan control module, disconnect any additional electrical connectors attached to the fan assembly. Note the routing of wiring harnesses for reinstallation.
  3. 3
Remove upper fan shroud mounting bolts
Locate the two upper mounting bolts securing the fan shroud to the radiator support. Use a 10mm socket to remove these bolts completely. Keep bolts organized for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Remove lower fan shroud fasteners
Access the lower fan shroud mounting points. On the 2015 Forte, these typically consist of two lower mounting bolts or tabs that insert into the radiator. Remove 10mm bolts if present, or gently release tabs by lifting shroud slightly.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  5. 5
Remove fan shroud assembly from vehicle
Carefully lift the fan shroud assembly straight up and out of the engine bay. The assembly may be tight against the radiator - tilt slightly forward (toward engine) if needed to clear radiator tabs. Avoid contact with radiator fins to prevent damage.
Do not bend or damage radiator fins during removal. Handle assembly carefully as fan blades can be sharp.
  6. 6
    Remove fan motor from shroud
Place the fan shroud assembly on a clean work surface with fan motor facing up. Locate the three fan motor mounting bolts securing the motor to the shroud. Use an 8mm socket to remove these bolts, supporting the motor as you remove the final bolt.
    Torque spec
    Fan Motor Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Separate fan motor from shroud
Lift the cooling fan motor assembly away from the shroud. Inspect the mounting rubber grommets and replace if cracked or deteriorated. Check the fan blade for cracks or damage and replace if necessary.
  8. 8
Install new fan motor to shroud
Position the new cooling fan motor into the shroud, aligning the mounting holes. Ensure any rubber isolation grommets are properly seated. Install the three fan motor bolts and torque in a star pattern to ensure even seating.
    Torque spec
    Fan Motor Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Install fan shroud assembly
Carefully lower the fan shroud assembly into the engine bay. Align the lower mounting tabs or bolt holes with the radiator first, then position the upper mounting points. Ensure no wiring is pinched between shroud and radiator.
  10. 10
    Install shroud mounting bolts
Install the upper and lower fan shroud mounting bolts. Start all bolts by hand first to ensure proper alignment, then torque to specification. Verify shroud is secure and does not have excessive movement.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Reconnect all cooling fan electrical connectors, ensuring they click fully into place. Route wiring harness as noted in preparation photos to avoid contact with moving components or hot surfaces. Verify connector lock tabs are fully engaged.
  12. 12
    Reinstall removed components
Reinstall the upper air intake duct and engine cover if they were removed. Ensure all clips and fasteners are properly secured. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated with locking tabs engaged
  2. Ensure no tools or parts are left in engine bay
  3. Check that fan blades have adequate clearance from radiator and shroud in all positions

Verification

  • Start the engine and allow it to idle. Monitor for unusual noises from fan area
  • Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify cooling fan activates automatically
  • Turn on air conditioning - fan should activate immediately or within a few seconds
  • Listen for smooth, quiet fan operation without grinding, clicking, or vibration
  • Verify no coolant leaks are present after test run
  • Check that fan stops when engine is turned off and key is removed
