This procedure covers removal and replacement of the front engine mount on a 2015 Kia Forte with 1.8L I4 engine, requiring engine support and proper torque specifications to ensure safe operation.

Warnings

⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands and ensure the engine is properly supported before removing engine mounts.
Improper torque on engine mount bolts can cause severe vibration, damage to drivetrain components, or mount failure.
Engine must be fully supported before removing mount bolts. Failure to support engine can cause damage to other mounts, hoses, wiring, or transmission components.

Tools required

Engine support bar or jack with block of woodEssential
Torque wrench (10-100 Nm range)Essential
Socket set (10mm-19mm)
Ratchet and extensions
Floor jackEssential
Jack standsEssential
Wheel chocks
Pry bar
Penetrating oil

Parts

  • Front engine mount assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Chock rear wheels
  3. Allow engine to cool completely if recently driven
  4. Disconnect negative battery cable
  5. Raise front of vehicle and secure on jack stands
  6. Remove front engine splash shield if equipped for better access

Procedure

  1. 1
    Support the engine
Install an engine support bar across the top of the engine bay, or position a floor jack with a block of wood under the oil pan to support engine weight. Raise the jack or support bar until it just contacts the engine with slight upward pressure, but do not lift the engine yet. Ensure support is stable and centered to prevent engine from tilting during mount removal.
⚠️Engine must remain supported throughout entire procedure. Never remove all mount bolts without proper engine support in place.
  2. 2
Remove front mount upper bracket cover
Locate the front engine mount upper cover or bracket cover if equipped. Remove the cover bolts and set cover aside. This exposes the upper mounting hardware.
  3. 3
    Remove mount-to-engine block bolts
Identify the bolts securing the front engine mount to the engine block. These are typically 2-3 bolts accessible from above or through the wheel well. Apply penetrating oil if bolts are corroded. Remove these bolts completely and retain hardware.
    Torque spec
    Engine Mount-to-Block Bolts65 Nm (48 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Remove mount through-bolt
Locate the large through-bolt that passes horizontally through the mount assembly. This bolt connects the engine mount bracket to the mount itself. Support the mount with one hand while removing the through-bolt nut, then extract the through-bolt completely.
Mount may shift when through-bolt is removed. Keep hands clear of pinch points between mount and frame.
  5. 5
    Remove mount-to-frame bolts
Access the bolts securing the mount bracket to the subframe or front crossmember. These bolts thread into the frame from below. Remove all mount-to-frame bolts while supporting the mount assembly.
    Torque spec
    Engine Mount-to-Frame Bolts75 Nm (55 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove front engine mount assembly
With all fasteners removed, carefully lower and extract the front engine mount assembly from the vehicle. You may need to slightly raise or lower the engine using your support to create clearance. Note the orientation and positioning of the mount for installation of the new unit.
  7. 7
    Inspect mounting locations
Clean all mounting surfaces on the engine block and subframe. Inspect the engine block mounting area and frame mounting points for damage, cracks, or elongated bolt holes. Check that all threaded holes are clean and in good condition. Replace any damaged hardware.
  8. 8
    Position new engine mount
Position the new front engine mount assembly into place, aligning it with the mounting points on both the engine block and subframe. Ensure the mount is oriented correctly with the same alignment as the original. You may need to adjust engine height slightly with your support jack or bar to align bolt holes.
  9. 9
    Install mount-to-frame bolts
Start all mount-to-frame bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Once all bolts are started, tighten them to specification using a torque wrench in a cross pattern if multiple bolts are present.
    Torque spec
    Engine Mount-to-Frame Bolts75 Nm (55 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Install mount through-bolt
Insert the mount through-bolt through the mount assembly and bracket. Install the through-bolt nut and tighten to specification. Ensure the mount rubber isolator is properly seated and not twisted.
  11. 11
    Install mount-to-engine block bolts
Install the bolts connecting the mount to the engine block. Start all bolts by hand, then torque to specification in sequence from center outward if multiple bolts are present.
    Torque spec
    Engine Mount-to-Block Bolts65 Nm (48 lb-ft)
  12. 12
Install upper cover and remove engine support
Reinstall the upper mount cover or bracket cover and torque cover bolts to specification. Carefully lower and remove the engine support jack or bar. The engine weight should now transfer fully to all mounts.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall front splash shield if removed
  2. Lower vehicle from jack stands
  3. Reconnect negative battery cable
  4. Remove wheel chocks

Verification

  • Start engine and verify no abnormal vibration or movement at idle
  • With engine running, have an assistant shift through drive ranges while observing engine movement - motion should be minimal and controlled
  • Rev engine to approximately 2500 RPM and release - engine should return to position smoothly without excessive rocking
  • Test drive vehicle and verify no abnormal vibration during acceleration or deceleration
  • Perform final visual inspection of all mount bolts to ensure proper torque and no looseness
