Parts
- Electric Power Steering (EPS) Control Module × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Dielectric grease (for electrical connectors) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and ensure steering wheel is centered and straight.
- Turn ignition off and remove key.
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait at least 3 minutes.
- Ensure engine is cool to the touch if recent driving has occurred.
Procedure
- 1Access lower driver dash areaRemove the lower driver side dashboard panel by removing the retaining screws and releasing the plastic clips. This provides access to the steering column and EPS module location. Pull the panel away gently to avoid breaking clips.
- 2Locate EPS control moduleThe EPS control module is mounted on the steering column assembly, typically on the lower portion near the firewall. It is a rectangular electronic control unit with a large multi-pin connector. Verify you have located the correct module before proceeding.
- 3Disconnect EPS module electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the main EPS module connector and carefully pull the connector straight out. Do not pull on the wires. If connector is difficult to remove, gently wiggle while pulling. Note the connector orientation for reinstallation.
- 4Remove EPS module mounting boltsRemove the mounting bolts securing the EPS module to the steering column bracket. There are typically 2-3 bolts holding the module in place. Support the module with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 5Remove EPS control moduleCarefully slide the EPS module away from the steering column and out of the vehicle. Handle the module by its housing, avoiding contact with electrical pins. Set the old module aside on a clean, non-conductive surface.
- 6Inspect mounting area and connectorsExamine the mounting bracket for any damage or corrosion. Check the electrical connector pins in the vehicle harness for corrosion, bent pins, or contamination. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary. Verify the connector seal is intact.
- 7Install new EPS modulePosition the new EPS module onto the steering column bracket, aligning the mounting holes. Ensure the module is oriented correctly with the connector accessible. Hand-thread all mounting bolts before tightening any of them.
- 8Torque EPS module mounting boltsUsing a torque wrench, tighten the EPS module mounting bolts in a cross pattern to ensure even pressure. Verify the module is secure and does not move when gently pulled.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorApply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector pins if desired for corrosion protection. Align the connector with the module and push firmly until you hear and feel a positive click. Tug gently on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
- 10Reinstall lower dash panelPosition the lower dashboard panel back into place, ensuring all clips align with their receptacles. Press firmly on clip locations until they snap into place. Reinstall any retaining screws removed earlier.
- 11Reconnect battery and initialize systemReconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to ON position without starting the engine. The EPS warning light should illuminate briefly then turn off. If the light remains on, the system may require dealer-level calibration or programming.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connections are fully seated and locked before reconnecting battery.
- Verify the steering wheel remains centered throughout the procedure.
- Some vehicles may require steering angle sensor calibration after EPS module replacement using dealer diagnostic equipment.
Verification
- Start the engine and verify the EPS warning light extinguishes within a few seconds.
- Turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock while stationary, listening for unusual noises or feeling abnormal resistance.
- Test drive the vehicle at low speed in a safe area, verifying normal power steering assist in both directions.
- Confirm no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster.
- Check for any diagnostic trouble codes using an OBD-II scanner if warning lights persist.
