This procedure covers the replacement of a single headlight bulb on a 2015 Kia Forte with 1.8L I4 engine, requiring access through the engine compartment.

Warnings

Allow headlights to cool for at least 10 minutes before attempting bulb replacement to avoid burns.
Never touch the glass portion of a halogen bulb with bare hands. Oil from skin will cause premature bulb failure and hot spots.
ℹ️Determine which bulb needs replacement: inner bulb is low beam (H11), outer bulb is high beam (9005).

Tools required

Gloves (lint-free)Essential
Flashlight or work light
Small flathead screwdriver

Parts

  • Headlight bulb (H11 low beam or 9005 high beam) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is off and headlights have cooled completely
  2. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  3. Identify which headlight assembly (driver or passenger side) requires bulb replacement
  4. Put on lint-free gloves to prevent skin oil contact with new bulb

Procedure

  1. 1
Access headlight assembly from engine bay
Locate the back of the headlight assembly from inside the engine compartment. The bulb access cover is a round dust cap on the rear of the headlight housing. For the driver side, you may need to reach around the battery and air box. For the passenger side, access is more direct.
  2. 2
    Remove bulb access cover
Rotate the rubber dust cover counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and pull it straight back off the headlight housing. Set the cover aside in a clean location to prevent contamination.
  3. 3
    Disconnect electrical connector
Press the release tab on the bulb's electrical connector and pull it straight off the bulb base. Do not pull on the wires themselves.
  4. 4
    Release bulb retaining clip
Locate the wire retaining clip that holds the bulb in place. Press the clip inward toward the housing and swing it up and out of the way. The clip will remain attached to the housing but will pivot clear of the bulb.
  5. 5
    Remove old bulb
Carefully pull the old bulb straight out of the headlight housing socket. Avoid twisting or rocking the bulb excessively. Inspect the socket for any corrosion or damage.
  6. 6
    Install new bulb
While wearing gloves, remove the new bulb from its packaging. Align the bulb tabs with the slots in the socket and insert it straight in until it seats fully. Ensure the bulb is oriented correctly with the flat side of the base matching the socket alignment.
  7. 7
    Secure bulb with retaining clip
Swing the wire retaining clip back over the bulb base and press it down until it clicks into the locked position. Verify the clip is fully engaged and holding the bulb securely.
  8. 8
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector straight onto the bulb base until you hear or feel a positive click. Gently tug on the connector to confirm it is locked in place.
  9. 9
    Reinstall access cover
Align the rubber dust cover with the headlight housing and press it into place. Rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn to lock it in position. Ensure the cover seals properly to prevent moisture intrusion.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all wire connectors are secure and not pinched
  2. Verify dust cover is properly sealed to prevent moisture entry

Verification

  • Turn on ignition and test both low beam and high beam functions to confirm new bulb operates correctly
  • Check that headlight beam pattern is proper and not aimed incorrectly
  • Inspect for any error messages on instrument cluster
  • Close hood and verify all tools and materials are removed from engine compartment
