Parts
- Headlight switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Open driver's door and leave it open for access throughout procedure
- Allow interior components to cool if vehicle was recently operated
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalOpen hood and locate the battery in the engine compartment. Using a 10mm wrench, loosen the negative (-) battery terminal bolt and disconnect the cable. Secure the cable away from the terminal to prevent accidental reconnection. Wait 3 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove lower dashboard trim panelLocate the lower dashboard panel beneath the steering column. This panel is secured by plastic clips and may have 2-3 screws. Remove any visible screws, then use panel removal tools to carefully release the retaining clips by pulling gently outward at the bottom edge. Work around the perimeter until the panel is free. Disconnect any electrical connectors for panel illumination if present.
- 3Remove driver's side knee bolsterThe knee bolster is the padded panel directly under the steering column. Remove the mounting screws (typically 3-4 screws) located at the top and sides of the panel. Gently pull the panel away from the dash, being careful not to damage any clips. Set the panel aside in a safe location.
- 4Access headlight switch moduleWith the lower panels removed, you will have clear access to the back of the dashboard. Locate the headlight switch assembly to the left of the steering column. The switch is part of a larger module that includes other controls. Use a flashlight to identify the electrical connectors and mounting mechanism.
- 5Disconnect electrical connectorsLocate the main electrical connector on the back of the headlight switch assembly. Press the locking tab on the connector while pulling it straight back to disconnect. There may be 1-2 additional smaller connectors depending on the vehicle configuration (with/without auto headlights). Ensure all connectors are fully disconnected before proceeding.
- 6Remove headlight switch mounting fastenersThe headlight switch is typically secured by 2-3 screws or clips that attach it to the dashboard bracket. If screws are present, remove them using appropriate tool. If the switch uses a clip mechanism, press the release tabs while pulling the switch assembly toward the rear of the vehicle to disengage.
- 7Remove old headlight switchOnce all fasteners and connectors are released, carefully pull the headlight switch assembly out from the dashboard opening. Navigate it around any wiring harnesses or obstructions. Inspect the mounting area for any damage or debris before installing the new switch.
- 8Install new headlight switch assemblyPosition the new headlight switch assembly into the dashboard opening, ensuring proper alignment with mounting holes and that the switch faces the correct direction. If using a clip-type mount, push firmly until you hear or feel the clips engage. If using screws, start all screws by hand before tightening to ensure proper alignment.
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorsConnect all electrical connectors to the new headlight switch assembly, ensuring each connector clicks securely into place. Verify that connector locking tabs are fully engaged. Gently tug on each connector to confirm a secure connection. Match connectors to their original positions using reference photos taken during disassembly.
- 10Reinstall dashboard panelsReinstall the knee bolster panel by aligning it with the dashboard and securing with the original mounting screws. Reinstall the lower dashboard trim panel by first connecting any electrical connectors for panel lighting, then aligning the panel with the dash and pressing firmly to engage all retaining clips. Install any screws that were removed.
- 11Reconnect batteryReturn to the engine compartment and reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal. Ensure the terminal is clean and free of corrosion. Tighten the battery terminal bolt to specification using a 10mm wrench.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all dashboard panels are securely fastened with no gaps or loose clips
- Verify all screws have been reinstalled in their original locations
- Check that no tools or parts have been left in the dashboard area
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and test all headlight switch positions: off, parking lights, headlights
- If equipped, verify automatic headlight function operates correctly
- Test dashboard dimmer function if integrated with the headlight switch
- Verify instrument panel lights illuminate properly when headlights are activated
- Check that all dashboard panels are secure and aligned properly with no rattles
- Reset clock and radio presets as needed
