This procedure covers removal and replacement of the power steering gear box (rack and pinion assembly) on a 2015 Kia Forte with 1.8L I4 engine, including disconnecting steering linkage, hydraulic lines, and mounting hardware.
Warnings
⚠️Vehicle must be supported on jack stands rated for vehicle weight. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
⚠Power steering fluid will drain from disconnected lines. Have drain pan ready and contain all fluid for proper disposal.
⚠Steering wheel must remain locked in center position during rack removal to prevent clockspring damage.
ℹ️This procedure requires front-end alignment after completion. Plan accordingly.

Parts
- Power steering rack and pinion assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Power steering line O-rings × 2 — Typically 57148-2T000
- Tie rod end cotter pins × 2 — Use OEM specification
- Rack mounting hardware kit (if worn) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Fluids
- Kia PSF-4 — 1.5 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake. Chock rear wheels.
- Center steering wheel and lock it in place using steering wheel locking device or seatbelt through steering wheel.
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 3 minutes (SRS system discharge).
- Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands placed at manufacturer-specified lift points.
- Remove both front wheels.
- Extract as much power steering fluid as possible from reservoir using turkey baster or fluid extractor.
- Place large drain pan under steering rack area.
Procedure
- 1Remove tie rod ends from steering knucklesRemove cotter pins from both tie rod end castle nuts and discard. Loosen tie rod end castle nuts but do not remove completely. Using tie rod end separator tool, separate tie rod ends from steering knuckles. Remove castle nuts and set tie rod ends aside. Mark tie rod adjustment position on inner tie rod threads with paint or marker for alignment reference.
- 2Disconnect intermediate steering shaftFrom inside engine compartment, locate intermediate steering shaft connection at steering rack input shaft. Remove pinch bolt securing intermediate shaft to rack input shaft. Mark alignment of shaft to rack for reinstallation. Carefully slide intermediate shaft upward off rack input shaft splines. Do not rotate steering wheel or allow shaft to rotate.
- 3Disconnect power steering pressure linePosition drain pan directly under pressure line connection at rack. Using appropriate line wrench to prevent rounding, carefully loosen and remove pressure line fitting from steering rack. Allow fluid to drain completely. Cap or plug line and rack port to prevent contamination. Remove and discard O-ring from fitting.Torque specPressure Line Fitting32 Nm (24 lb-ft)
- 4Disconnect power steering return lineLocate return line connection at steering rack (lower connection). Using line wrench, loosen and remove return line fitting. Allow fluid to drain into pan. Cap or plug line and rack port. Remove and discard O-ring from fitting. Clean any spilled fluid from subframe and surrounding components.Torque specPower Steering Line Fittings30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 5Remove rack mounting brackets and hardwareLocate steering rack mounting brackets on either side of rack assembly attached to subframe. Remove bolts securing both mounting brackets to subframe. Note orientation and position of brackets and any shims or insulators. Support rack assembly with one hand while removing final mounting hardware.Torque specRack Bolts97 Nm (71 lb-ft)
- 6Remove steering rack assemblyWith all connections and mounting hardware removed, carefully maneuver steering rack assembly out through driver side wheel well opening. Angle rack as needed and work tie rod ends through their respective openings. May require rotation of rack to clear subframe and chassis components. Remove rack from vehicle and place on clean work surface.
- 7Prepare new steering rack for installationUnbox new steering rack and verify it matches old unit (tie rod configuration, mounting points, line connections). Verify rack is centered by measuring equal tie rod extension on both sides. Install new O-rings on both pressure and return line fittings, lightly lubricating with clean power steering fluid. Check that all mounting bushings and insulators are properly installed on new rack.
- 8Install steering rack assemblyManeuver new rack assembly into position through driver side wheel well, routing tie rod ends through appropriate openings. Align rack input shaft to center position. Position rack onto subframe mounting locations, ensuring all bushings and insulators seat properly. Hand-thread mounting bracket bolts but do not tighten yet.
- 9Secure rack mounting hardwareVerify rack is properly seated and centered in mounting location. Install all mounting bracket bolts and tighten evenly in cross pattern. Torque rack mounting bolts to specification. Ensure rack moves smoothly through full range of motion without binding.⚠Verify torque sequence with service manual as uneven tightening can cause rack binding.Torque specRack Bolts97 Nm (71 lb-ft)
- 10Connect power steering pressure and return linesRemove caps from rack ports and hydraulic lines. Install pressure line to rack port using new O-ring, hand-tightening first to ensure proper thread engagement. Torque pressure line fitting to specification. Connect return line with new O-ring and torque to specification. Ensure both fittings are properly seated without cross-threading.⚠Use line wrenches and avoid over-torquing which can damage fittings and cause leaks.Torque specPressure Line Fitting32 Nm (24 lb-ft)Power Steering Line Fittings30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect intermediate steering shaftAlign intermediate steering shaft with rack input shaft, matching marks made during disassembly. Verify steering wheel is still locked in center position. Slide intermediate shaft onto rack input shaft splines ensuring full engagement. Install pinch bolt and torque to specification per service manual.
- 12Install tie rod ends to steering knucklesThread tie rod ends into steering knuckle tapers, aligning to previously marked adjustment positions. Install castle nuts and torque to specification. Install new cotter pins through castle nut slots, bending pins to secure. Verify tie rod ends are properly seated in knuckle tapers.ℹ️If castle nut slot does not align with cotter pin hole at specified torque, tighten further to next slot. Never loosen to align.Torque specTie Rod End Castle Nut55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 13Install wheels and lower vehicleInstall both front wheels, hand-threading all lug nuts first. Torque wheel lug nuts to specification in star pattern. Remove jack stands and carefully lower vehicle to ground. Perform final lug nut torque check with vehicle weight on wheels.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts129 Nm (95 lb-ft)
- 14Fill and bleed power steering systemRemove steering wheel lock. Fill power steering reservoir with Kia PSF-4 fluid to upper mark. Start engine and let idle. Turn steering wheel slowly lock-to-lock 5-10 times without holding at full lock. Check fluid level and add as needed. Continue until no air bubbles appear in reservoir and fluid level stabilizes. Check for leaks at all connection points.
Reassembly
- Reconnect negative battery cable and verify no warning lights remain illuminated.
- Check power steering fluid level after test drive and top off if necessary.
- Inspect all hydraulic connections for leaks after system reaches operating temperature.
- Vehicle MUST be taken for professional front-end alignment as soon as possible after this repair.
Verification
- Start engine and verify no power steering fluid leaks at rack connections or hydraulic lines.
- Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock while stationary and verify smooth operation without binding or unusual noise.
- Test drive vehicle at low speed and verify proper steering response and centering.
- Check power steering fluid level is at proper mark with engine at operating temperature.
- Verify no warning lights are illuminated on instrument cluster.
- Schedule front-end alignment within 24 hours to prevent premature tire wear.
