This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the power steering fluid reservoir on a 2015 Kia Forte with the 1.8L I4 engine.
Warnings
⚠Power steering fluid is corrosive and can damage paint. Clean any spills immediately.
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before starting work to avoid burns from hot components.
ℹ️The reservoir is located on the driver's side of the engine bay near the firewall.

Parts
- Power steering reservoir × 1 — Use OEM specification
- O-rings for power steering line fittings × 2 — Use OEM specification
- Hose clamps (if damaged) × 2 — Use OEM specification
Fluids
- Kia PSF-4 — 1 qt
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
- Place drain pan under work area to catch fluid spills
- Have shop towels ready to contain fluid during removal
- Open hood and secure in upright position
Procedure
- 1Remove engine coverRemove the plastic engine cover by pulling upward on the cover to disengage the mounting clips. Set aside in a clean area.
- 2Drain power steering fluid from reservoirUsing a fluid transfer pump or turkey baster, remove as much power steering fluid as possible from the reservoir. Pour the old fluid into a drain pan for proper disposal. This will minimize spillage during removal.
- 3Disconnect return hoseLocate the return hose (lower hose) connected to the bottom of the reservoir. Use pliers to compress and slide the hose clamp away from the reservoir connection point. Gently twist and pull the hose off the reservoir fitting. Be prepared for residual fluid to drain out. Place a shop towel underneath to catch fluid.⚠Residual fluid will spill when hose is removed. Keep drain pan positioned properly.
- 4Disconnect pressure lineUse a 10mm socket to loosen the pressure line fitting at the reservoir. This is the metal hard line connection on the side or bottom of the reservoir. Once loosened, carefully unthread by hand and separate the line from the reservoir. Cap or plug the line opening to prevent contamination.ℹ️Note the position of the old O-ring for proper replacement orientation.Torque specPower Steering Line Fittings30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 5Remove reservoir mounting hardwareLocate the reservoir mounting bolt(s) securing the reservoir to the bracket on the engine or firewall. Use a 10mm socket to remove the mounting bolt(s). Support the reservoir while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 6Remove reservoirCarefully lift the reservoir up and out of the engine bay. Keep it upright to prevent remaining fluid from spilling. Pour any remaining fluid into the drain pan. Inspect the mounting bracket for damage or corrosion.
- 7Prepare new reservoirRemove the new reservoir from packaging. Install new O-rings on the pressure line fitting location, lightly lubricating them with fresh power steering fluid. Ensure O-rings are seated properly in their grooves without twisting or pinching.
- 8Install new reservoirPosition the new reservoir into the mounting bracket in the same orientation as the old unit. Thread in the mounting bolt(s) by hand first to ensure proper alignment, then torque to specification using a torque wrench.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect pressure lineThread the pressure line fitting into the new reservoir by hand to avoid cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use a torque wrench with 10mm socket to tighten the fitting to specification. Do not over-tighten as this can damage the new O-rings.⚠Cross-threading will damage the new reservoir. Ensure fitting threads smoothly by hand before using tools.Torque specPower Steering Line Fittings30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect return hosePush the return hose firmly onto the reservoir fitting until it bottoms out. Slide the hose clamp back into position over the connection point, positioning it approximately 1/4 inch from the end of the hose. If the old clamp is damaged, replace with a new one.
- 11Fill reservoir with fresh fluidUsing a funnel, fill the reservoir with fresh Kia PSF-4 power steering fluid to the cold fill line or MAX mark on the reservoir. Start with approximately 0.5 quarts and add more as needed during bleeding process.
- 12Bleed air from systemWith the engine off, turn the steering wheel fully left and right several times (lock to lock) to circulate fluid and purge air. Check fluid level and add as needed. Start the engine and let it idle. Turn the steering wheel lock to lock 3-4 times while engine is running. Check for leaks at all connections. Top off fluid to the HOT mark once system is at operating temperature.⚠Do not hold steering wheel at full lock for more than 5 seconds to avoid damaging the power steering pump.
Reassembly
- Reinstall engine cover by aligning clips and pressing down firmly until all clips engage
- Wipe down any spilled power steering fluid from engine bay components and painted surfaces
- Dispose of old power steering fluid according to local environmental regulations
Verification
- Check power steering fluid level is at the HOT mark with engine at operating temperature
- Verify no leaks are present at reservoir connections after test drive
- Confirm power steering operates smoothly with no whining noise or heavy steering effort
- Turn steering wheel lock to lock several times to ensure proper operation and no unusual noises
