Parts

  • Transmission shift cable assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Cable grommets (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Plastic cable retaining clips × 2 — Replace if broken during removal

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake firmly
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Ensure transmission is in Park position
  4. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove center console components
Remove the center console trim panel surrounding the shifter assembly. Remove cover screws securing the shifter boot and trim. Carefully pry up the shifter trim panel using trim removal tools to avoid breaking clips. Disconnect any electrical connectors for the shifter illumination or accessory power outlets.

    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  2. 2
Access shift cable at shifter assembly
With the shifter trim removed, locate the shift cable connection at the base of the shifter assembly. Using a flat blade screwdriver, carefully pry the cable end bushing from the shifter lever ball stud. Remove the cable adjustment nut from the cable bracket using a 14mm wrench. Note the position of any adjustment washers or spacers.
    Torque spec
    Adjustment Nut10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  3. 3
Remove cable bracket from shifter assembly
Remove the cable bracket bolts securing the shift cable bracket to the shifter assembly using a 10mm socket. Carefully extract the cable and grommet from the floor pan. The cable should pull through into the engine compartment.
    Torque spec
    Cable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Raise and secure vehicle
Raise the front of the vehicle using a floor jack and support securely on jack stands. Remove the driver side front wheel to improve access. Remove any necessary splash shields or underbody panels to access the transmission shift lever area.
  5. 5
    Disconnect cable at transmission
Locate the shift cable connection on the transmission shift lever (located on driver side of transmission). Using pliers, squeeze and remove the retaining clip securing the cable end to the transmission shift lever. Carefully pry the cable end bushing from the transmission lever ball stud using a flat blade screwdriver.
Do not use excessive force on transmission shift lever as internal detents can be damaged.
  6. 6
    Remove cable bracket at transmission
Remove the mounting bolts securing the shift cable bracket to the transmission case using a 12mm socket. There are typically two bolts securing this bracket. Carefully route the cable away from the transmission and note the cable routing path along the chassis for proper reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Remove cable from vehicle
Trace the shift cable path from transmission to cabin, removing any cable retaining clips along the chassis and subframe. Note cable routing, especially around heat shields and away from exhaust components. Pull the cable completely out through the firewall grommet from the engine bay side.
  8. 8
    Install new shift cable
Route the new shift cable from the cabin through the firewall grommet into the engine compartment, ensuring the grommet seats properly in the floor pan opening. Follow the noted routing path along the chassis, securing cable with retaining clips at all original locations. Ensure cable is routed away from exhaust, sharp edges, and moving components.
Cable must maintain proper clearance from exhaust manifold and catalytic converter to prevent heat damage.
  9. 9
    Attach cable at transmission
Position the shift cable bracket to the transmission case and install mounting bolts. Torque bolts to specification using a torque wrench. With transmission lever in Park position (fully rearward), snap the cable end bushing onto the transmission shift lever ball stud. Install the retaining clip to secure the cable end.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reinstall underbody components and wheel
Reinstall any splash shields or underbody panels that were removed. Install the driver side front wheel and hand-tighten lug nuts. Lower vehicle to ground and torque wheel lug nuts to 80-94 lb-ft in a star pattern.
  11. 11
    Connect cable at shifter assembly
Inside the cabin, route the cable through the shifter assembly bracket and install the cable bracket to the shifter base. Install and hand-tighten the cable bracket bolts. Snap the cable end bushing onto the shifter lever ball stud. Thread the adjustment nut onto the cable bracket but leave loose for adjustment.
    Torque spec
    Cable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Adjust shift cable
Ensure transmission lever at transmission is in Park position (fully rearward). Place shifter inside cabin in Park position. Hold the cable housing firmly and tighten the adjustment nut to specification. Verify cable is not twisted or kinked. Check that shifter moves smoothly through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-S) with positive detents.
⚠️Before starting engine, verify transmission is actually in Park when shifter indicates Park. Verify gear position matches shifter position in all ranges to prevent unexpected vehicle movement.
    Torque spec
    Adjustment Nut10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    Reinstall console trim
Reconnect any electrical connectors for shifter illumination. Position the shifter trim panel and press firmly to engage all retaining clips. Install cover screws and torque to specification. Reinstall all remaining center console trim panels.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  14. 14
    Final verification and testing
Reconnect the negative battery cable. With brake pedal depressed and engine off, verify shifter moves smoothly through all positions with proper detents. Start engine and verify transmission engages properly in each gear (Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Sport). Verify Park position prevents vehicle from rolling. Check that engine only starts in Park and Neutral positions. Verify backup lights illuminate in Reverse.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all cable retaining clips are properly installed along the entire cable routing path
  2. Verify cable has proper clearance from exhaust components and sharp edges throughout its routing
  3. Double-check that all console trim panels are securely fastened and electrical connectors are properly seated

Verification

  • With engine running and brake applied, shift through all gear positions and verify smooth engagement with no binding or excessive effort
  • Verify transmission gear position indicator on instrument cluster matches actual shifter position in all ranges
  • Confirm vehicle will only start when shifter is in Park or Neutral positions
  • On level ground in Park with engine running, verify vehicle does not roll when parking brake is released
  • Verify backup lights and reverse indicators function when shifted into Reverse
  • Road test vehicle and confirm all transmission functions operate normally with smooth shifts
