Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key
  3. Open hood and disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts
  4. Wait 3 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge before working near overhead console
  5. Ensure sunroof is in the fully closed position before beginning work

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove overhead console lens cover
Using a trim panel removal tool, carefully pry down the front edge of the overhead console lens cover near the map lights. Work slowly around the perimeter to release the retaining clips without breaking them. The cover snaps into place and does not use screws on this model year.
The lens cover clips are plastic and can break easily. Apply gentle, even pressure when releasing clips.
  2. 2
    Disconnect map light connectors
Locate the electrical connectors for the map lights on the back of the overhead console lens assembly. Press the locking tab on each connector and gently pull straight out to disconnect. Set the lens assembly aside in a safe location.
  3. 3
    Remove overhead console mounting screws
Locate and remove the Phillips head screws securing the overhead console base to the headliner. There are typically 2-3 screws depending on equipment level. Keep screws organized for reassembly.
  4. 4
    Lower overhead console assembly
Carefully pull down the overhead console assembly from the headliner. Lower it enough to access the wiring harnesses on the back side, but do not pull excessively on the wires. Support the console with one hand while working.
Do not let the console hang by its wiring harnesses. Support the assembly to prevent wire damage.
  5. 5
    Disconnect sunroof switch connector
Locate the sunroof switch electrical connector on the back of the overhead console. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight out to disconnect. Note the connector orientation for reassembly.
  6. 6
    Remove sunroof switch from console
The sunroof switch is retained in the overhead console by clips or small tabs. Press the release tabs on both sides of the switch and push it out from the front of the console housing. The switch should release with moderate pressure.
  7. 7
    Install new sunroof switch
Position the new sunroof switch into the overhead console opening from the front. Press firmly until the retaining tabs click into place on both sides. Verify the switch is fully seated and flush with the console surface.
  8. 8
    Reconnect electrical connector
Connect the electrical connector to the new sunroof switch, ensuring it clicks into place and the locking tab engages. Verify the connection is secure by gently tugging on the connector.
  9. 9
    Reinstall overhead console
Lift the overhead console back into position against the headliner. Align the screw holes and install the Phillips head screws. Tighten screws evenly to avoid warping the console, using appropriate torque for plastic assemblies.
  10. 10
Reconnect map lights and install lens
Connect the map light electrical connectors to the back of the lens assembly. Position the lens cover and press firmly around the perimeter until all retaining clips snap into place. Ensure the cover is fully seated.
  11. 11
    Reconnect battery and initialize
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten to specification. Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine off) and verify all overhead console functions operate correctly.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Verify overhead console lens is properly clipped in place with no gaps
  3. Reset clock and radio presets as needed after battery reconnection
  4. If equipped with automatic transmission, perform idle relearn by allowing engine to idle in Park for 2-3 minutes after first start

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and test sunroof switch in all positions: tilt up, tilt down, slide open, slide close
  • Verify sunroof operates smoothly in both tilt and slide modes without binding
  • Test the auto-open and auto-close functions (if equipped) by pressing and releasing the switch
  • Confirm map lights and other overhead console functions operate normally
  • Check that overhead console is securely mounted with no rattles or loose components
  • Verify sunroof closes and seals properly, with no gaps in the closed position
