Remove all four wheels and balance each tire using a tire balancing machine to eliminate vibration and ensure even tire wear.
Warnings
⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
⚠Loosen lug nuts before raising vehicle. Attempting to loosen them while vehicle is suspended can cause it to fall off jack stands.
ℹ️Mark wheel positions (LF, RF, LR, RR) before removal if tire rotation is not being performed simultaneously.

Parts
- Clip-on wheel weights (assorted) × 1 — Use appropriate weight sizes as determined by balancer
- Adhesive wheel weights (assorted) × 1 — Use appropriate weight sizes as determined by balancer
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level, solid ground and engage parking brake
- Loosen all wheel lug nuts 1/4 turn while vehicle is still on the ground
- Raise vehicle using floor jack at designated jacking points
- Place jack stands under vehicle frame rails at appropriate support points
- Lower vehicle onto jack stands and ensure stability before working
Procedure
- 1Remove all four wheelsRemove the loosened lug nuts completely and carefully remove each wheel from the vehicle. Mark or keep track of wheel positions if rotation is not being performed. Inspect wheels for damage, cracks, or bent rims that could affect balancing.
- 2Inspect and clean wheel mounting surfacesUse a wire brush to clean the wheel mounting hub face and the back of each wheel where it contacts the hub. Remove any rust, dirt, or debris that could prevent proper seating of the wheel. This is critical for accurate balancing and to prevent vibration.
- 3Remove old wheel weightsUse wheel weight pliers to remove all existing clip-on weights from the wheel rim edges. Peel off any adhesive weights from the inside of the wheel. Clean any adhesive residue with a suitable cleaner to ensure proper adhesion of new weights.
- 4Mount first wheel on balancing machineSelect the correct cone adapter for the wheel center bore and mount the wheel securely on the tire balancing machine spindle. Enter the wheel diameter, width, and offset distance measurements into the balancer per machine instructions. Lower the hood or guard if equipped.
- 5Spin wheel and determine balance correctionStart the spin cycle on the tire balancer. Allow the machine to complete its measurement cycle and display the amount and location of weight needed for both the inner and outer rim positions. Note the displayed weight amounts and clock positions.
- 6Install balancing weightsInstall clip-on weights at the outer rim edge at the position indicated by the balancer (typically 12 o'clock position when wheel stops). Install adhesive weights on the inner rim surface at the indicated position. Ensure weights are firmly seated and properly attached.
- 7Verify balance and fine-tuneSpin the wheel again on the balancer to verify balance correction. The machine should indicate zero or minimal residual imbalance (typically less than 0.25 oz per side). Add or adjust weights as needed until acceptable balance is achieved. Remove wheel from balancer and repeat steps 4-7 for remaining three wheels.
- 8Reinstall wheels onto vehicleMount each balanced wheel back onto its respective hub position, ensuring the wheel seats flush against the hub mounting surface. Hand-thread all five lug nuts onto the studs to prevent cross-threading.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts140 Nm (103 lb-ft)
- 9Torque lug nuts to specificationUsing a torque wrench, tighten the lug nuts to 140 Nm (103 lb-ft) in a star pattern (criss-cross sequence). Start with the top lug nut, then move to the bottom, then alternate between remaining nuts to ensure even clamping pressure. Repeat the star pattern sequence to verify all nuts are properly torqued.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts140 Nm (103 lb-ft)
- 10Lower vehicle and final torque checkRaise vehicle slightly off jack stands using floor jack, remove jack stands, and carefully lower vehicle to the ground. With vehicle weight on wheels, perform a final torque check on all lug nuts in star pattern to ensure proper seating and torque retention.
Reassembly
- Ensure all lug nuts are torqued to specification in a star pattern
- Verify no tools or parts are left near wheel wells or under vehicle
- Recommend re-torquing lug nuts after 50-100 miles of driving
Verification
- Test drive vehicle at various speeds (up to highway speed if safe) to verify elimination of vibration
- Steering wheel should remain steady with no shaking at any speed
- No unusual tire wear patterns should develop after balancing
- Visually inspect that all wheel weights are still firmly attached after test drive
