Replace or reprogram the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) sensor on a 2015 Kia Forte to restore tire pressure monitoring functionality.

Warnings

Ensure vehicle is on a stable, level surface before raising. Use jack stands; never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
ℹ️TPMS sensors can be damaged during tire removal. Work carefully to avoid bending or breaking the valve stem.
ℹ️The TPMS sensor must be programmed to the vehicle after installation. Ensure you have the proper programming tool before beginning.

Parts

  • TPMS sensor × 1 — 52933-A7000 or compatible aftermarket
  • Valve stem service kit × 1 — Use with TPMS sensor replacement
  • Valve core × 1 — Included in service kit

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind wheels that will remain on the ground
  3. Identify which wheel has the faulty TPMS sensor (use scan tool to read sensor IDs if necessary)
  4. Loosen wheel lug nuts 1/4 turn while wheel is still on the ground
  5. If tire shop access is available, sensor replacement can be done more efficiently with a tire machine

Procedure

  1. 1
    Raise vehicle and remove wheel
Raise the vehicle using a floor jack at the appropriate jacking point near the affected wheel. Secure with jack stands. Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the wheel. Store lug nuts in a clean location.
  2. 2
    Deflate tire completely
Remove the valve cap and use a valve core removal tool to extract the valve core. Allow the tire to deflate completely. This is necessary to break the tire bead safely.
  3. 3
    Break tire bead
Use a bead breaker or tire spoons to break the tire bead on both sides of the rim. Start opposite the valve stem location. Work carefully around the circumference to avoid damaging the rim or tire.
  4. 4
    Remove tire from rim
Using tire spoons, carefully pry one bead of the tire over the rim edge, working around the circumference. Once one side is off, pull the tire away from the rim to access the TPMS sensor mounted to the valve stem hole. Work carefully near the sensor to avoid damage.
Use plastic tire spoons or be extremely careful with metal tools to avoid scratching the wheel finish or damaging the tire bead.
  5. 5
    Remove old TPMS sensor
Locate the TPMS sensor attached to the valve stem inside the wheel. The sensor is typically held by a nut on the valve stem. Unscrew the retaining nut and carefully pull the sensor and valve stem assembly through the rim from the inside. Note the orientation for installation.
  6. 6
    Install new TPMS sensor
Insert the new TPMS sensor valve stem through the wheel rim hole from the inside. Install the valve stem nut and tighten to manufacturer specification (typically hand-tight plus 1/4 turn, or 4-6 Nm if specified by sensor manufacturer). Ensure the sensor body is positioned correctly inside the tire to avoid contact with the rim during mounting.
  7. 7
    Remount tire on rim
Position the tire back onto the rim, ensuring proper orientation (match any directional arrows on the tire). Use tire spoons to work the first bead over the rim edge, then work the second bead over. Apply tire lubricant if needed. Ensure the tire beads are seated in the center drop of the rim.
  8. 8
    Inflate tire and seat beads
Install a new valve core into the valve stem. Inflate the tire gradually, listening for both beads to pop into place on the rim. Inflate to the pressure specified on the driver door jamb sticker (typically 33 PSI front and rear for 2015 Forte). Check that both beads are seated evenly around the entire circumference.
Stand clear of the tire sidewall during initial inflation. If beads do not seat by 40 PSI, deflate and reposition the tire.
  9. 9
    Reinstall wheel on vehicle
Mount the wheel back onto the hub, ensuring it seats flush. Install lug nuts by hand, threading each one before tightening any. Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench to specification.
    Torque spec
    Wheel Lug Nuts140 Nm (103 lb-ft)
  10. 10
Lower vehicle and program TPMS sensor
Remove jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground. With the vehicle ignition on (engine can be off), use a TPMS programming tool or compatible scan tool to enter TPMS learning mode. Follow the tool's instructions to register the new sensor ID to the vehicle's TPMS control module. This typically involves triggering each sensor in a specific sequence (LF, RF, RR, LR).

Reassembly

  1. Verify all lug nuts are torqued to specification in a star pattern
  2. Install valve stem cap to protect the valve core from debris and moisture
  3. Reset the TPMS warning light using the vehicle's TPMS reset button (if equipped) or through the scan tool

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify the TPMS warning light extinguishes after a few seconds of driving
  • Use a scan tool to confirm all four TPMS sensors are reporting data and the new sensor ID is recognized
  • Check tire pressure with a gauge to confirm it matches the door jamb specification
  • Drive the vehicle for 5-10 minutes and verify the TPMS light does not illuminate
  • Verify no air leaks around the valve stem by applying soapy water and checking for bubbles
