Parts
- Rear window regulator and motor assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Door panel clips × 1 — Replace any damaged clips
- Vapor barrier tape × 1 — If damaged during removal
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts and accidental window operation
- Wait 3 minutes after battery disconnect to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Roll rear window to approximately mid-position if still operational before disconnecting battery
- Gather all tools and replacement parts
Procedure
- 1Remove rear door panelRemove the screw cover from the door pull handle. Remove the Torx screws securing the door pull handle. Carefully pry around the perimeter of the door panel using panel removal tools, releasing all retaining clips. Lift the door panel upward and away from the door frame. Disconnect any electrical connectors for speakers, power locks, or window switches as you remove the panel.
- 2Remove door vapor barrierCarefully peel back the vapor barrier from the door frame, working slowly to avoid tearing. If the barrier is plastic sheeting with adhesive, use gentle heat from a heat gun if necessary to soften the adhesive. Leave the barrier partially attached at the bottom if possible for easier reinstallation, or remove completely if full access is needed.
- 3Disconnect window motor electrical connectorLocate the window motor electrical connector inside the door cavity. Press the locking tab and disconnect the electrical connector from the window motor. Ensure the connector is moved away from the work area to prevent damage.
- 4Secure window glass in up positionManually raise the window glass to the full up position. Use masking tape to secure the glass to the door frame, applying tape from the inside of the door to the top edge of the glass. Alternatively, have a helper hold the glass in position during regulator removal. This prevents the glass from falling when the regulator is detached.
- 5Disconnect glass from regulatorLocate the two bolts securing the window glass to the regulator lift channel. These are typically accessed through holes in the inner door frame. Remove the mounting bolts connecting the window glass to the regulator assembly. Carefully support the glass to prevent it from slipping.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 6Remove window regulator mounting boltsLocate all regulator mounting bolts securing the regulator assembly to the door frame. There are typically 3-4 mounting bolts. Remove all mounting bolts while supporting the regulator and motor assembly to prevent it from falling into the door cavity.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 7Remove regulator and motor assemblyCarefully maneuver the window regulator and motor assembly out through the access opening in the door frame. The assembly may need to be angled and rotated to clear the inner door structure. Guide any attached cables through the door frame carefully to avoid snagging or damage.
- 8Install new regulator and motor assemblyPosition the new window regulator and motor assembly into the door cavity, routing any cables carefully through the door frame. Align the regulator mounting holes with the door frame mounting points. Install all mounting bolts finger-tight first, then torque to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even mounting pressure.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 9Connect glass to regulatorRemove tape securing the window glass. Carefully lower the glass until the mounting holes in the glass bracket align with the regulator lift channel. Install the mounting bolts and torque to specification. Verify the glass is seated properly in the regulator channel before final tightening.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 10Connect electrical and test operationConnect the window motor electrical connector, ensuring it clicks into place. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Before reinstalling the door panel, test window operation through several full up and down cycles to verify proper function and alignment. Check for any binding or unusual noises.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 11Reinstall vapor barrier and door panelReposition the vapor barrier on the door frame, ensuring it seals completely around the perimeter. Replace any damaged adhesive tape as needed. Reconnect all electrical connectors for switches and speakers. Align the door panel with the door frame and press firmly around the perimeter to seat all retaining clips. Reinstall the door pull handle screws and replace the screw covers.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify vapor barrier is properly sealed to prevent moisture intrusion
- Check that all door panel clips are properly engaged before final testing
- Replace any damaged door panel clips to ensure secure panel attachment
Verification
- Test rear window operation through multiple complete up and down cycles
- Verify window travels smoothly without binding or hesitation
- Check window alignment in fully closed position - glass should seal properly against weatherstripping
- Verify no unusual noises during window operation
- Test auto-up and auto-down features if equipped
- Perform window initialization procedure if required: with ignition on, fully lower window and hold switch down for 3 seconds, then fully raise window and hold switch up for 3 seconds
- Check door panel for secure attachment with no loose clips or rattles
