Warnings

⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
⚠️Diesel fuel system operates under extremely high pressure. Relieve fuel pressure before servicing fuel system components.
Ensure engine and exhaust system are completely cool before starting work. Diesel engines retain heat for extended periods.
Gear oil and transmission fluid must be at operating temperature for accurate level checks. Follow proper fill procedures.
The 6.7L Cummins uses a large amount of oil (13 quarts). Ensure adequate drain pan capacity.
ℹ️This service interval is critical for diesel engine longevity. Use only specified Mopar fluids to maintain warranty coverage.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Engine Oil and Filter Service
Locate the oil drain plug on the oil pan. Place drain pan underneath and remove drain plug, allowing all oil to drain completely (approximately 15 minutes due to high volume). Remove oil filter using filter wrench. Clean filter mounting surface, apply thin film of clean oil to new filter gasket, install new filter hand-tight plus 3/4 turn. Reinstall drain plug with new gasket if applicable. Fill engine with 13 quarts of Mopar 5W-20 Synthetic Blend oil through fill cap on valve cover.
  2. 2
    Fuel Filter/Water Separator Replacement
Locate fuel filter assembly on driver side frame rail. Place drain pan underneath. Open water drain valve at bottom of filter housing and drain water/fuel mixture. Close drain valve. Use fuel filter wrench to remove filter canister by turning counterclockwise. Clean mounting surface on filter head. Fill new filter with clean diesel fuel to prime system. Install new filter hand-tight, then tighten an additional 1/2 turn. Prime fuel system using manual primer pump on filter housing (if equipped) or by cycling ignition key 3-4 times without starting. Start engine and inspect for leaks.
Diesel fuel will drain from filter housing. Ensure adequate catch pan is positioned.
  3. 3
    Engine Air Filter Replacement
Open hood and locate air filter housing on driver side of engine bay. Release spring clips or remove fasteners securing air box cover. Remove old air filter element and inspect housing for debris. Clean housing with damp cloth if necessary. Install new air filter ensuring proper seating in housing. Reinstall cover and secure all clips/fasteners.
  4. 4
    Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Locate cabin air filter access behind glove box. Remove glove box by releasing stop arms on sides and lowering. Remove cabin air filter access door. Slide out old cabin air filter, noting airflow direction arrow. Install new filter matching airflow direction indicated on filter frame. Reinstall access door and glove box.
  5. 5
    Automatic Transmission Service
Locate transmission pan underneath vehicle. Place large drain pan underneath. Remove all transmission pan bolts except two at one corner, loosening those two to allow pan to tilt and drain. Once drained, remove remaining bolts and lower pan carefully. Remove old transmission filter by pulling straight down. Clean pan thoroughly and magnet. Install new filter, pushing firmly into place. Clean pan gasket surface on transmission. Install new gasket on pan. Reinstall pan and bolts in crisscross pattern. Add 5 quarts of Mopar ATF+4 through dipstick tube. Start engine, shift through all gears, return to park. Check level with engine running at operating temperature. Add remaining fluid as needed to reach proper level on dipstick.
Transmission fluid will drain rapidly once pan is loosened. Be prepared with adequate drain pan capacity.
  6. 6
    Front Differential Service
Locate front differential fill plug (upper) and drain plug (lower) on front axle housing. Remove fill plug first to ensure it's not seized. Place drain pan underneath and remove drain plug. Allow gear oil to drain completely. Clean magnetic drain plug of metal particles. Reinstall drain plug with new gasket. Using fluid pump, fill differential through fill hole with 75W-90 GL-5 gear oil until oil begins to drip from fill hole. Install fill plug with new gasket.
  7. 7
    Rear Differential Service
Locate rear differential cover on rear axle. Remove fill plug on front of differential housing to verify it's accessible. Place drain pan underneath differential cover. Remove all cover bolts and carefully pry cover away from housing. Allow gear oil to drain. Remove old gasket material from both cover and housing surfaces. Clean cover thoroughly and inspect for cracks. Install new gasket on cover or apply RTV sealant as specified. Reinstall cover with bolts in crisscross pattern. Fill differential through fill plug hole with Mopar 75W-140 synthetic gear lubricant until fluid reaches bottom of fill hole threads. Install fill plug.
  8. 8
    Transfer Case Service
Locate transfer case mounted to rear of transmission. Identify fill plug (on side) and drain plug (on bottom). Remove fill plug first. Place drain pan underneath and remove drain plug. Allow fluid to drain completely. Reinstall drain plug with new gasket. Using fluid pump, fill transfer case through fill hole with 2.5 quarts of Mopar Transfer Case Fluid until fluid begins to drip from fill hole. Install fill plug with new gasket.
  9. 9
    Coolant System Inspection and Top-Off
With engine completely cool, inspect coolant overflow reservoir level. Check that purple OAT coolant is at proper level between MIN and MAX marks. Inspect all coolant hoses for cracks, swelling, or deterioration. Check radiator cap seal condition. If coolant level is low, add Mopar OAT (Purple) coolant to proper level. Do not mix with other coolant types. Inspect coolant freeze point with refractometer or test strips if available.
⚠️Never open cooling system when hot. Pressurized coolant can cause severe burns.
  10. 10
    Brake Fluid Exchange
Locate brake fluid reservoir on master cylinder. Check fluid level and condition. If fluid is dark or contaminated, perform brake fluid flush starting at wheel farthest from master cylinder (right rear), then left rear, right front, left front. With helper pumping brake pedal, crack bleeder screw and collect old fluid. Top off reservoir frequently with fresh Mopar DOT 4 brake fluid. Continue until clean fluid emerges from bleeder. Repeat for all four wheels. Fill reservoir to MAX line.
  11. 11
    Serpentine Belt Inspection and Replacement
Inspect serpentine belt for cracks, glazing, fraying, or missing ribs. Check belt tensioner for proper operation and bearing noise. If belt shows wear or is original, replace now. Note belt routing diagram on fan shroud or underhood label. Use breaker bar on tensioner pulley bolt to release tension. Remove old belt. Install new belt following routing diagram. Verify belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves. Release tensioner.
  12. 12
    Chassis Lubrication
Locate all grease fittings on front suspension components including ball joints, tie rod ends, and driveline u-joints. Clean each fitting with rag. Using grease gun with Mopar chassis grease, pump grease into each fitting until fresh grease emerges from seal or fitting resists further greasing. Wipe excess grease away. Typical locations: upper and lower ball joints (4), tie rod ends (4), steering linkage (2), and driveshaft u-joints (4-6 depending on configuration).
  13. 13
    Comprehensive Vehicle Inspection
Inspect front and rear brake pads/shoes for remaining thickness. Check all brake rotors/drums for scoring or excessive wear. Inspect exhaust system for leaks, damage, or loose hangers. Check steering linkage for wear or loose components. Inspect all CV boots and driveshaft boots for tears. Examine shocks/struts for leaks. Check all lights for operation. Inspect tires for wear pattern and measure tread depth. Rotate tires if needed and adjust tire pressure to specification on door jamb sticker (typically 60-65 psi front, 75-80 psi rear for 2500).
  14. 14
    Final Fluid Level Verification
With vehicle on level ground and at operating temperature, recheck all fluid levels. Engine oil level should be between MIN and MAX on dipstick. Transmission fluid level should be in HOT range with engine running in park. Verify no leaks from any drain plugs or filters. Check power steering fluid level in reservoir. Top off windshield washer fluid reservoir with washer fluid (3.5 quart capacity).
