This procedure adds the correct amount of PAG oil to the AC compressor to maintain proper lubrication and system performance after service or oil loss.

Warnings

⚠️R-134a refrigerant can cause frostbite and asphyxiation. Work in a well-ventilated area and wear eye protection.
AC system oil capacity is critical. Overfilling can damage the compressor and reduce cooling efficiency.
Use only the specified PAG oil type. Incorrect oil will cause compressor failure.

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Ensure engine is cool to the touch
  3. Verify EPA Section 609 certification before handling refrigerant
  4. Gather all necessary AC service equipment and ensure proper calibration
  5. Locate AC compressor on driver side of engine below power steering pump

Procedure

  1. 1
    Recover refrigerant from AC system
    Connect AC recovery machine to service ports on AC lines. Follow machine manufacturer instructions to completely recover all R-134a refrigerant from the system. Record the amount of refrigerant recovered for recharge reference. Allow system to stabilize at atmospheric pressure.

    Disconnect compressor discharge line
    Locate the discharge line on top of the AC compressor. Use a line wrench to carefully loosen and remove the discharge line fitting. Remove and discard the old O-rings. Have a clean container ready to catch any residual oil that drains from the line or compressor port.
    Ensure all refrigerant has been recovered before opening any AC lines to prevent environmental release and personal injury.

    Measure and record old oil
    Pour any oil collected from the discharge line into a clean graduated container. Measure the amount using a digital scale or measuring cup. Note the color and condition of the oil. If oil appears contaminated or contains metal particles, further system diagnosis is required before proceeding.

    Calculate required oil quantity
    Determine the amount of oil to add based on service performed: If adding oil due to component replacement, refer to component specifications (compressor: 4 oz, condenser: 1 oz, evaporator: 2 oz, accumulator: 1 oz). If topping off due to measured loss, add the exact amount that was drained plus any component-specific amount. Do not exceed total system capacity of 8 oz.

    Inject PAG oil into compressor
    Connect oil injection tool to the compressor discharge port. Measure the calculated amount of fresh PAG 46 oil using a clean graduated container. Slowly inject the oil through the discharge port. Rotate the compressor clutch by hand 10 complete revolutions to distribute oil internally and prevent hydraulic lock on startup.
    Never overfill the compressor. Excess oil will circulate through the system and reduce cooling capacity while potentially damaging components.

    Install new O-rings on discharge fitting
    Lubricate new O-rings with a small amount of PAG oil. Install the O-rings onto the discharge line fitting, ensuring they are properly seated in their grooves. Inspect the sealing surfaces on both the line and compressor port for damage or debris.

    Reconnect discharge line
    Carefully thread the discharge line fitting onto the compressor port by hand to avoid cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use a torque wrench and line wrench to tighten to specification. Ensure the fitting is properly aligned and seated before applying torque.

    Evacuate AC system
    Connect AC vacuum pump to system service ports via manifold gauge set. Pull a vacuum on the system for a minimum of 45 minutes. System should reach and hold at least 29 inches Hg (98 kPa). After evacuation, close valves and observe gauges for 10 minutes to verify system holds vacuum without leaks.
    ℹ️Proper evacuation removes air and moisture which can cause compressor damage and poor cooling performance.

    Recharge AC system
    With engine off, charge the system with R-134a refrigerant to the amount recorded during recovery (typically 44-48 oz for this system). Monitor low and high side pressures on manifold gauges. Charge through the low-side port only when engine is off. If additional charging is needed, start engine and set AC to MAX with blower on high, then finish charging through low side only.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all AC line fittings are torqued to specification and showing no signs of leakage
  2. Remove manifold gauge set and install dust caps on AC service ports
  3. Document the amount of oil added and refrigerant charged for service records

Verification

  • Start engine and turn AC to MAX cooling with blower on high speed
  • Allow system to run for 5 minutes and verify compressor clutch engages and cycles normally
  • Check center dash vents for cold air output (should be 40-50°F below ambient temperature)
  • Monitor AC gauges: low side should read 25-45 PSI, high side 200-275 PSI at idle with ambient temperature 70-80°F
  • Inspect all AC fittings for signs of oil leakage using UV dye light if available
  • Verify no unusual noises from compressor during operation
  • Confirm AC system shuts off properly when temperature is reached or controls are switched off
