This procedure covers the replacement or installation of the backup camera on a 2014 Ram 2500 with 6.7L Cummins Diesel engine, including removal of the tailgate trim panel, camera installation, and wiring connection to the radio/display system.
Warnings
⚠Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes before working near airbag components or electrical systems to prevent accidental deployment or short circuits.
ℹ️Some 2014 Ram 2500 models may not have factory camera wiring pre-installed; verify wiring presence before beginning installation.
⚠Do not force trim panels or clips as they are fragile and can break easily. Use proper trim removal tools.

Parts
- Backup camera assembly × 1 — Use OEM Mopar part or compatible aftermarket
- Tailgate camera grommet × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Trim panel retaining clips (if damaged) × 5 — Mopar trim clips
- Wiring harness extension (if needed) × 1 — Camera-to-radio harness
- Dielectric grease × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes before proceeding
- Lower tailgate to horizontal position for access
- Clean tailgate area around camera location to prevent debris from entering during disassembly
- If replacing existing camera, verify new camera matches connector type and mounting configuration
Procedure
- 1Remove tailgate upper trim panelUsing trim panel removal tools, carefully pry the upper tailgate trim panel starting from one end. Release the retaining clips by working around the perimeter. There are typically 6-8 clips holding the panel. Pull the panel away from the tailgate once all clips are released. Be mindful of the backup camera connector if one is already installed.
- 2Disconnect existing camera (if equipped)Locate the backup camera electrical connector behind the trim panel. Press the connector locking tab and carefully pull the connector apart. If corrosion is present, spray with electrical contact cleaner and allow to dry before proceeding.
- 3Remove existing camera mounting hardwareRemove the camera mounting bolts or clips securing the camera to the tailgate. Factory cameras typically use either a twist-lock mechanism or 2-3 small mounting bolts. Carefully push the camera assembly through the tailgate opening from the inside.Torque specMounting Bolts46 Nm (34 lb-ft)
- 4Prepare new camera installation pointIf installing a new camera where none existed, mark the center point for the camera location on the tailgate (typically centered above the license plate). Use the camera mounting template if provided. Drill the required hole size per camera manufacturer specifications. Deburr the hole edges and apply rust preventative paint to exposed metal.
- 5Install camera grommet and feed wiringInstall the rubber grommet into the tailgate hole to protect the wiring. Feed the camera wiring harness through the grommet from the outside to inside of the tailgate. Leave enough slack to prevent tension on the connector when the tailgate is opened and closed.
- 6Mount backup camera assemblyPosition the camera assembly in the tailgate opening, ensuring proper orientation (lens facing rearward and level). Secure the camera using the provided mounting hardware. If using threaded bolts, hand-tighten first, then torque to specification using a torque wrench. Ensure camera is aligned properly before final tightening.Torque specMounting Bolts46 Nm (34 lb-ft)
- 7Route wiring through tailgate and bodyRoute the camera wiring harness through the tailgate internal channels toward the left side hinge area. Feed the harness through the factory wiring grommet at the tailgate hinge, following the existing wiring bundle. Use the factory routing clips to secure the harness and prevent chafing. Ensure wiring does not interfere with tailgate latch mechanism or hinges.
- 8Connect camera harness to vehicle wiringIf factory camera prep wiring exists, locate the connector behind the left rear interior trim panel near the tailgate opening. Connect the camera harness to the vehicle harness, ensuring a positive lock. Apply dielectric grease to the connector if exposed to weather. If no factory wiring exists, route harness to the radio/display unit location under the dashboard.
- 9Route harness to radio module (if applicable)For non-factory installations, route the camera harness along the driver side interior, following factory wiring bundles. Remove necessary trim panels to access routing path from rear to dashboard. Connect to the aftermarket or factory radio's camera input connector per manufacturer instructions. Secure all wiring with zip ties to prevent rattles.
- 10Reconnect battery and perform initial testReconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Turn the ignition to the ON position and shift the transmission into reverse. Verify the backup camera image appears on the display screen. Check for proper image orientation, clarity, and that guide lines (if equipped) appear correctly.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 11Reinstall trim panelsReinstall the tailgate upper trim panel by aligning the retaining clips with their corresponding holes. Press firmly around the perimeter until all clips are fully seated and the panel is flush. Replace any broken clips with new ones. Reinstall any other interior trim panels removed during wiring routing.
Reassembly
- Verify all trim panels are securely fastened with no gaps or loose clips
- Ensure all wiring is properly routed and secured to prevent interference with moving parts
- Check that tailgate opens and closes smoothly without binding on camera wiring
- Confirm camera lens is clean and unobstructed
Verification
- With engine running, shift transmission into reverse and verify backup camera image displays on screen within 2 seconds
- Check image quality for clarity, proper color, and correct orientation (not upside down or mirrored incorrectly)
- Verify parking guide lines appear correctly if equipped with dynamic or static guide lines
- Test camera function in various lighting conditions (daylight and low light) if possible
- Ensure no warning lights or error messages appear on the instrument cluster related to the camera system
- Open and close tailgate several times to verify wiring does not bind or create tension on connectors
- Visually inspect camera mounting to ensure it is secure and properly sealed against water intrusion
