Replace the oil pan gasket on a 2014 Ram 2500 with 6.7L Cummins diesel engine, requiring removal of the oil pan and proper resealing to prevent leaks.

Warnings

⚠️Vehicle must be properly supported on jack stands rated for the weight. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work. Hot oil can cause severe burns.
The oil pan is heavy when full of residual oil. Use caution when lowering to prevent injury or damage.
ℹ️This engine uses 5W-20 oil, NOT typical diesel 15W-40. Using incorrect oil will void warranty and cause engine damage.

Parts

  • Oil pan gasket kit × 1 — Use OEM Mopar gasket kit
  • Oil pickup tube O-ring × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Oil drain plug crush washer × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Engine oil filter × 1 — Mopar 68157291AA or equivalent

Fluids

  • Mopar 5W-20 Synthetic Blend — 13 qt

Preparation

  1. Ensure vehicle is on level ground and engine is completely cool
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable
  3. Raise vehicle and support securely on jack stands at all four corners
  4. Remove engine skid plate if equipped
  5. Place drain pan under oil pan drain plug
  6. Remove oil fill cap to aid draining

Procedure

  1. 1
    Drain engine oil
Remove the oil drain plug and allow all engine oil to drain completely into drain pan. This may take 15-20 minutes for complete drainage. Once drained, reinstall drain plug with new crush washer.
    Torque spec
    Oil Drain Plug35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove oil filter
Remove the oil filter using appropriate filter wrench. Position drain pan to catch residual oil from filter housing. Inspect filter mounting surface for damage or debris.
  3. 3
    Remove front axle support crossmember
For 4WD models, support the front axle with a transmission jack or suitable stand. Remove the mounting bolts securing the front axle crossmember to the frame. Carefully lower the crossmember enough to provide clearance for oil pan removal.
  4. 4
    Disconnect oil level sensor
Locate the oil level sensor on the side of the oil pan. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the sensor from the pan. Set aside for reinstallation.
  5. 5
    Remove oil pan bolts
Remove all oil pan mounting bolts working from the outside edges toward the center. There are approximately 20-24 bolts securing the pan. Keep bolts organized as some may be different lengths depending on location. Note bolt locations for reassembly.
Do not pry between the aluminum pan and engine block as this will damage sealing surfaces.
  6. 6
    Lower oil pan
Carefully tap the oil pan with a rubber mallet to break the gasket seal. Support the pan as it separates to prevent sudden dropping. Lower the pan carefully, tilting as needed to clear the oil pickup tube. Be prepared for residual oil to drain when pan is removed.
  7. 7
    Remove oil pickup tube
With the pan lowered, access the oil pickup tube mounting bolts from inside the pan. Remove the bolts securing the pickup tube to the engine block. Carefully remove the pickup tube and inspect the O-ring for damage or deterioration.
ℹ️The pickup tube O-ring must be replaced during reassembly to ensure proper seal and prevent air intrusion.
  8. 8
    Clean all sealing surfaces
Using a plastic gasket scraper, carefully remove all old gasket material from both the oil pan and engine block sealing surfaces. Do not use metal scrapers that can gouge aluminum surfaces. Clean thoroughly with brake cleaner and wipe dry with shop towels. Inspect surfaces for damage, warping, or cracks.
Ensure no gasket debris falls into the engine. Cover openings with clean shop towels during cleaning.
  9. 9
Install new pickup tube O-ring and reinstall tube
Install the new O-ring onto the oil pickup tube. Lightly lubricate the O-ring with clean engine oil. Insert the pickup tube into the engine block and align mounting holes. Install and torque the pickup tube bolts to specification.
  10. 10
    Install new oil pan gasket
Position the new oil pan gasket onto the engine block, ensuring all bolt holes align properly. Apply a small bead of RTV silicone at the front and rear main seal corners where the gasket meets the block (approximately 1/8 inch bead). Do not use excessive RTV as it can squeeze into oil passages.
ℹ️Some gaskets are adhesive-backed and will stick to the block. Follow gasket manufacturer instructions for installation.
  11. 11
    Install oil pan
Carefully raise the oil pan into position, tilting as necessary to clear the pickup tube. Align the pan with all bolt holes. Start all oil pan bolts by hand, ensuring threads engage properly. Do not force any bolts. Tighten bolts in a crisscross pattern from the center outward to specification.
    Torque spec
    Oil Pan Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reinstall oil level sensor
Install the oil level sensor into the oil pan with a new O-ring if provided in gasket kit. Torque to specification and reconnect the electrical connector.
  13. 13
    Reinstall front axle crossmember
Raise the front axle crossmember back into position. Install all mounting bolts and torque to specification. Remove the transmission jack or support stand.
  14. 14
Install new oil filter and refill oil
Install a new oil filter after lubricating the gasket with clean oil. Hand tighten only. Lower the vehicle to the ground. Refill the engine with 13 quarts of Mopar 5W-20 synthetic blend oil through the oil fill cap. Reinstall the oil fill cap.
Verify you are using 5W-20 oil, not conventional diesel oil. The 6.7L Cummins requires this specific viscosity.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine skid plate if equipped
  2. Reconnect negative battery cable
  3. Double-check that all fasteners have been properly torqued
  4. Verify drain plug is tight and not leaking

Verification

  • Start the engine and allow to idle for 2-3 minutes while monitoring for leaks around the oil pan gasket, drain plug, and oil filter
  • Shut off engine and wait 5 minutes for oil to settle
  • Check oil level on dipstick and add oil if necessary to bring to proper level
  • Inspect underneath vehicle for any signs of oil leakage
  • Test drive vehicle and recheck for leaks after reaching operating temperature
  • After 24 hours, recheck oil level and inspect again for any seepage from gasket
