Warnings

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch

  3. Raise vehicle to comfortable working height and support on jack stands at frame rails
  4. Remove engine oil drain plug and drain oil completely into appropriate container
  5. Remove front skid plate if equipped
  6. Remove both front wheels
  7. Mark front driveshaft orientation at front differential and transfer case for reassembly

    Install engine support
    Install an engine support fixture across the engine bay or attach a hoist to the engine lifting eyes. Apply slight upward tension to support engine weight but do not lift the engine yet. Verify support is secure before proceeding.

    Disconnect front driveshaft and axle components
    Remove the four bolts securing the front driveshaft to the front differential pinion flange. Secure driveshaft to frame with wire or zip ties. Disconnect the front axle vent tube. Disconnect both front brake line brackets from the axle housing. Support the front differential with a transmission jack.

    Disconnect steering linkage
    Remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the drag link at the steering knuckle on the passenger side. Use a pickle fork or tie rod separator to disconnect the drag link. Mark the track bar bolt orientation and remove the track bar from the axle bracket.
    Do not allow the steering linkage to hang unsupported as this can damage the steering box seal.

    Remove front shock absorbers
    Remove the lower mounting bolts from both front shock absorbers at the axle brackets. Allow shocks to hang from upper mounts. This provides clearance for axle removal.

    Support and remove front axle assembly
    Position a transmission jack or suitable axle support under the center of the front differential. Remove the four mounting bolts securing the front axle to the leaf spring mounting pads (two bolts per side). Carefully lower the front axle assembly and roll it out from under the vehicle. Have an assistant guide the assembly to prevent binding.
    ⚠️The front axle assembly weighs over 200 lbs. Ensure jack is rated for the weight and the axle is balanced on the jack.

    Remove oil filter and oil cooler lines
    Remove the oil filter and allow remaining oil to drain. Disconnect the oil cooler lines from the oil filter adapter if they interfere with oil pan removal. Cap or plug open lines to prevent contamination.

    Remove oil pan bolts
    Remove all oil pan bolts in a crisscross pattern starting from the outer edges and working toward the center. There are approximately 30 bolts securing the pan. Keep track of bolt locations as some may be different lengths.
    ℹ️Some bolts thread into the engine block while others thread into the transmission bellhousing. Note their locations.

    Remove oil pickup tube
    From inside the oil pan area, locate the oil pump pickup tube mounting bolts. Remove the bolts securing the pickup tube to the oil pump and lower the tube into the pan. The tube will be removed with the pan.

    Separate and remove oil pan
    Use a non-marring pry bar at the designated pry points (usually near the bellhousing end) to carefully break the gasket seal. Do not pry against machined sealing surfaces. Once free, lower the oil pan carefully, tilting as needed to clear the oil pickup tube and any other obstructions. Remove the oil pan from the vehicle.
    Residual oil will spill when pan is removed. Have drain pan positioned underneath.

    Clean all mating surfaces
    Thoroughly clean the oil pan gasket surface on the engine block and the oil pan using a plastic gasket scraper. Remove all old gasket material and RTV sealant. Clean surfaces with brake cleaner and allow to dry completely. Inspect the oil pan for cracks or damage, particularly around bolt holes.
    Do not use metal scrapers on the aluminum oil pan or engine block surfaces as gouges will cause leaks.

    Install new gasket and prepare oil pan
    Place the new oil pan gasket on the oil pan, ensuring all bolt holes align. Apply a small bead of RTV sealant at the engine block-to-timing cover joints and the engine block-to-rear seal retainer joints as specified in service manual. Install the oil pickup tube into the oil pan with new O-ring if equipped.

    Install oil pan
    Carefully raise the oil pan into position, aligning the pickup tube with the oil pump. Start all oil pan bolts by hand, ensuring gasket remains properly positioned. Do not tighten bolts yet.

    Torque oil pan and pickup tube
    First, torque the oil pump pickup tube bolts to specification. Then torque all oil pan bolts in the proper sequence: start at the center and work outward in a spiral pattern. Torque in three stages: first to 6 Nm, then to 9 Nm, and finally to 12 Nm. This ensures even gasket compression and prevents warpage.
    Over-torquing oil pan bolts will strip the aluminum threads. Use a calibrated torque wrench and follow sequence precisely.

    Reinstall front axle assembly
    Position the transmission jack under the front axle and roll it back under the vehicle. Raise the axle into position, aligning the spring mounting pads with the axle. Install all four mounting bolts and torque to specification. Reconnect lower shock mounts and torque mounting bolts.

    Reconnect steering and driveline components
    Reconnect the track bar to the axle bracket in the original orientation. Reconnect the drag link to the steering knuckle and install new cotter pin. Align the front driveshaft marks and install the four pinion flange bolts. Reconnect brake line brackets and axle vent tube. Reconnect oil cooler lines if removed.

Reassembly

  1. Install a new oil filter
  2. Install oil drain plug with new crush washer and torque to specification
  3. Reinstall front skid plate if equipped
  4. Reinstall front wheels and torque lug nuts to specification
  5. Remove engine support fixture or hoist
  6. Reconnect battery terminals, positive first
  7. Fill engine with 13 quarts of Mopar 5W-20 Synthetic Blend oil

Verification

  • Start engine and immediately check for oil leaks around the oil pan, paying special attention to corners and bolt areas
  • Allow engine to reach operating temperature and recheck for leaks
  • Verify oil pressure is normal on instrument cluster (should be 10+ PSI at idle when warm)
  • Shut off engine, wait 5 minutes, and verify oil level is at the full mark on dipstick
  • Test drive vehicle and verify steering operates normally with no unusual noises
  • After test drive, recheck oil pan for leaks with vehicle on level ground
