Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable

  4. Place drain pan under power steering pump area
  5. Take photo of serpentine belt routing for reference

    Remove serpentine belt
    Using a serpentine belt tool or breaker bar on the tensioner pulley, rotate the tensioner clockwise to release belt tension. Remove the serpentine belt from all pulleys, including the power steering pump pulley. Inspect belt for damage and replace if necessary.

    Disconnect power steering lines
    Place drain pan directly under power steering pump. Using appropriate line wrenches, disconnect the pressure line and return line from the power steering pump. Be prepared for fluid spillage. Cap or plug the lines and pump ports immediately to prevent contamination and further fluid loss. Discard old O-rings from the fittings.
    Power steering fluid will drain from lines and pump. Have adequate drain pan capacity and shop towels ready.

    Remove power steering pump mounting bolts
    Remove the three power steering pump mounting bolts using appropriate sockets. Support the pump while removing the final bolt. Carefully remove the pump from the mounting bracket and position it on a clean work surface where the pulley is accessible.

    Install the power steering pump pulley puller tool according to manufacturer instructions. The tool's center screw should press against the pump shaft while the puller arms grip behind the pulley. Gradually tighten the center screw to pull the pulley off the shaft. Do not use heat or impact tools as this will damage the pump.
    ⚠️Ensure the puller tool is properly seated and aligned. Misalignment can damage the pump shaft, requiring complete pump replacement.

    Inspect pump shaft and new pulley
    Inspect the pump shaft for scoring, damage, or debris. Clean the shaft with a clean shop towel. Verify the new pulley matches the old pulley dimensions and key slot alignment. Check that the pulley bore is clean and free of burrs.

    Install new power steering pump pulley
    Position the new pulley onto the pump shaft, aligning any key slots if present. Install the power steering pump pulley installer tool. The tool should press evenly on the pulley hub, not the outer fins. Gradually tighten the installer tool to press the pulley onto the shaft until it is fully seated and flush with the end of the shaft. The pulley should be pressed on until it reaches the same position as the original pulley (typically flush with or slightly recessed from shaft end).
    ⚠️Press only on the pulley hub, never on the pulley fins or outer edge. Pressing on fins will destroy the pulley. Stop immediately if resistance increases abnormally or alignment appears incorrect.

    Reinstall power steering pump
    Position the power steering pump with new pulley back into the mounting bracket. Thread in the three mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper alignment. Tighten the mounting bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern.

    Reinstall serpentine belt
    Route the serpentine belt according to the routing diagram (reference photo taken during disassembly or under-hood decal). Use belt tool to rotate tensioner and slip belt over final pulley. Verify belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves, paying special attention to the new power steering pump pulley.

    Fill and bleed power steering system
    Fill the power steering reservoir with Mopar ATF+4 to the proper level. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times with engine off to distribute fluid. Check fluid level and add as needed. Start engine and turn steering wheel lock-to-lock slowly several times while checking for leaks at pump connections. Check fluid level again and top off. Continue bleeding until no air bubbles appear in reservoir and steering operation is smooth.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all power steering line connections are tight and not leaking
  2. Confirm serpentine belt is properly routed and seated on all pulleys
  3. Double-check power steering fluid level in reservoir after test drive

Verification

  • Start engine and verify no unusual noises from power steering pump
  • Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock and verify smooth operation without noise or binding
  • Inspect all power steering connections for leaks with engine running
  • Test drive vehicle and verify normal power steering assist function
  • Recheck power steering fluid level after test drive and top off if necessary
  • Verify serpentine belt remains properly seated on new pulley during operation
