This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the sunroof motor assembly on a 2014 Ram 2500, including headliner access and electrical disconnection.

Warnings

Sunroof glass must be in the fully closed and tilted down position before beginning work to prevent damage
Do not force headliner down excessively as it may crease or damage the material permanently
ℹ️Have a second person assist with supporting headliner sections to prevent sagging and damage
⚠️Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes before working near airbag sensors or wiring

Parts

  • Sunroof motor assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Headliner clips (replacement set) × 1 — Assorted clips
  • Dielectric grease × 1 — Small tube

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Ensure sunroof is fully closed and in the fully tilted down position
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
  4. Remove both front sun visors by removing mounting screws
  5. Remove overhead console by carefully prying down and disconnecting all electrical connectors
  6. Remove both A-pillar trim panels by pulling firmly at base after releasing clips
  7. Remove front dome light assembly
  8. Note and photograph all electrical connector routing for reassembly reference

Procedure

  1. 1
    Lower headliner at sunroof area
Carefully pull down the front section of the headliner to expose the sunroof motor assembly area. The headliner is held by clips along the roof rail and does not need complete removal. Lower only enough to access the motor assembly, approximately 8-10 inches at the sunroof opening. Have an assistant support the headliner to prevent creasing.
  2. 2
    Remove sunroof drain tubes
Locate the four sunroof drain tubes at each corner of the sunroof cassette. Gently pull each drain tube straight down from its connection point at the sunroof frame. Mark or photograph their positions. These tubes route down the A and C-pillars to exit beneath the vehicle.
  3. 3
    Disconnect sunroof motor electrical connector
Locate the sunroof motor electrical connector on the driver side of the sunroof cassette assembly. Press the release tab and carefully disconnect the connector. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage. Clean contacts with contact cleaner if necessary.
  4. 4
    Remove motor module mounting bolts
Locate the three mounting bolts securing the sunroof motor module to the sunroof cassette frame. These are typically T25 Torx or 10mm hex head bolts. Remove all mounting bolts and place in magnetic tray. The motor is integrated into a control module assembly.

  5. 5
    Disconnect motor drive cable
The sunroof motor drives the glass panels via flexible cables. Locate where the drive cables connect to the motor gear assembly. Note the cable routing and orientation carefully. Disconnect the cables by removing the cable retaining clips and sliding cables out of motor drive mechanism. Mark cable positions if needed for correct reassembly.
  6. 6
    Remove sunroof motor assembly
With all connections and bolts removed, carefully extract the sunroof motor module from its mounting location. Maneuver it out through the headliner access area. Avoid contact with the headliner material during removal.
  7. 7
    Prepare new motor assembly
Unpack the new sunroof motor assembly and compare it to the removed unit to confirm correct replacement part. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector terminals on the new motor. Verify the motor gear mechanism rotates freely by hand without binding.
  8. 8
    Install new motor assembly
Position the new sunroof motor module into the mounting location on the sunroof cassette. Align mounting bolt holes carefully. Ensure no wiring is pinched between motor housing and cassette frame during installation.
  9. 9
    Install motor mounting bolts
Thread in all three motor module mounting bolts by hand first to ensure proper thread engagement. Tighten bolts in a star pattern to the specified torque. Verify motor assembly sits flush against mounting surface with no gaps.

    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect drive cables
Reconnect the sunroof drive cables to the motor gear assembly in their original positions as noted during disassembly. Ensure cables are fully seated in their drive mechanism slots. Install cable retaining clips securely. Verify cables move freely without binding when motor shaft is rotated by hand.
  11. 11
    Reconnect electrical connector
Connect the sunroof motor electrical connector, ensuring it clicks fully into place. Gently tug on connector to verify secure connection. Route wiring away from any moving sunroof components.
  12. 12
    Reinstall drain tubes
Push each of the four sunroof drain tubes firmly back onto their connection points at the corners of the sunroof cassette. Ensure each tube is fully seated. Pour a small amount of water into each drain channel to verify proper drainage through tubes.
  13. 13
    Test sunroof operation
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Without reinstalling headliner or trim, turn ignition to RUN position. Test sunroof operation in all modes: tilt up, tilt down, slide open, slide close. Listen for unusual noises and verify smooth operation throughout full range of motion. The sunroof should open and close evenly without binding.
  14. 14
    Perform sunroof initialization
If sunroof does not operate correctly or stops mid-travel, perform initialization procedure: Close sunroof completely, then press and hold the close button for 5 seconds after sunroof reaches fully closed position. This reprograms the sunroof control module for proper operation limits.

Reassembly

  1. Carefully guide headliner back into position, ensuring all edges seat properly in original clips
  2. Reinstall front dome light assembly and verify operation
  3. Reinstall overhead console, connecting all electrical connectors before pushing into place until clips engage
  4. Reinstall both A-pillar trim panels, starting at top and pressing firmly to engage all clips
  5. Reinstall both sun visors with mounting screws
  6. Verify all trim pieces are secure and properly aligned with no gaps

Verification

  • Test sunroof through complete cycle: fully closed, tilt up, tilt down, slide fully open, slide fully closed
  • Verify sunroof stops correctly at all limit positions without binding or unusual noises
  • Test one-touch open and close functions if equipped
  • Check for proper sunroof seal alignment with no visible gaps when closed
  • Test sunroof drain functionality by pouring water into drain channels and verifying proper drainage
  • Verify no interior lights or warnings remain illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Check that headliner and all trim pieces are properly seated with no rattles or loose sections
