Parts

  • Windshield wiper linkage assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Wiper arm removal tool (if arms need removal) × 1 — Optional rental tool

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes for system discharge
  3. Mark wiper blade rest positions on windshield with masking tape for reference
  4. Remove both wiper arms by lifting the arm away from windshield, removing the retaining nut cover, and removing the mounting nuts
  5. Open hood and secure in upright position

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove cowl cover assembly
Remove the plastic cowl cover screws along the rear edge of the hood opening. There are multiple screws securing the cowl panel. Carefully lift the cowl cover from the rear and disengage the clips along the windshield edge. Remove the cowl cover completely to expose the wiper motor and linkage assembly.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Disconnect wiper motor electrical connector
Locate the wiper motor electrical connector on the driver side of the assembly. Press the connector locking tab and pull the connector straight away from the motor. Ensure the connector is moved aside and will not interfere with linkage removal.
ℹ️Battery should already be disconnected, but verify no power is present before handling connector
  3. 3
    Remove wiper motor ground connection
Locate the ground wire attached to the wiper motor mounting bracket. Remove the ground bolt securing the ground wire to the motor assembly. Keep the ground wire and bolt for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Ground Bolt18 Nm (14 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Disconnect wiper motor from linkage
Locate the motor crank arm connection to the linkage. Remove the motor mounting bolts that secure the wiper motor to the linkage assembly bracket. There are typically three bolts securing the motor. Carefully separate the motor from the linkage, noting the orientation of the crank arm connection.
    Torque spec
    Motor Mounting Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove linkage pivot mounting hardware
Locate the pivot points where the linkage arms attach to the cowl structure. On each side (driver and passenger), remove the pivot nuts that secure the linkage pivot shafts to the mounting brackets. Support the linkage assembly as you remove the final fasteners.
Linkage may be under residual spring tension; control the assembly as fasteners are removed
    Torque spec
    Linkage Pivot Nuts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove primary linkage mounting bolts
Remove the main mounting bolts that secure the linkage assembly bracket to the vehicle structure. These are located at the mounting points along the cowl plenum area. Remove all mounting bolts while supporting the linkage assembly weight.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Extract wiper linkage assembly
Carefully maneuver the complete wiper linkage assembly out of the cowl area. The assembly may need to be rotated or angled to clear the hood hinge and other obstructions. Remove the assembly from the vehicle and set aside.
ℹ️Assembly is bulky; take care not to damage hood hinges, HVAC components, or windshield during removal
  8. 8
    Clean mounting surfaces
Use a wire brush to clean the pivot mounting points and bracket surfaces on the vehicle structure. Remove any corrosion, debris, or old thread locker from mounting holes. Ensure all mounting surfaces are clean and free from obstructions for proper new linkage installation.
  9. 9
    Install new linkage assembly
Position the new wiper linkage assembly into the cowl area, reversing the removal process. Align the pivot points with their respective mounting locations. Carefully maneuver the assembly to ensure proper positioning before installing any fasteners. Hand-start all mounting bolts and pivot nuts before tightening.
ℹ️Verify linkage arms move freely and are not binding before securing all fasteners
  10. 10
    Secure linkage mounting points
Install and torque all mounting bolts to specification. Begin with the primary mounting bolts that secure the bracket to the vehicle structure, followed by the pivot nuts at each linkage arm location. Torque in a progressive pattern to ensure even loading.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
    Linkage Pivot Nuts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reinstall wiper motor
Position the wiper motor to the linkage assembly, aligning the crank arm with the linkage connection point. Install the motor mounting bolts and torque to specification. Ensure the motor is properly seated against the mounting bracket before final tightening.
    Torque spec
    Motor Mounting Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect ground and electrical
Attach the ground wire to the motor mounting bracket and torque the ground bolt to specification. Reconnect the wiper motor electrical connector, ensuring it clicks fully into place and the locking tab engages.
    Torque spec
    Ground Bolt18 Nm (14 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    Reinstall cowl cover
Position the cowl cover over the linkage assembly, engaging the clips along the windshield edge first. Ensure the cover is properly seated along its entire length. Install all cowl cover screws and torque to specification.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  14. 14
    Reinstall wiper arms and test
Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition to ON position and cycle the wipers to the park position. Reinstall the wiper arms in their marked positions, ensuring the arms align with the tape marks on the windshield. Install and tighten the wiper arm mounting nuts securely.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all mounting bolts and fasteners are torqued to specification
  2. Ensure wiper arms are positioned correctly in their park position before securing mounting nuts
  3. Check that cowl cover is fully seated and all clips are engaged

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON and test wiper operation in all speeds (low, high, intermittent)
  • Verify wipers park correctly in the designated rest position
  • Check for unusual noise, binding, or hesitation during operation
  • Confirm wiper blades contact the windshield properly across their entire travel arc
  • Test washer system operation to ensure fluid sprays correctly while wipers function
  • Inspect cowl area for any water leaks during washer operation
