Parts

  • Rear wiper motor assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Wiper motor gasket/seal × 1 — Often included with motor

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Move rear wiper to parked position if not already there
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for electrical system discharge
  4. Open rear liftgate/tailgate for access to interior trim panels

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove rear wiper arm
Lift the wiper arm away from the glass. Remove the plastic cover at the base of the wiper arm. Use a 15mm socket to remove the wiper arm retaining nut. Mark the position of the wiper arm on the splined shaft for reinstallation reference. Carefully pull the wiper arm straight off the shaft using a rocking motion.
  2. 2
    Access interior trim panel
From inside the vehicle, locate the rear interior trim panel on the liftgate. This panel covers the wiper motor assembly. Use trim panel tools to carefully pry out any retaining clips around the perimeter of the panel. Remove any visible screws securing the trim panel.
  3. 3
Remove trim panel and access cover
Carefully pull the trim panel away from the liftgate to expose the wiper motor mounting area. If present, remove any secondary plastic cover or weather barrier to fully expose the wiper motor assembly and electrical connector.
  4. 4
    Disconnect wiper motor electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector attached to the rear wiper motor. Press the release tab on the connector and carefully pull it straight off the motor terminals. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or damage.
  5. 5
    Remove wiper motor mounting bolts
Locate the wiper motor mounting bolts securing the motor to the liftgate (typically 3-4 bolts). Use a 10mm socket with extension to remove all mounting bolts. Support the motor with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.

    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove wiper motor assembly
Carefully extract the wiper motor assembly from the liftgate opening. The motor shaft will come through the exterior mounting hole. Note the position of any gaskets or seals for proper reinstallation. Inspect the mounting surface and clean any debris or old gasket material.
  7. 7
Prepare and install new wiper motor
Transfer any necessary brackets or hardware from the old motor to the new motor if not included. Install new gasket or seal onto the new motor housing. Position the new wiper motor into the liftgate opening, ensuring the output shaft protrudes through the exterior hole and the motor sits flat against the mounting surface.
  8. 8
    Install mounting bolts
Thread all mounting bolts by hand first to ensure proper alignment. Using a torque wrench and 10mm socket, tighten the mounting bolts in a cross pattern to the specified torque value to ensure even seating and prevent gasket distortion.

  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Firmly push the electrical connector onto the wiper motor terminals until it clicks into place. Verify the connector lock is fully engaged. Give the connector a gentle tug to confirm secure attachment.
  10. 10
    Reinstall trim panels
Reinstall any weather barriers or secondary covers removed earlier. Position the interior trim panel back onto the liftgate and secure all retaining clips and screws. Ensure all clips are fully seated and the panel sits flush.
  11. 11
    Install wiper arm
Align the wiper arm with the reference mark made during removal. Slide the wiper arm onto the splined shaft in the parked position. Install the retaining nut and tighten securely. Reinstall the plastic cover at the base of the wiper arm.
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery and test
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten to specification. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Test all wiper functions including intermittent, low, high, and wash if equipped. Verify the wiper returns to the correct park position when turned off.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all trim panels are properly secured with no loose clips
  2. Verify wiper arm is positioned correctly in the parked position
  3. Check that the wiper blade does not contact the rear window trim during full sweep

Verification

  • Test rear wiper operation in all speed settings to confirm proper function
  • Verify wiper parks in the correct position at the bottom of the glass
  • Check for any water leaks around the motor mounting area after testing
  • Confirm no rattles or unusual noises from the motor or trim panels
  • Spray washer fluid if equipped and verify wiper wipes properly
