Trunk/Liftgate Actuator

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the rear trunk/liftgate actuator on a 2023 Rivian EDV 500 commercial delivery van, including trim removal and electrical disconnection.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
2. Ensure liftgate is fully closed before beginning work
3. Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery using battery disconnect procedure (located in front cabin area behind driver's side trim)
4. Wait minimum 5 minutes after battery disconnection for capacitor discharge
5. Gather all required tools and replacement actuator
6. Open liftgate manually using emergency release procedure (consult owner's manual for EDV-specific location)
7. Position work light to illuminate interior liftgate trim area

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove lower liftgate interior trim panel
   Use trim panel tools to carefully pry out the lower interior trim panel starting from the bottom corners. Remove 4 push-pin fasteners along the bottom edge and 2 Torx T20 screws near the latch area. Gently pull the panel away from the liftgate, working around the perimeter. Note the location of any wiring harness routing clips attached to the panel.

   Disconnect actuator electrical connector
   Locate the actuator electrical connector on the driver's side of the liftgate. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight back to disconnect. Use electrical connector release tool if needed. Mark connector orientation with tape to aid reassembly.

   Support liftgate weight
   Have an assistant hold the liftgate in the open position, or install a suitable prop rod to support the full weight of the liftgate. The actuator provides both power assist and holding force - removing it without support will cause the liftgate to drop suddenly.
   ⚠️Never work under an unsupported liftgate. The liftgate weighs approximately 80-100 lbs and can cause crushing injuries if it falls.

   Remove upper actuator mounting fasteners
   Locate the upper actuator mounting bracket attached to the liftgate structure. Remove the two 13mm bolts securing the actuator upper mount. Do not allow the actuator to hang by the lower mount - support it by hand.

   Remove lower actuator mounting fasteners
   Access the lower actuator mounting point on the body panel below the liftgate opening. Remove the two 13mm bolts securing the lower ball socket mount. Carefully extract the actuator assembly from the mounting area.

   Inspect mounting points and brackets
   Examine both upper and lower mounting points for cracks, damage, or excessive wear. Check mounting bracket bolts for thread damage. Inspect the ball socket connections on both ends of the actuator mounting area for wear or distortion. Replace any damaged hardware before installing new actuator.

   Install new actuator lower mount
   Position the new actuator with the lower ball socket aligned to the body mounting point. Install and hand-tighten the two 13mm bolts at the lower mount. Do not fully tighten yet - leave some movement for alignment of the upper mount.

   Install actuator upper mount
   While supporting the liftgate, align the upper actuator mounting bracket to the liftgate structure. Install the two 13mm bolts at the upper mount and hand-tighten. Verify the actuator moves smoothly through its full range without binding.

   Tighten all actuator mounting fasteners
   Tighten the lower mount 13mm bolts first, ensuring the ball socket is properly seated. Then tighten the upper mount 13mm bolts. Since specific torque specifications are not available in the database, tighten fasteners firmly using hand tools (not impact tools) until snug, approximately 20-25 ft-lbs equivalent feel. Do not over-tighten as this can distort mounting brackets.

    Reconnect electrical connector
    Connect the actuator electrical connector, ensuring it clicks fully into place with the locking tab engaged. Verify connector is secure by gently tugging on the connection. Route wiring through original clips to prevent interference with liftgate operation.

    Reinstall interior trim panel
    Align the interior trim panel with the liftgate structure, ensuring all wiring harness clips are properly routed behind the panel. Install the 2 Torx T20 screws near the latch area first, then press the panel into place around the perimeter to engage the 4 push-pin fasteners. Verify all clips are fully seated.

    Reconnect 12V battery
    Reconnect the 12V auxiliary battery. The vehicle may display various warning messages on first power-up, which is normal after battery disconnection.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
2. Verify all trim panels are securely fastened with no gaps or rattles
3. Confirm no tools or parts were left in the liftgate cavity
4. Check that wiring harnesses are properly routed and secured away from moving components

Verification

• Use the key fob or interior button to cycle the liftgate through 3 complete open/close cycles, listening for unusual noises
• Verify the liftgate opens smoothly to full height without hesitation or jerking
• Confirm the liftgate holds position at various points when stopped mid-travel
• Test the liftgate closes fully and latches securely without requiring manual assistance
• Verify the liftgate obstruction detection functions by placing a soft object in the closing path
• Check that all liftgate position sensors and courtesy lights function properly
• Perform Rivian diagnostic system check if available to verify no fault codes are present
• Test manual emergency release function to ensure it still operates correctly
