Removal and reinstallation of a front or rear interior door panel (door card) on a 2024 Model 3 Long Range. The Model 3 door card is held by hidden perimeter clips plus screws behind the interior door pull and requires disconnecting the window switch and tweeter/courtesy light harnesses before lifting the panel off the belt line.

Warnings

Door card clips are one-time-use friendly only — pulling at the wrong angle will snap the plastic studs off the door card itself, not just the clips. Always pry directly outward (perpendicular to the door skin) at each clip location.
The window switch pack and tweeter/ambient light harness are short. Do not let the panel hang — it will tear the connectors out.
ℹ️Lower the window approximately halfway BEFORE disconnecting the 12V battery. This makes lifting the door card off the belt-line weatherstrip dramatically easier and prevents bending the inner glass run.
Model 3 uses an aluminum/steel hybrid door structure. Do not strike the door frame with a hammer or use metal pry tools against the painted edge.

Parts

  • Replacement door panel push-pin clips (white nylon, door-card style) × 8 — Tesla Model 3 door panel retainer clips — replace any that broke on removal
  • Door panel moisture/vapor barrier butyl sealant × 1 — Generic black butyl rope sealant — only if vapor barrier was disturbed

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place the vehicle in P, and engage the parking brake from the touchscreen.
  2. Lower the affected door's window approximately halfway to provide clearance when lifting the panel up and off the belt line.
  3. Exit ALL doors with the key fob/phone key carried away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for low-voltage and HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  4. Open the right rear seat back access panel and disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery negative terminal (2024 Model 3 Long Range — verify whether your specific build uses the AGM or Li-ion 12V; both are located behind the right rear seat back panel on this model year).
  5. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable. If you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Lay a clean moving blanket or microfiber on the seat to receive the door panel face-down without scratching the soft-touch surface.
  7. Have replacement white nylon door-card retainer clips on hand before starting — assume at least 2–3 will need replacement.

Procedure

  1. 1
Pre-removal failure-mode check (if replacing the panel due to a fault)
If you are here because the window switch, interior door release button, or courtesy light is non-functional: before removing the panel, sit in the seat and confirm the failure with the door closed and the 12V still connected. Verify the touchscreen does not show a door ajar fault, and confirm the opposite-side switches behave normally. This narrows the failure to the switch pack vs. the harness vs. the door control module — only the switch pack is serviceable from inside the door card. Once confirmed, proceed with the 12V disconnect described in preparation.
  2. 2
Release the interior door pull cup trim
Inside the recessed door pull (the horizontal grab handle cavity), at the forward end of the cup, insert a narrow plastic pick into the small slot and pry the trim insert upward and toward the rear of the vehicle. The insert is held by two integrated tabs. Lift it out to expose two T20 Torx screws underneath.
  3. 3
    Remove the door pull screws
Using a T20 Torx driver, remove the two screws located in the bottom of the door pull cup (now exposed). These are the only visible fasteners on the entire door card. Place them in a parts tray.

  4. 4
Release the lower and forward perimeter clips
Starting at the bottom-front corner of the door panel, insert a wide nylon trim wedge between the door card and the painted door skin. Apply protective painter's tape along the door skin edge first. Pry straight outward (perpendicular to the door) in firm, controlled pulls — you will feel and hear each white nylon push-pin clip release. Work along the bottom edge from front to rear, then up the rear vertical edge. There are approximately 8 perimeter clips.
Pry as close to each clip as possible. Prying between clips flexes the door card and snaps the plastic clip stud off the panel itself, which is not repairable without adhesive.
  5. 5
Lift the panel up and off the belt-line weatherstrip
With all perimeter clips released, grasp the door card at the armrest and lift the entire panel straight UP. The top edge of the panel hooks over the inner belt-line weatherstrip (the felt-lined seal that wipes the glass). The panel will rise approximately 25–30 mm before clearing the hooks. Do not pull outward yet — lift first, then tilt.
  6. 6
Support the panel and access the harness connectors
Once the top edge clears the belt line, tilt the bottom of the panel out approximately 100 mm and support it with one hand or rest it on your knee. Do NOT let it hang. On the back side of the panel you will find: (a) the window switch pack connector at the armrest, (b) the interior door release / courtesy light harness near the front upper corner, and (c) on rear doors only, a shorter window switch harness.
  7. 7
    Disconnect the window switch pack
Press the release tab on the window switch connector (squeeze the locking lever toward the connector body) and pull the connector straight off the switch pack. The connector is keyed and only goes on one way.
  8. 8
Disconnect the door release / courtesy light harness
Locate the smaller connector feeding the electronic interior door release button and the courtesy/puddle light at the upper forward corner of the panel. Depress the locking tab and separate the connector. On 2024 Model 3, the interior door release is electronic — confirm the small two-wire (or three-wire on some builds) connector is fully released before pulling the panel away.
ℹ️The mechanical emergency door release cable (front doors only) is integrated into the panel's lower-forward area on some builds. If present, unhook it from its retaining clip before fully removing the panel.
  9. 9
Remove the panel from the vehicle
With all connectors free, lift the panel off the door and place it face-down on the prepared blanket on the seat. Inspect the back side of the panel: count the white nylon clips remaining in the panel vs. the clips that stayed in the door skin. Any clip stuck in the door skin must be removed (squeeze the legs together with pliers and push it back out the visible side) and reinstalled into the door card before reassembly.
  10. 10
    Inspect the vapor barrier
Behind the door card is a black plastic vapor/acoustic barrier sealed to the door with butyl rope. If your service inside the door requires removing it (speaker, regulator, latch), peel it back carefully — the butyl is reusable if kept clean. If you are only servicing the door card itself, leave the vapor barrier intact.
A torn or improperly resealed vapor barrier will cause water intrusion into the cabin and wind noise at highway speed. Replace the butyl if it has picked up dirt.

Reassembly

  1. Inspect every white nylon retainer clip. Replace any that are cracked, distorted, or that lost their barbs during removal — these are inexpensive and reusing damaged clips guarantees a rattle.
  2. If the vapor barrier was disturbed, press it firmly back into the butyl rope with no gaps or wrinkles. Add fresh butyl to any section that has lost tack.
  3. Position the door card at the door, reconnect the door release / courtesy light connector first (it is the hardest to reach with the panel partially seated), then the window switch pack. Listen for an audible click on each connector.
  4. If equipped, reattach the mechanical emergency door release cable to its retaining clip on the back of the panel.
  5. Lift the panel and hook its top edge over the inner belt-line weatherstrip. Verify the top edge is fully seated along the entire length of the window opening before pressing the perimeter clips home.
  6. Align each perimeter clip with its hole in the door skin and press firmly with the heel of your hand directly over each clip location until you feel it snap in. Work from top-rear, around the bottom, to the front.
  7. Reinstall the two door pull screws and torque to specification.
  8. Reinstall the door pull cup trim insert by hooking its rear tabs and pressing the front edge down until it snaps flush.
  9. Reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery negative terminal behind the right rear seat back panel and reinstall the access cover.

Verification

  • Close the door gently and verify even gap between the panel and the dash, the B-pillar trim, and the lower sill — no high spots indicating a missed clip.
  • Press firmly along the entire perimeter of the panel and listen/feel for any clip that did not seat (it will pop in now).
  • With the 12V reconnected and the vehicle awake, cycle the window fully down and fully up using the door's own switch. Confirm one-touch auto-up and auto-down both work and that the window re-learns its end stops if it hesitates (hold up at the top stop for 2 seconds).
  • Operate the electronic interior door release button — the door should unlatch with a single press.
  • Confirm the courtesy light at the bottom of the panel illuminates when the door opens.
  • Check the touchscreen for any door, window, or BCM-related alerts.
  • Drive at 65+ mph with the radio off and listen for new wind noise (indicates vapor barrier or belt-line seating issue) or rattles (indicates an unseated clip or pinched harness).
  • Door panel service does not reset any Tesla maintenance interval, but while the 12V is disconnected it is a good time to note: brake fluid is on a 2-year interval and cabin air filter is on a 2-year interval on this Model 3 — check service history.
