Replacement of an interior door handle (door pull/release trim) on a 2024 Model S Long Range. The interior handle on refresh Model S is a capacitive electronic release integrated into the door card trim — there is no mechanical cable pull on the primary release, so the door panel must be removed to access the handle assembly.
Warnings
⚠️Refresh Model S doors use electronic releases. With the 12V disconnected the manual mechanical backup release (small lever near the window switches/door pocket) is the only way to exit if a door closes. Work with the door open and propped.
⚠Aluminum body — do not pry against the painted door skin or strike any panel with a hammer. Aluminum dents permanently and is not field-repairable like steel.
⚠The door card contains the window switch harness, ambient lighting, speaker, and tweeter connectors. Disconnect each connector individually; do not let the door card hang by the wiring.
ℹ️Capacitive/electronic handle requires a calibration or relearn after replacement on some builds — verify operation of both primary release and mechanical backup before considering the job complete.
Tools required
Plastic trim removal pry tool set (nylon)Essential
Torx bit set (T20/T25/T30)Essential
1/4" drive torque wrench (2–25 Nm range)Essential
10mm socket
Painter's tape (to protect door card edges)
Small flashlight
Parts
- Interior door handle / release assembly (door-specific, left or right) × 1 — Tesla OEM interior handle assembly — verify by VIN and door position
- Replacement plastic retaining clips for door card (as needed) × 1 — Generic door panel push-pin clips matching factory size
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place in P, engage the parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery in the front trunk (under the nose cowl panel). If the vehicle is equipped with a 16V Li-ion accessory battery, follow that disconnect procedure instead.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- Open the affected door fully and prop it. Confirm you know where the mechanical backup release is on that door before disconnecting 12V — once 12V is disconnected, the electronic release will not function.
- Lower the window slightly before disconnecting 12V if access behind the belt-line is needed (optional).
- Lay out clean towels or a fender mat on the seat and door sill to set the door card on after removal.
- Confirm the replacement handle matches door side (driver/passenger) and front/rear position.
Procedure
- 1Remove door card trim caps and fastenersUsing a nylon pry tool, gently lift the trim caps that conceal the door card retaining screws (typically located behind the interior pull/armrest area and along the lower edge). Remove the exposed Torx screws and set them aside, labeled by location.⚠Pry only against plastic-to-plastic seams — never against painted aluminum.
- 2Release the door card from the door shellStarting at a lower corner, work the nylon pry tool around the perimeter of the door card to release the push-pin clips. Lift the card upward off the belt-line clip rail. Expect some clips to remain in the door shell — extract and reuse, or replace any that are broken.
- 3Disconnect door card harness connectorsTilt the door card outward and support it. Disconnect each electrical connector: window switch pack, ambient/courtesy lighting, speaker (and tweeter if separate), and the interior handle/release connector. Press the locking tab on each connector — do not pull by the wires.⚠Some connectors have fragile latches; inspect for cracks before reuse.
- 4Set the door card on a protected surfaceMove the door card to a clean towel-covered surface, finished side up. Inspect the back side to identify the interior handle/release assembly mounting points.
- 5Remove the interior handle assemblyRemove the fasteners securing the interior handle / electronic release assembly to the door card. Carefully release any plastic retention tabs and lift the assembly out. Note the orientation of any harness routing or grounding clips.Torque specHandle Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 6Transfer any reusable hardware to the new handleCompare the new handle assembly to the original. Transfer any brackets, foam gaskets, or harness clips that are not included with the replacement.
- 7Install the new interior handle assemblyPosition the new handle assembly into the door card. Start all fasteners by hand to avoid cross-threading the plastic bosses, then snug evenly. Final-torque to specification.⚠Plastic bosses strip easily — do not exceed the specified torque.Torque specHandle Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 8Reseat any internal cable clips or sensor bracketsIf the handle assembly includes a tethered backup-release cable clip or a capacitive sensor bracket, secure these to their factory locations. Torque any sensor or bracket fasteners to specification.Torque specCable Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)Sensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Reconnect each door card harness connector, listening for the latch click on each one.
- Inspect all door card clips; replace any broken push-pins before reinstallation.
- Align the door card to the belt-line clip rail first, then press the perimeter clips home with palm pressure — do not strike with a fist or mallet.
- Reinstall the Torx screws behind the trim caps and snug evenly. These are plastic-threaded — refer to Tesla Service Manual for exact torque; do not overtighten.
- Reinstall trim caps and confirm they sit flush.
- Reconnect the 12V (or 16V) low-voltage battery in the frunk. Torque the battery terminal hardware to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.
- Close the frunk and allow the vehicle 1–2 minutes to wake and re-initialize before testing.
Verification
- With the door closed from outside, press the new interior electronic release — the door should unlatch and present (or pop ajar) normally.
- Operate the mechanical backup release on the same door and confirm it still unlatches — this is a safety-critical function.
- Cycle the window switches on the repaired door (auto up/down, and the other doors from the master switch if on the driver's door) to confirm the harness is correctly seated.
- Verify the door speaker and any ambient lighting on that door function.
- Check the touchscreen for any door-related alerts or 'service required' messages and clear by cycling the door if needed.
- Inspect the door card seam for even gaps along the entire perimeter — uneven gaps indicate a missed clip.
- While the interior is open, this is a good opportunity to note Tesla's 2-year cabin air filter interval (3 years if equipped with HEPA / Bioweapon Defense Mode) and 2-year brake fluid service interval if either are due.
