Removal and reinstallation of a front door interior trim panel (door card) on a 2024 Model S Long Range. The procedure covers releasing the upper trim, freeing the perimeter clips, and disconnecting the window switch and tweeter harnesses without cracking the panel.
Warnings
⚠️The Model S door contains a side-impact airbag and seat-belt pretensioner harness running through the door area. Disconnect the 12V battery and wait at least 2 minutes before disturbing any yellow SRS connectors.
⚠Aluminum body — do not pry against the painted door shell with metal tools. Use plastic trim tools only and pad the leading edge of the door.
⚠The door card on the 2024 Model S has hidden upper retainers along the beltline. Do NOT yank the panel outward from the bottom first — you will crack the upper hook trim.
ℹ️Soft-close door actuator wiring (if equipped) routes through the door cavity. Avoid pinching it during reinstallation.

Parts
- Door panel retaining clips (replace any that deform on removal) × 4 — Tesla Model S door card push-pin clip
- Door vapor barrier butyl sealant (only if foam/membrane is disturbed) × 1 — Generic butyl rope sealant
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with the key fob at least 3 m away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for low-voltage and SRS systems to fully de-energize.
- Open the frunk, remove the nose cowl/apron panel, and disconnect the 12V (or 16V Li-ion on Plaid) low-voltage battery negative terminal. Tape the terminal back so it cannot spring into contact.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable. None should be present in the door, but if you encounter one, STOP.
- Lower the window fully BEFORE disconnecting the 12V battery — this gives clearance to the inner belt seal during panel removal.
- Open the door fully and support it on a door stand or pad to prevent hinge sag while you work.
- Lay a soft blanket on the seat and sill to receive the panel.
Procedure
- 1Diagnostic check before disassemblyIf you are removing the panel to chase a rattle, inoperative window switch, or non-presenting door handle: cycle the window switch and listen at the door before teardown. For door handle no-present, confirm in the touchscreen Service menu that the handle is commanded to present — if it commands but the handle stays flush, the issue is the presenting motor inside the door (accessed after panel removal). If it does not command, the issue is upstream and panel removal will not help.
- 2Remove the interior door pull/switch pod bezelStarting at the rear edge of the upper switch pod (the trim ring around the window switches and door release button), insert a wide plastic trim tool and gently lift upward. The bezel is retained by metal spring clips along its perimeter. Work from rear to front, releasing each clip with a steady upward pull. Lift the bezel just enough to access the connectors underneath — do not yank it free.⚠The electronic door release button is wired. Pulling the bezel hard will rip the connector.
- 3Disconnect switch pod harnessesWith the bezel lifted, depress the lock tab on each connector and unplug: the master/passenger window switch connector, the electronic door release switch connector, and the mirror adjust/memory switch connector (driver door only). Set the bezel aside on the blanket.
- 4Remove the hidden fastener behind the pull cupInside the pull-handle cup at the bottom of the recess, remove the trim plug with a pick to expose the retaining screw. Remove this screw with a T20 Torx driver. There is typically one screw here on the Model S front door.Torque specDoor Panel Screws2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 5Remove any lower edge fastenersInspect the lower forward and lower rear corners of the door card for any additional T20 screws hidden behind plugs. Remove if present. Do not over-pry the lower edge before all visible fasteners are out.Torque specDoor Panel Screws2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 6Release the perimeter push-pin clipsUsing a forked plastic trim tool, work along the bottom edge of the door card first. Insert the fork directly behind each clip (you can feel them by tapping along the edge — they sit roughly every 150–200 mm). Pull straight outward, perpendicular to the door, to pop each clip cleanly. Continue up the front (hinge side) edge, then up the rear (latch side) edge. Do not twist the panel — twisting snaps the clip stems off inside the door shell.⚠If a clip stays in the door shell instead of in the panel, retrieve it before reinstall — a loose clip in the door cavity will rattle forever.
- 7Lift the panel off the upper beltline hookOnce the perimeter clips are free, lift the entire door card straight UP about 25–40 mm. The top edge of the panel hooks over the inner beltline trim — it does not pull outward, it lifts off. Once unhooked, tilt the top of the panel away from the door to expose the back side.
- 8Disconnect remaining harnesses and cablesWith the panel tilted, disconnect: the tweeter speaker connector (top forward corner), the door courtesy/puddle lamp connector if present at the lower edge, and any ambient lighting harness routed across the back of the panel. If a mechanical inner cable release is present, unclip the cable housing and disengage the cable end from the latch lever (note orientation before removal).ℹ️The 2024 Model S uses an electronic door release as primary, with a mechanical emergency release. Verify the emergency release cable is reseated correctly during reassembly — a misrouted cable can leave occupants unable to exit.
- 9Remove the door cardLift the panel free of the door and place it face-down on the padded blanket. Inspect the back side for broken clip towers, torn foam, or loose wiring P-clips. Replace any clip that pulled out of the panel or that has a deformed barb.Torque specTrim Panel Clips2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 10Inspect the vapor barrierBehind the door card is a foam/film vapor barrier sealed to the door inner with butyl rope. If you need to access the window regulator, speaker, presenting handle motor, or latch, peel the barrier back carefully — do not tear it. If torn, plan to replace the butyl seal on reassembly. A compromised vapor barrier causes water intrusion into the cabin.⚠Water leaking past a damaged vapor barrier pools at the rocker and can reach low-voltage harness connectors. Do not skip resealing.
Reassembly
- Reinstall or replace any damaged perimeter clips into the panel (not into the door shell) so they seat correctly when the panel is pressed home.
- If the vapor barrier was disturbed, lay fresh butyl rope along the original sealing path and press the film firmly back into place. Confirm no wiring is pinched under the seal.
- Reconnect the tweeter, courtesy lamp, and any ambient lighting harnesses. Reattach the mechanical emergency release cable and verify its routing matches the original — the cable must not be kinked or under tension.
- Hook the top edge of the door card over the beltline trim first, then lower it straight down until it seats. Verify the upper edge is fully captured along its length before pressing the perimeter.
- Press the perimeter clips home with palm pressure directly over each clip location — do not strike with a fist on the painted aluminum door. Listen for each clip to click.
- Reinstall the hidden screw inside the pull cup. Torque to spec.
- Reconnect the window switch, door release, and mirror switch connectors, then press the switch pod bezel back into place until all spring clips engage.
- Reinstall the trim plug in the pull cup.
- Reconnect the 12V (or 16V) low-voltage battery negative terminal and reinstall the frunk nose cowl.
Verification
- With the door closed, run the window fully up and down using the switch — confirm no buzzing or interference from the panel.
- Press the electronic door release from inside — confirm the door unlatches and opens normally. Test the mechanical emergency release as well; it must operate the latch with a clean pull.
- Test the exterior door handle present/retract function from the key fob and from approach detection (driver door). The handle must present and retract smoothly with no grinding.
- Run audio with bass content and confirm the tweeter is functional and the door card has no rattle. Drive over a rough surface and listen for a tick from the lower edge — a tick usually indicates a missed clip.
- Confirm courtesy lighting and ambient lighting (if equipped) function with the door open and at night.
- Spray a light water test along the upper window seal and inspect inside the door card area after 10 minutes — no water should reach the cabin side of the vapor barrier.
- Check the touchscreen for any new alerts related to door switches, window pinch sensors, or handle module after the 12V reconnect.
