Replace the windshield washer fluid pump on a 2024 Tesla Model S Long Range AWD. The pump is mounted on the side of the washer fluid reservoir, accessible from the front wheel well after removing the wheel liner.

Warnings

The Model S has aluminum body panels and plastic wheel liners — do not pry aggressively on painted surfaces or strike with a hammer. Aluminum dents and creases easily.
The washer reservoir may contain up to 3.5 qt of fluid. Have a drain pan ready before disconnecting the pump or fluid will spill into the wheel well and onto the floor.
ℹ️Use only proper windshield washer fluid. Do not use plain water (freezes and grows biofilm) or RV antifreeze (damages seals and clogs nozzles).
The pump is a press-fit into a rubber grommet. Pull straight out — twisting or prying with metal tools can tear the grommet and cause a leak.

Parts

  • Windshield washer fluid pump × 1 — OEM Tesla Model S (2021+ refresh) washer pump assembly
  • Washer pump grommet/seal × 1 — Replace if torn or hardened — OEM rubber grommet

Fluids

  • Windshield Washer Fluid — 3.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery, located in the front trunk (frunk) under the nose cowl panel. (2024 Model S typically uses a 16V Li-ion unit — verify location before disconnecting.)
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Chock the rear wheels. Loosen the front passenger-side wheel lug nuts while the vehicle is on the ground.
  7. Raise the front of the vehicle using the manufacturer-specified jack pad locations and support on jack stands. Remove the front passenger-side wheel.
  8. Have a drain pan and shop towels positioned under the wheel well before disturbing the pump.

Procedure

  1. 1
Access the washer pump via the wheel well
With the front passenger wheel removed, locate the front section of the inner wheel liner. The washer fluid reservoir sits behind this liner on the passenger side of the Model S. Remove the push-pin retainers and Torx fasteners securing the front portion of the wheel liner using a plastic trim tool and T20 Torx driver. Pull the liner back gently — it does not need to be fully removed, only flexed enough to access the pump.
Plastic push-pins become brittle with age — work slowly and have spares available if any break.
  2. 2
Identify and inspect the washer pump
Locate the washer pump on the lower side of the reservoir. It is a small cylindrical electric pump with a two-wire electrical connector and one or two outlet hoses (windshield and, on some configurations, headlight washers). Confirm pump location and orientation before disconnecting anything.
  3. 3
    Disconnect the electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the pump's electrical connector and pull straight off. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or fluid intrusion — a leaking grommet often pushes fluid into the connector and damages it.
  4. 4
    Disconnect the washer fluid hose(s)
Position the drain pan directly under the pump. Carefully detach the outlet hose(s) from the pump barbs by squeezing the retainer clip (if equipped) or gently working the hose off. Fluid will begin to flow — allow the reservoir to drain into the pan as needed, or pinch the hose with a clamp to control flow.
Washer fluid contains methanol and surfactants — avoid skin and eye contact, do not allow to drip onto brake rotors or HV cabling routed nearby.
  5. 5
Remove the pump from the reservoir
Grasp the pump body and pull straight outward to extract it from the rubber grommet seated in the reservoir wall. Expect residual fluid to drain from the grommet opening. Inspect the grommet — if it is torn, hardened, or distorted, replace it before installing the new pump.
Do not pry with a screwdriver against the reservoir — the reservoir is plastic and will crack.
  6. 6
    Install the new washer pump
Lubricate the new pump's inlet stem lightly with fresh washer fluid (do not use grease or oil — they will degrade the rubber). Press the pump straight into the grommet until it is fully seated. The pump should feel firmly captured with no rocking.
  7. 7
    Reconnect hose(s) and electrical connector
Reattach the outlet hose(s) to the pump barbs, ensuring any retainer clips fully click into place. Reconnect the electrical connector until you hear/feel the locking tab engage.

Reassembly

  1. Reposition the wheel liner and reinstall all push-pin retainers and Torx fasteners. Confirm the liner is fully seated — a loose liner will flap at highway speed and can contact the tire.
  2. Reinstall the front passenger wheel. Snug the lug nuts in a star pattern by hand.
  3. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  4. Final-torque the wheel lug nuts to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.
  5. Refill the washer reservoir with fresh windshield washer fluid (capacity approx. 3.5 qt).
  6. Reconnect the 12V/16V low-voltage battery in the frunk. Torque battery terminal hardware per spec.
  7. Close the frunk and reinstall the nose cowl panel.

Verification

  • With the vehicle powered on, use the left scroll wheel or touchscreen Controls > Service menu (where available) to activate the windshield washers. Confirm fluid sprays evenly from both windshield nozzles.
  • If equipped with headlight washers, trigger them via the touchscreen and confirm operation.
  • Inspect the pump and grommet area in the wheel well for any leaks after running the pump 3–4 times.
  • Check the windshield wiper sweep cleans the fluid fully — if streaking, this is a wiper issue, not a pump issue.
  • Confirm no fault messages appear on the touchscreen for the washer system.
  • Note: Tesla recommends inspecting the cabin air filter every 2 years (3 years for HEPA-equipped models). While the wheel is off and you have access, this is a good time to also verify tire rotation interval — Tesla recommends every 6,250 mi on the Model S due to instant torque and vehicle weight.
