Replacement of the cabin HVAC blower motor on a 2024 Tesla Model S Plaid. The blower is accessed from under the passenger-side dashboard; no HV system interaction is required for this job.

Warnings

⚠️DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce any orange cable. The HV pack is under the cabin floor — keep tools clear of any orange-jacketed harness even though this job is in the dash.
Aluminum body construction — do not pry against painted aluminum panels with metal tools and do not strike trim with a hammer. Use plastic pry tools only.
The 2024 Plaid uses a low-voltage lithium battery (16V class) in some configurations. Confirm the LV system is fully disconnected before reaching deep into the dash to avoid shorting blower power wiring.
ℹ️Cabin air filters are due every 2 years (every 3 years for HEPA / Bioweapon Defense). While the blower is exposed, replace the filters to avoid duplicating disassembly later.
ℹ️The Model S blower motor is mounted high under the passenger footwell — working position is awkward. Plan for back/neck strain, not torque effort.

Tools required

Trim panel removal tool set (plastic pry tools)Essential
Torx bit set (T20-T30)Essential
1/4" drive ratchet with metric socket setEssential
Calibrated torque wrench (2-30 Nm range)Essential
Insulated gloves (for 12V disconnect)
Headlamp or work lightEssential
Soft kneeling pad / floor mat protector

Parts

  • HVAC blower motor assembly (Model S Plaid 2024) × 1 — Manufacturer-specified Model S refresh blower assembly — verify by VIN
  • Cabin air filter set (recommended replacement while in this area) × 1 — Model S refresh dual cabin filter kit (HEPA if equipped)

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place the vehicle in P, and engage the parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob carried well away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the low-voltage battery: open the frunk, remove the nose cowl/access panel, and disconnect the negative terminal of the 12V (or 16V lithium, if equipped) battery. Some 2021+ Plaid units locate the lithium LV battery under the rear seat — verify by VIN before opening the frunk.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Move the passenger seat fully rearward and recline the seatback for working room.
  7. Open the passenger door, remove the passenger floor mat, and lay down a clean protective surface to lie/kneel on.
  8. Confirm climate system is OFF before LV disconnect to avoid leaving the blower commanded ON when power is restored.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Confirm LV disconnect
After disconnecting the LV battery negative, wait 2 minutes, then verify the touchscreen is fully off and interior lights do not respond to door actuation. This confirms the blower circuit is de-energized.
  2. 2
    Remove passenger-side lower dash trim
From the passenger footwell, release the lower dash close-out panel using a plastic pry tool. The panel is held by clips and may have one or two fasteners at the rearward edge. Disconnect any courtesy lamp or trim-mounted sensor connector before fully removing the panel.
Pull clips straight out — angled prying will crack the painted/soft-touch trim, which is not separately serviceable.
  3. 3
Remove cabin air filter access cover (recommended)
While the lower dash is open, remove the cabin air filter access cover and withdraw both filters. This both improves access to the blower housing and lets you replace the filters per Tesla's 2-year (3-year HEPA) interval. Note filter orientation arrows before removal.
  4. 4
    Locate the blower motor
The blower motor is mounted to the underside of the HVAC housing on the passenger side, above the footwell. It is a cylindrical squirrel-cage assembly with a single electrical connector and is retained to the housing by screws or a quarter-turn locking ring (verify on your specific assembly before forcing).
  5. 5
    Disconnect blower electrical connector
Press the connector lock tab and pull the harness connector straight off the blower motor. Inspect the connector terminals for heat discoloration — a melted connector indicates a high-current fault and the harness pigtail must also be repaired, not just the motor.
If the connector or wires show melt damage, STOP and address the wiring side. Installing a new motor into a damaged connector will destroy the new motor.
  6. 6
Remove blower motor from HVAC housing
Remove the blower retaining screws (or rotate the locking ring counterclockwise on quarter-turn designs) and lower the blower motor straight down out of the housing. Catch any debris that falls from the housing; the squirrel cage often contains leaves and filter fibers.

  7. 7
    Inspect HVAC housing and resistor/controller
With the blower out, inspect the evaporator face and housing interior for debris, mold, or water ingress. If the blower speed controller (resistor module) is co-located and accessible, inspect its connector for heat damage. Replace the controller if its connector shows discoloration.
ℹ️Do not spray cleaners into the evaporator with the LV system disconnected and ECU offline — fluids can pool and trip moisture sensors on reconnect.

  8. 8
    Compare old and new blower
Place the old and new blower motors side-by-side. Confirm fan rotation direction, mounting flange orientation, connector keying, and overall length match. The Model S refresh/Plaid blower is not interchangeable with legacy Model S (pre-refresh) units.
  9. 9
    Install new blower motor
Lift the new blower motor into the housing, align the locating tab/keyway, and start all retaining screws by hand to avoid cross-threading the plastic housing. Tighten retaining screws evenly in a cross pattern.
The blower mounts to a plastic housing — overtorque will strip the bosses and cause an air leak / whistle. Use a calibrated torque wrench, not feel.

  10. 10
    Reconnect blower electrical connector
Push the harness connector fully onto the blower until the locking tab clicks. Verify positive engagement by gently tugging the connector body (not the wires).

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall cabin air filters in the correct airflow orientation, then reinstall the filter access cover and torque its screws to spec.
  2. Reconnect any trim-mounted connectors (courtesy lamp, etc.) to the lower dash close-out panel.
  3. Seat the lower dash panel clips evenly and verify all edges are flush — uneven gaps indicate a missed clip.
  4. Return passenger seat to its original position.
  5. Reconnect the LV battery negative terminal and torque to specification. Clean contact surfaces before reconnecting.
  6. Close the frunk (or rear seat access, depending on LV battery location) and confirm it latches normally.

Verification

  • Power the vehicle on by sitting in the driver's seat with the key fob present. Allow the MCU to fully boot — first boot after LV disconnect can take 1-2 minutes and may show calibration messages.
  • On the touchscreen, open Climate controls. Cycle fan speed from 1 through max — verify smooth ramp with no clicking, ticking, or buzzing from the passenger footwell area.
  • Switch between Auto, defrost, and recirculation modes — the blower should respond without hesitation and there should be no air leak whistle from the housing.
  • Check for HVAC-related alerts on the touchscreen Service tab. None should be present.
  • Test drive briefly and confirm no rattle from the passenger footwell over bumps.
  • If cabin air filters were replaced during this job, log the date/mileage — next replacement is 2 years (or 3 years if HEPA / Bioweapon Defense equipped).
  • Recommend the owner verify brake fluid age (Tesla recommends every 2 years) and tire rotation interval (~6,250 mi) at next service, since the vehicle is already in the shop.
