Replacement of an interior door handle (cabin-side pull/release trim) on a 2024 Tesla Model S Plaid. This requires removing the door card to access the handle assembly behind the trim panel.

Warnings

⚠️Model S Plaid door cards house tweeter/mid speakers and the window switch harness with capacitive controls. Disconnecting the 12V battery before working inside the door is mandatory to prevent airbag/sensor faults and shorting.
The Model S refresh uses electronic door release buttons with a mechanical backup cable. Do not pull the mechanical release cable hard during removal — it can detach from the latch and require door-skin removal to re-seat.
Aluminum body and painted door frame — do not pry against painted surfaces with metal tools. Use plastic trim tools only.
ℹ️After 12V reconnect, the window auto-up/down feature will need to be re-initialized on the affected door.

Tools required

Plastic trim removal tool set (non-marring)Essential
Torx bit set (T20-T30)Essential
1/4" drive torque wrench (2-25 Nm range)Essential
Phillips and flat-blade screwdriver set
Interior panel clip release toolEssential
Soft microfiber blanket or fender cover (to protect door sill)

Parts

  • Interior door handle assembly (Model S Plaid, side-specific) × 1 — OEM Tesla Model S 2021+ refresh interior handle — verify left vs right and trim color/material before ordering
  • Door panel trim clips (replacement set) × 1 — Tesla Model S door card retainer clips — replace any broken on removal

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery located in the front trunk under the nose cowl panel. If this Plaid is equipped with the 16V lithium auxiliary under the rear seat, disconnect that instead — verify by VIN/build before service.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Lower the affected door's window approximately 2 inches before disconnecting 12V to ease door card removal (optional but helpful).
  7. Confirm the door can be opened from the outside before disabling 12V power — once power is off, the electronic interior release is inoperative; the mechanical backup cable must be used.
  8. Place a soft cover over the door sill and seat to protect the aluminum trim and leather/textile.
  9. Identify the correct replacement handle (driver vs passenger, front vs rear, and interior trim color/material) before disassembly.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Release door card lower edge
Using a non-marring plastic trim tool, gently work along the lower and forward edges of the door panel to release the retaining clips. Work slowly — the Model S refresh door card uses a combination of push-in clips and upper hook retention.
Replace any clips that break or distort during removal. Reusing damaged clips will cause door panel rattles.
  2. 2
Lift door card off upper rail
Once the perimeter clips are released, lift the door card straight up to disengage it from the upper window-sill hook. Tilt the top of the panel away from the door frame just enough to access the rear of the panel — do not yank.
  3. 3
Disconnect electrical connectors and mechanical release cable
Disconnect the wiring harnesses for the window switch pack, capacitive door-release button, ambient lighting, tweeter, and any other connectors present. Carefully unclip the mechanical backup release cable from the handle bezel by sliding the cable end out of its retainer — do not pull on the cable itself.
If the mechanical release cable detaches from the latch end, the door must be opened from outside and the latch accessed through the door's interior service openings to re-seat it.
  4. 4
Set door card on protected surface
Place the removed door panel face-down on a clean, padded surface to access the rear of the interior handle assembly.
  5. 5
Remove interior handle assembly from door card
Locate the fasteners securing the interior handle/bezel to the rear of the door panel. Remove the handle screws and any retention clips. Separate the handle assembly from the panel, noting the orientation of the mechanical release cable guide.

  6. 6
Transfer fittings to new handle (if applicable)
If the new handle does not include the cable guide bracket, capacitive button pad, or trim ring, transfer those components from the original handle. Inspect each for damage and replace as needed per OEM specification.
  7. 7
Install new interior handle to door panel
Position the new handle assembly into the door card. Install the handle screws hand-tight first to allow alignment, then torque to specification. Verify the bezel sits flush with the door panel surface with no gaps.

  8. 8
    Reconnect mechanical release cable
Reseat the mechanical backup release cable into its retainer on the new handle. Verify the cable end is fully captured and routed without kinks. Test cable travel by gently actuating the mechanical release lever — it should move freely with a positive return.
Improper cable routing can prevent the door from opening manually in an emergency.

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect all electrical connectors to the door card: window switch pack, capacitive release button, tweeter, ambient lighting, and any others. Ensure each connector clicks fully home.
  2. Inspect all door panel clips; replace any broken or deformed clips before reinstalling the panel.
  3. Align the door card's upper hook over the window sill rail first, then press the panel firmly along the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Listen for each clip to seat.
  4. Verify there are no gaps between the door card and the door frame, and that the panel sits flush at the armrest, speaker grille, and lower edge.
  5. Reconnect the 12V (or 16V) low-voltage battery. Torque the battery terminal to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.
  6. Close the frunk and reinstall the nose cowl panel.

Verification

  • With 12V reconnected and the vehicle awake, press the interior electronic release button — the door should unlatch and present (push open slightly) as designed on the Plaid refresh.
  • Pull the mechanical backup release lever — the door should also unlatch via the cable. This MUST be tested; in an emergency or power loss this is the only way out.
  • Cycle the window fully down and fully up using the new switch interface; if window auto-up/auto-one-touch is inoperative, perform the window initialization procedure (hold switch up for ~3 seconds at full closed, then hold down for ~3 seconds at full open).
  • Verify capacitive door release button responds correctly and that ambient lighting on the door card functions.
  • Close the door and confirm there are no rattles, the door card is flush, and the door seals properly with no wind noise on a short test drive.
  • Check the touchscreen for any door, window, or body control faults. Clear any transient codes that resulted from the 12V disconnect.
  • Note: This job does not affect the Tesla service intervals (brake fluid every 2 years, cabin air filter every 3 years on HEPA-equipped Model S, coolant inspection at 4 yr / 50k mi). However, while the door card is off, it is a good time to inspect the cabin air filter access and door drain weep holes.
