Replace an exterior door handle on a 2024 Model X Plaid. The Model X uses motorized presenting handles on the front doors and a fixed/touch-style handle assembly on the rear (falcon) doors — both require interior door card removal to access the handle assembly.
Warnings
⚠️Falcon-wing rear doors contain pinch sensors, ultrasonic sensors, and powered actuators. Disable the door (via touchscreen Service Mode option) and disconnect the 12V before working on a rear door — an unexpected door cycle can cause severe crush injury.
⚠The front presenting handle contains a small motor and electronic position sensor. Do not pull on the handle to test it before the 12V is reconnected and the door is fully reassembled — forcing the mechanism can strip internal gears.
⚠Model X body panels are aluminum. Never strike with a hammer or pry against painted surfaces without protective tape.
ℹ️After 12V reconnection, the door window auto-index calibration and falcon door height memory may need to relearn. Cycle the door and window fully to allow the controller to re-index.

Parts
- Exterior door handle assembly (color-matched to vehicle) × 1 — Tesla Model X 2024 exterior handle assembly — match to door position (FL/FR/RL/RR) and paint code
- Replacement plastic clips/fasteners for door card (if damaged on removal) × 1 — OEM door panel retainer clips
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery — located in the frunk on Model X. Open frunk, remove the front trim/cowl cover as required, then disconnect the negative terminal first.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- If working on a falcon (rear) door: before disconnecting 12V, use the touchscreen to put the door in service/disabled mode if available, and manually move the door to a comfortable working height. Support the door with a helper or a padded prop once 12V is removed — power assist will be inactive.
- Lower the affected door's window fully (front door) before disconnecting 12V, to provide access through the window slot if needed.
- Apply painter's tape around the perimeter of the exterior handle and along adjacent painted edges to protect paint during removal.
Procedure
- 1Confirm 12V is disconnected and door is safe to serviceVerify the 12V negative terminal is disconnected and isolated. For falcon doors, confirm the door cannot self-actuate. Do not proceed if any indicator lights or interior screens remain active.⚠️Falcon doors can move under power even briefly after 12V removal if a residual capacitor is present in the door module. Keep hands clear of pinch points.
- 2Remove the interior door trim panelCarefully pry off the interior trim caps to expose the hidden fasteners on the door card. Remove the visible Torx/Phillips screws behind the caps and along the lower edge. Using a plastic trim tool, release the perimeter clips starting from the bottom rear corner and working around. Lift the panel up and off the window belt, then disconnect the wiring harness connectors (window switch, speaker, ambient lighting, tweeter) before fully removing.⚠Door card clips are brittle in cold weather — warm the vehicle interior before removal to reduce breakage.
- 3Peel back the moisture barrier (vapor sheet)Carefully peel the butyl-sealed plastic moisture barrier away from the door shell only as far as needed to access the handle assembly area. Do not tear the sheet — it must be reinstalled to prevent water intrusion into the door electronics.ℹ️If the butyl sealant is degraded, plan to apply fresh butyl rope on reassembly to maintain the watertight seal.
- 4Disconnect the handle electrical connectorThrough the access opening in the door shell, locate the wiring harness leading to the exterior handle assembly. Release the connector lock and disconnect it. On front doors this includes the presenter motor and capacitive touch/lock sensor leads.
- 5Disconnect the latch/lock linkage from the handle (if equipped)If the handle assembly uses a mechanical link rod or cable to the door latch, release the rod clip and detach the linkage from the handle bellcrank. Note routing for reassembly.Torque specLock Rod Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 6Remove handle mounting fasteners through access holeReach through the door access opening and locate the handle assembly mounting bolts that secure it to the inside of the outer door skin. Support the handle from outside the vehicle to prevent it from dropping and scratching the paint. Loosen and remove the mounting bolts.Torque specHandle Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 7Remove the handle bracket (if separate)If the handle uses an internal carrier bracket bolted to the door shell, remove the bracket bolts and withdraw the bracket through the access opening.Torque specBracket Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 8Withdraw the exterior handle from the doorFrom outside the vehicle, gently slide and angle the handle assembly out of the door skin opening. Take care not to drag the handle across the painted surface — the taped perimeter should protect the paint, but lift the handle clear rather than sliding it.⚠Aluminum body — do not pry against the door skin with metal tools.
- 9Transfer any reusable components to the new handleIf the replacement handle does not include the gasket, sensor, or trim escutcheon, transfer those parts from the old handle. Inspect any sensor or capacitive touch element for damage and replace if cracked.Torque specSensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 10Install the new exterior handle assemblyPosition the new handle into the door skin opening from outside, ensuring the gasket seats evenly around the perimeter. From inside the door, install the carrier bracket (if applicable) and the handle mounting bolts finger-tight first, then torque to specification.Torque specBracket Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)Handle Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect linkage and electrical connectorReattach the lock/latch link rod and secure with the clip. Reconnect the wiring harness connector to the new handle, ensuring the connector lock fully engages. Verify any sensor mounting fasteners are torqued.Torque specLock Rod Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)Sensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Reseat the moisture barrier against the door shell, pressing firmly into the butyl sealant. Apply fresh butyl rope to any areas where the original seal is compromised.
- Reconnect all door card harness connectors (window switch, speaker, ambient lighting, courtesy lamp).
- Align the door card to the window belt and clip locations, then press firmly around the perimeter to seat all clips. Reinstall perimeter screws and torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual. Reinstall trim caps.
- Reinstall any cover screws removed during disassembly and torque to specification.
- Reconnect the 12V negative terminal in the frunk and reinstall the frunk trim cover.
- Allow the vehicle to fully wake (touchscreen boot complete) before testing door functions.
Verification
- With the key fob present, approach the vehicle and confirm the front presenting handle extends automatically (front doors) or that the touch-to-open sensor unlocks the door (if equipped).
- Press the handle and verify the door unlatches and opens smoothly. Cycle lock/unlock from the fob and from the touchscreen — confirm the handle responds correctly.
- For falcon (rear) doors: open and close the door fully via the interior button, exterior touch, and touchscreen. Verify obstacle/pinch sensors still function by waving a hand near the door edge during closure (door should reverse).
- Check for any door-related alerts on the touchscreen (e.g. "Door open" warnings, handle fault).
- Spray-test the door area with water (low pressure) and inspect interior door card lower edge for leaks — confirms moisture barrier was reinstalled correctly.
- Note: while servicing this door, confirm the cabin air filter service interval (every 2 years on Model X, every 3 years if HEPA/Bioweapon Defense equipped) and brake fluid interval (every 2 years) are not overdue — these are commonly missed under Tesla's 'no scheduled maintenance' marketing.
